24 hours on Earth -- in one image
-
0:00 - 0:03Nature reveals itself to us
in unique ways, -
0:04 - 0:07if we stop and look at the world
through a window of time. -
0:08 - 0:09Over the last decade,
-
0:09 - 0:13I've observed endangered species
and habitats around the world, -
0:13 - 0:17using a photographic technique
that captures the passage of time, -
0:17 - 0:19literally from day to night,
-
0:19 - 0:21all within a single image.
-
0:22 - 0:23It has allowed me to witness
-
0:23 - 0:27the fleeting moments
between wildlife and the natural habitat -
0:27 - 0:30as time changes
over the course of a single day. -
0:31 - 0:34In the Serengeti,
during a five-week drought, -
0:34 - 0:39I discovered a watering hole
and watched, for 26 hours, -
0:39 - 0:41diverse and competitive wildlife
-
0:41 - 0:45calmly share our planet's
most precious resource: -
0:45 - 0:46water.
-
0:47 - 0:52On Lake Bogoria in Kenya, I photographed
the great migration of flamingos. -
0:52 - 0:55This happens normally
during the peak of dry season, -
0:55 - 0:58but climate change has created
evening thunderstorms, -
0:58 - 1:00turning normally dry hills green
-
1:00 - 1:05and creating freshwater streams
in which the flamingos joyously bathe. -
1:07 - 1:10Our planet is changing before our eyes.
-
1:10 - 1:12But to witness that change
-
1:12 - 1:16is also to witness the remarkable
relationships between all of nature, -
1:16 - 1:18to see the infinite beauty of it,
-
1:18 - 1:21to learn how much bigger than us it is
-
1:21 - 1:24and why it is worth fighting for.
-
1:25 - 1:29In 2019, the Greenland ice sheet
was experiencing its largest melt -
1:29 - 1:31in recorded history:
-
1:31 - 1:35200 billion tons of ice
liquified into the ocean. -
1:36 - 1:37When glacial ice melts,
-
1:37 - 1:41caving icebergs release sediments
and particles into the seawater, -
1:41 - 1:44initiating our ocean's food chain.
-
1:44 - 1:46Plankton feed on the sediment,
-
1:46 - 1:47krill eat plankton,
-
1:47 - 1:50and the humpback whales feed on the krill.
-
1:50 - 1:53This photograph is the result
of witnessing with my camera -
1:53 - 1:56a 36-hour feast by humpback whales.
-
1:58 - 2:01We assume that the greatest
threat of glacial melt -
2:01 - 2:03will be sea level rise,
-
2:03 - 2:05which will certainly have
major impacts on coastlines -
2:05 - 2:08and populations around the world.
-
2:08 - 2:09But within this image,
-
2:09 - 2:12we discover that perhaps
the greatest threat from glacial melt -
2:12 - 2:15might be our ocean's ability
to feed itself. -
2:16 - 2:17Without ice,
-
2:17 - 2:19the ocean food chain may break.
-
2:20 - 2:23Creating this photograph
opened my consciousness. -
2:23 - 2:26I hope through your willingness
to look and see, -
2:26 - 2:28it may open yours.

- 24 hours on Earth -- in one image
- Speaker:
- Stephen Wilkes
- Description:
-
"Nature reveals itself to us in unique ways, if we stop and look at the world through a window of time," says photographer Stephen Wilkes. Using a special photographic technique that reveals how a scene changes from day to night in a single image, Wilkes exposes the Earth's beautiful complexity and the impacts of climate change -- from the disruption of flamingo migrations in Africa to the threat of melting ice -- with unprecedented force.
