How fake news does real harm

  • Not Synced
I want to tell you a story
  • Not Synced
    about a girl,
  • Not Synced
but I can't tell you her real name.
  • Not Synced
So let's just call her Hadiza.
  • Not Synced
    Hadiza is 20.
  • Not Synced
She's shy, but she has a beautiful smile
  • Not Synced
    that lights up her face,
  • Not Synced
    but she's in constant pain
  • Not Synced
and she will likely be on medication
for the rest of her life.
  • Not Synced
Do you want to know why?
  • Not Synced
    Hadiza is a Chibok girl,
  • Not Synced
    and on April 14, 2014,
    she was kidnapped
  • Not Synced
    by Boko Haram terrorists.
  • Not Synced
    She managed to escape, though,
  • Not Synced
    by jumping off the truck
    that was carrying the girls,
  • Not Synced
    but when she landed,
    she broke both her legs
  • Not Synced
and she had to crawl on her tummy
    to hide in the bushes.
  • Not Synced
She told me she was terrified
that Boko Haram would come back for her.
  • Not Synced
She was one of 57 girls who would escape
by jumping off trucks that day.
  • Not Synced
This story quite rightly caused ripples
  • Not Synced
    around the world.
  • Not Synced
    People like Michelle Obama,
    Malala, and others
  • Not Synced
    lent their voices in protest,
  • Not Synced
and at about the same time,
I was living in London at the time,
  • Not Synced
I was sent from London to Abuja
to cover the World Economic Forum
  • Not Synced
    that Nigeria was hosting
    for the first time.
  • Not Synced
But when we arrived, it was clear
that there was only one story in town.
  • Not Synced
We put the government under pressure.
  • Not Synced
    We asked tough questions
    about what they were doing
  • Not Synced
    to bring these girls back.
  • Not Synced
    Understandably,
  • Not Synced
    they weren't too happy
    with our line of questioning,
  • Not Synced
and let's just say we received
our fair share of "alternative facts."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Influential Nigerians
were telling us at the time
  • Not Synced
    that we were naïve,
  • Not Synced
    we didn't understand
    the political situation in Nigeria.
  • Not Synced
    But they also told us
  • Not Synced
that the story of the Chibok girls
  • Not Synced
    was a hoax.
  • Not Synced
Sadly, this hoax narrative has persisted
  • Not Synced
    and there are still people
    in NIgeria today
  • Not Synced
who believe that the Chibok girls
    were never kidnapped.
  • Not Synced
Yet I was talking to people like these,
  • Not Synced
    devastated parents
  • Not Synced
who told us that on the day
that Boko Haram kidnapped their daughters
  • Not Synced
they ran into the Sambisa Forest
after the trucks carrying their daughters.
  • Not Synced
    They were armed with machetes,
but they were forced to turn back
  • Not Synced
    because Boko Haram had guns.
  • Not Synced
    For two years, inevitably,
    the news agenda moved on,
  • Not Synced
    and for two years
  • Not Synced
    we didn't hear much
    about the Chibok girls.
  • Not Synced
    Everyone presumed they were dead,
  • Not Synced
    but in April last year,
  • Not Synced
I was able to obtain this video.
  • Not Synced
This is a still from the video
  • Not Synced
that Boko Haram filmed as a proof of life,
  • Not Synced
    and through a source
    I obtained this video.
  • Not Synced
But before I could publish it, I had to
travel to the northeast of Nigeria
  • Not Synced
to talk to the parents, to verify it.
  • Not Synced
    I didn't have to wait
    too long for confirmation.
  • Not Synced
    One of the mothers,
when she watched the video, told me
  • Not Synced
that if she could have reached
    into the laptop
  • Not Synced
and pulled our her child from the laptop,
    she would have done so.
  • Not Synced
For those of you who are parents
    like myself in the audience,
  • Not Synced
you can only imagine the anguish
  • Not Synced
    that that mother felt.
  • Not Synced
This video would go on to kickstart
    negotiation talks with Boko Haram,
  • Not Synced
and a Nigerian senator told me
    that because of this video
  • Not Synced
    they entered into those talks
  • Not Synced
    because they had long presumed
that the Chibok girls were dead.
  • Not Synced
    Twenty-one girls were freed
    in October last year.
  • Not Synced
    Sadly, nearly 200 of them
    still remain missing.
  • Not Synced
I must confess that I have not been
    a dispassionate observer
  • Not Synced
    covering this story.
  • Not Synced
I am furious when I think
    about the wasted opportunities
  • Not Synced
    to rescue these girls.
  • Not Synced
I am furious when I think about
what the parents have told me,
  • Not Synced
    that if these were daughters
of the rich and the powerful,
  • Not Synced
they would have been found much earlier.
  • Not Synced
    And I am furious
  • Not Synced
    that the hoax narrative
  • Not Synced
I firmly believe caused a delay
  • Not Synced
    was part of the reason
for the delay in their return.
  • Not Synced
    This illustrates to me
the deadly danger of fake news.
  • Not Synced
So what can we do about it?
  • Not Synced
There are some very smart people,
  • Not Synced
smart engineers at Google and Facebook,
  • Not Synced
who are trying to use technology
to stop the spread of fake news.
  • Not Synced
But beyond that, I think everybody here,
  • Not Synced
you and I, we have a role to play in that.
  • Not Synced
We are the ones who share the content.
  • Not Synced
We are the ones who share
    the stories online.
  • Not Synced
In this day and age, we're all publishers,
  • Not Synced
    and we have responsibility.
  • Not Synced
In my job as a journalist,
  • Not Synced
    I check, I verify.
  • Not Synced
I trust my gut, but I ask tough questions.
  • Not Synced
Why is this person telling me this story?
  • Not Synced
What do they have to gain
  • Not Synced
    by sharing this information?
  • Not Synced
Do they have a hidden agenda?
  • Not Synced
I really believe that we must all
    start to ask tougher questions
  • Not Synced
of information that we discover online.
  • Not Synced
Research shows that some of us
    don't even read beyond headlines
  • Not Synced
    before we share stories.
  • Not Synced
    Who here has done that?
  • Not Synced
    I know I have.
  • Not Synced
    But what if
  • Not Synced
    we stopped taking information
that we discover at face value?
  • Not Synced
What if we stop to think
    about the consequence
  • Not Synced
of the information that we pass on
  • Not Synced
    and its potential to incite
    violence or hatred?
  • Not Synced
What if we stop to think
    about the real-life consequences
  • Not Synced
of the information that we share?
  • Not Synced
Thank you very much for listening.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
