powerful, and fit you are. -

that sends out messages.* -

are fantastically powerful men.* -

different types of power. -

"a very animal power. "* -

4:23 - 4:28And he walks by having his shoulders
boucing back and forth. -

He's very active. -
4:32 - 4:34I would almost call it
a kind of sexy power. -
4:34 - 4:40George Bush, on the other hand,
has a more traditional American power. -
4:40 - 4:42There's very little movement
above the shoulders. -
4:42 - 4:45He's trying to look
like he's controled. -
4:45 - 4:47There's no extra wasted energy.

4:49 - 4:53*Perceiving the body language message
of these two powerful presidents* -
4:53 - 4:54*is straightforward.*

4:54 - 4:59*But body language is often complex
and easily misunderstood.* -

it has a significant cultural impact. -

I'll help you through the door. " -
6:25 - 6:26"I'll show you the way. "

6:29 - 6:34*Throw in the fear and tension present
in most Middle East negociations* -
6:34 - 6:39*and suddely, the desire of both Arafat
and Barak not to go through that door* -

starts to make sense.* -

in an extreme way, -
6:46 - 6:49of how the last man through the door
is the winner. -
6:49 - 6:53*Barak reaches for Yasser Arafat.*

and starts waggling his finger at Barak* -

to move around to actually be behind.* -

7:12 - 7:16You've got fear and power struggle

body language movements. -
7:23 - 7:26*Arafat and Barak are not the only ones*

7:26 - 7:30*to appreciate the significance
of "the last man through the door move. "* -

subtle cues reveal who's talked of.* -

plays host to President Bush.* -

we're looking at, 10 Downing Street,* -
7:46 - 7:49*and one would expect Tony Blair
to be very territorial.* -

he should be host. -
7:53 - 7:57He should be in charge, and the boss
in terms of who goes through the door. -
7:58 - 8:00*And yet,
Tony Blair, the Prime Minister,* -
8:00 - 8:03*accepts that the seniority
and place here is the President's.* -
8:03 - 8:06*So President Bush says:
"Photos are over".* -
8:06 - 8:08*Gives him a little nod.*

of the choreography.* -
8:13 - 8:16He goes through the door last,
used his left hand -

not shoving Blair through the door.* -

meaning Bush is in charge. -

the President being in charge* -
8:26 - 8:28*and wanting to be clear
that he's in charge,* -
8:28 - 8:33not only displays the ownership symbol
of putting his hand on Blair's back -
8:33 - 8:36but then he displays
a further bit of dominance. -
8:36 - 8:38*He gives him three little taps,*

8:38 - 8:41just to let him know
that actually he's a good little boy. -
8:41 - 8:43And that George W. Bush is boss.

is one way to demonstrate power.* -
8:48 - 8:51*Getting the upper hand is another.*

world leaders get together,* -

to demonstrate dominance.* -

of grabbing somebody by the elbow -

he immediately crowds Putin.* -
11:02 - 11:05Instead of just grabbing
and letting Putin grab his arm, -
11:05 - 11:09*George Bush puts his shoulder
against Putin's so that Putin's left arm* -
11:09 - 11:13*is no way in a position
to grab hold of Bush's right arm.* -
11:13 - 11:17Then as soon as Bush turns out,
he immediately goes for a little tap. -
11:17 - 11:20*And stir on Putin's back
to actually give him a push.* -
11:21 - 11:24*And Putin,
making sure not to be outdone,* -
11:24 - 11:27*puts his right arm up
and give Bush a little tap as well.* -
11:28 - 11:30*We'll call that a draw.*

can speak volumes.* -

Churchill's body language* -

Britain's diminishing status.* -
12:47 - 12:51It doesn't look as though Churchill
is a full and equal participant. -
12:51 - 12:56Not only is his posture hunched up,
but Roosevelt barely ever talks to him. -
12:56 - 12:59*And Stalin doesn't really meet him,
except to shake his hand.* -
12:59 - 13:02Churchill has both elbows out.

13:03 - 13:07But the top is that
he's holding his hat in his lap -
13:08 - 13:10*to cover up his private parts.*

13:10 - 13:13Which feel kind of honorable
in this situation. -
13:13 - 13:18You can see how each of these men
are master in their own country. -
13:18 - 13:20*How they interact with one another,*
-
13:20 - 13:24*what their relationship is
in the world stage.* -
13:27 - 13:30Ladies and gentlemen,
the President of the United States. -
13:31 - 13:35*A politician's body language
can easily give them away.* -
13:35 - 13:37*Especially when he's under pressure.*

to have this kind of investment* -

was 800,000 dollars as President?* -
14:50 - 14:53*I should point out I wasnt a pauper
when I became president.* -
14:53 - 14:55*I wasnt very rich as Presidents goal.*

as he is trying to defend himself -
14:59 - 15:02against the sensory the press called
that he's acting like a pack of wolves. -
15:02 - 15:05He is holding himself away
from that podium -
15:05 - 15:07like he is going
to be attacked from it. -
15:08 - 15:10*In this case,*

15:10 - 15:14*Nixon is trying to protect himself
from some searching questions.* -
15:14 - 15:15*That I welcome
this kind of examination.* -
15:15 - 15:19Because people have got to know
if their presidents a crook. -
15:19 - 15:23I'm not a crook.
I've earned everything Ive got. -
15:25 - 15:29He says "I am not a crook,"
and immediately goes into retreat. -
15:29 - 15:30His body backs away.

15:30 - 15:33*Really clear tell.*

15:33 - 15:36*When somebody makes a statement,*

15:36 - 15:39a definitive statement,
and immediately retreats, -
15:39 - 15:41we know they don't think
they've told the truth, -
15:41 - 15:45they know they didn't tell the truth,
They were escaping that lie. -
15:46 - 15:49*Nixon also suddenly crosses his arms.*

15:49 - 15:54He goes immediately from that,
quick arm cross to protect himself. -
15:54 - 15:56Oh, my God!

15:56 - 15:58I just said something!

15:58 - 16:01*And also did the best of my ability.*

16:01 - 16:03*Right there, shaking his head no.*

16:03 - 16:06*Time and again,
throughout this exchange,* -

tellingly defensive body language.* -
16:10 - 16:12Stop. Look at this.

to get this norm,* -

someone's body language with accuracy.* -

what's normal for that person,* -

in that situation?" -

at a suspect in a crime, -

"What would be a normal response -
17:25 - 17:27for a husband whose wife is missing?

17:27 - 17:32"What would be a normal response
for parents if their children are missing?" -
17:32 - 17:34And how far from normal
is this behaviour? -
17:35 - 17:38*When someone's body language
departs from the norm,* -
17:38 - 17:41*it can often be a sign
that all is not well.* -
17:48 - 17:52*Britney Spears makes a perfect
body language case study* -
17:52 - 17:55*because of her love-hate relationship
with living in the public eye.* -

some people arrive fashionably late,* -

fashionably punished. -

which is alarm bell number one.* -

based on what the officer says. -
45:21 - 45:22Hes got a plan in his mind.

which tells hes nervous.* -

puts his hands into his pockets.* -
45:32 - 45:37That tells you that he is either
nervous about what's about to happen, -
45:37 - 45:40hes gonna get aggressive,
or may have something in his pockets. -
45:40 - 45:42*Keep your hands out of your pockets.*

45:44 - 45:48*the driver is out of his car,
he's put his hands in his pockets,* -
45:48 - 45:51*both potentially threatening
body language indicators.* -

of the last indicator you see -

and thats exactly what he does. -

by pulling down like this. -

and clears the top of the shirt. -

48:02 - 48:04The first thing Im gonna got
is my thumb and a pull-up. -

this weapon before I pull it out. -

for those that can see them.* -

there are situations when body language* -

in just a fraction of a second.* -

was making undercover of vice. -

who were actually elected for office.* -

is an important factor in our choice.* -
60:53 - 60:57*We're hardwired to understand
3,000 different facial expressions.* -
60:58 - 61:02*But there's even more information
to be gleaned from the human face.* -

what's known as "a microexpression".* -
61:13 - 61:16Microexpressions are the expressions

61:23 - 61:27and then your face would suddenly
form itself into a very sad face. -

62:51 - 62:54at being attacked in this way.

62:58 - 63:01*The microexpression can be isolated.*
-
63:01 - 63:04*As Schwarzenegger opens his mouth,*

63:04 - 63:08*his nose muscles flare upwards
into a momentary snarl.* -
63:08 - 63:12*But it seems the voters
didn't spot this body language giveaway.* -

he was elected Governor of California.* -

almost into the corner.* -
65:22 - 65:24Eyebrows are up
and coming together in the corner, -
65:24 - 65:26almost like a fear.

65:26 - 65:28*Surprise and fear almost together.*

65:29 - 65:32Ideally, if she's telling the truth,
we'd like to see the brows come down. -
65:32 - 65:34Because she should be angry.

65:34 - 65:36*You're being falsely accused
of something you didn't do,* -
65:36 - 65:38the brows should come down.

65:38 - 65:42I have truthfully answered
every question asked of me under oath. -
65:42 - 65:44There shouldn't be fear and surprise.

65:44 - 65:47It might leak out maybe a little bit.
But it's non-stop here. -
65:47 - 65:52The fear and surprise is the dominant
emotion leaking out subconsciously. -
65:54 - 65:57*Fear and surprise
weren't the only emotions* -
65:57 - 65:59*leaking from Jones' face.*

65:59 - 66:01If the truth is told,

66:01 - 66:04then my name will be cleared
and I can move on with my life. -
66:05 - 66:09"The truth can be told,
then I can move on with my life. " -
66:09 - 66:13Then immediately, she creates
this unbelievably sad expression. -
66:13 - 66:17She looks down,
she's got a long face. -
66:23 - 66:27*Marion Jones' brief flash of sadness
is a classic example* -
66:27 - 66:29*of what experts call "a hotspot".*

66:30 - 66:32*These are facial expressions*
-
66:32 - 66:35*that seem to be at odds
with what someone is saying.* -
66:35 - 66:38*Or inconsistent
with how they would be expected* -
66:38 - 66:40*to behave in a given situation.*

66:40 - 66:44That's a point where you have
to look for more information. -
66:44 - 66:46It could mean a lie
but also many different things. -
66:46 - 66:49Do we know that it's guilty
and not something else? -
66:49 - 66:52At the time,
it would've been very hard to tell. -
66:54 - 66:57*For Newberry,
the biggest hotspot of all* -
66:57 - 67:01*is the absence of
one specific emotion on Jones' face.* -
67:01 - 67:03It's not what you're seeing,
it's what you're not seeing. -
67:03 - 67:07You're not seeing an angered response.

67:07 - 67:12I'm not going to engage
in USADA's secret kangaroo court. -
67:12 - 67:17*Jones' words were defiant.
Her face certainly wasn't.* -
67:17 - 67:20*Her body language just didn't go
with what she was saying.* -
67:24 - 67:26*Three years later,
all that had changed.* -
67:28 - 67:32*Here she emerges from court
to face the media again.* -
67:32 - 67:36*Having been found guilty
of lying under oath to federal agents.* -
67:37 - 67:40It is with a great amound of shame
-
67:41 - 67:43that I stand before you,

67:43 - 67:46and tell you
that I have betrayed your trust. -
67:47 - 67:49It moves me now to even talk about it.

67:49 - 67:52That's what happens
when people are being authentic. -
67:52 - 67:57You are taken to thei level
of pain, anger, fear. -
67:59 - 68:01When she's finally coming clean,

68:01 - 68:05you see a more relaxed Marion Jones.

for my actions. -

68:10 - 68:15*can be applied to anonymous people
catapulted into the media spotlight.* -
68:15 - 68:20I just can't stress it enough
that we just got to get them home. -
68:20 - 68:22That's just where they belong,
with their mamma and daddy. -
68:23 - 68:28*Susan Smith's face was all over
national television in late 1994* -
68:29 - 68:32*after she claimed her two young sons
had been abducted.* -
68:39 - 68:43*JJ Newberry saw Smith's
televised appeal for their safe return.* -

of Smith's guilt?* -

is that there was no real tears.* -
69:07 - 69:09It was a fake cry.

69:17 - 69:21This is all connected:
eyes, ears, nose and throat. -
69:22 - 69:27So when you start crying,
the physiology takes over: -
69:27 - 69:30your sinuses swell up,
your nose starts running -
69:30 - 69:32you start swallowing
and the tears come out. -
69:33 - 69:34You don't see any of that.

she's closing her eyes. -

about what she's gonna say. -

70:00 - 70:02It's simply a hotspot,

that should tell the interviewer: -

this aspect of what she's saying". -

that passes by -

about these boys. -

This is an emotional person. -

Body language is a form of non-verbal communication, which consists of body posture, gestures, facial expressions, and eye movements. Humans send and interpret such signals almost entirely subconsciously.
John Borg attests that human communication consists of 93 percent body language and paralinguistic cues, while only 7% of communication consists of words themselves;[1] however, Albert Mehrabian, the researcher whose 1960s work is the source of these statistics, has stated that this is a misunderstanding of the findings[2] (see Misinterpretation of Mehrabian's rule). Others assert that "Research has suggested that between 60 and 70 percent of all meaning is derived from nonverbal behavior."[3]
Body language may provide clues as to the attitude or state of mind of a person. For example, it may indicate aggression, attentiveness, boredom, relaxed state, pleasure, amusement, and intoxication, among many other cues.
