What to do if You Baby is Choking - First Aid Training - St John Ambulance
-
0:07 - 0:13As you start weaning your baby, small items of food may get lodged in their throat and they may choke.
-
0:13 - 0:16They can also choke on small toys or household items.
-
0:16 - 0:20If a baby under one year old is choking, you'll notice that they will be unable to cry, cough
-
0:20 - 0:22or breathe.
-
0:23 - 0:26What we're going to do now is administer some back blows.
-
0:26 - 0:30So first of all you need to lay your baby face down along your thigh,
-
0:30 - 0:32making sure you support their head and their neck.
-
0:32 - 0:36Next we're going to administer those directly between the shoulder blades,
-
0:36 - 0:38using the heel of your hand.
-
0:38 - 0:44Give up to five sharp back blows, making sure after each one checking that whatever it is hasn't come out.
-
0:44 - 0:48If the back blows don't work, we now need to move on to giving some chest thrusts.
-
0:48 - 0:51So we need to turn them over, so they're lying face up.
-
0:51 - 0:55Again, making sure that their head and their neck are supported.
-
0:55 - 1:01Put two fingers in line with the armpit in the centre of the chest. Pushing down sharply, administer
-
1:01 - 1:02up to five chest thrusts.
-
1:07 - 1:12If this doesn't work, call 999 or 112 for emergency help.
-
1:12 - 1:16Repeat five back blows and five chest thrusts until help arrives.
-
1:17 - 1:22If they become unresponsive, you will need to start CPR.
-
1:23 - 1:29So remember, if your baby is choking, check the mouth, slap it out, squeeze it out.
-
1:29 - 1:31And that's how we treat a choking baby.
-
1:31 - 1:35Thanks for watching. Help support St John Ambulance, donate today.
