0:08 - 0:12[Shahzia Sikander: "The Last Post"]
-
0:13 - 0:17[layered sounds of music samples, static, and distortion]
-
0:32 - 0:39I tend to look into cultural and political boundaries
-
0:40 - 0:44and explore, you know, ideas in those boundaries.
-
0:44 - 0:47Sometimes it's more obvious, sometimes it's less.
-
0:47 - 0:56Sometimes it's more abstract, and sometimes it's far more illustrative of a political idea or thought.
-
0:59 - 1:06"The Last Post" plays on the sort of oscillating colonial trade relations
-
1:06 - 1:13between China and the East India Company at that time, over opium.
-
1:14 - 1:22I started looking at the East India Company and at the company man,
-
1:22 - 1:26became like the protagonist who travels throughout India,
-
1:26 - 1:30and then ventures into China.
-
1:30 - 1:39In this work, it is also referring to the end of the Anglo-Saxon hegemony over China,
-
1:40 - 1:43and there is a moment in the animation
-
1:43 - 1:50where the symbolic figure of the East India Company man sort of explodes.
-
1:51 - 1:53[distorted explosion sound plays]
-
2:03 - 2:09There are moments, I think, in the animation that embody some of these concepts,
-
2:09 - 2:16but it's not necessarily a liner narrative about this whole opium trade.
-
2:24 - 2:28Animations were quite a natural outcome to my process
-
2:28 - 2:33because I work in drawing primarily, and a lot of the drawings
-
2:33 - 2:42play with the idea of narrative, and movement was just a natural outcome.
-
2:42 - 2:49A lot of the murals that I did, a lot of the wall installations, were fairly large, and built in layers,
-
2:49 - 2:55and that also was very similar to how a lot of the animation work was constructed,
-
2:55 - 2:59which was in Photoshop, in layers.
-
3:04 - 3:07[woman singing softly]
-
3:20 - 3:25So I'm interested in taking a form, breaking it apart, and then rebuilding it.
-
3:28 - 3:31It is about transformation for me,
-
3:31 - 3:38whether it is the transformation of a image or a mark or a symbol.
-
3:39 - 3:43Or if it's the transformation of a genre or transformation of a medium.
-
3:44 - 3:53But it is a very core notion that I think stabilizes my practice.

- Description:

Episode #172: Filmed in 2012 at Shahzia Sikander's Manhattan studio, the artist discusses her animated video work "The Last Post" (2010). Sikander also describes how beginning to create animations was a natural evolution in her studio process because she had already been working with narrative and layering in her paintings and large-scale installations.
Shahzia Sikander specializes in Indian and Persian miniature painting, a traditional style that is both highly stylized and disciplined. Her work blends the Eastern focus on precision and methodology with a Western emphasis on creative, subjective expression. Sikander juxtaposes Hindu, Muslim, and Western iconography, entangling histories, meanings, and beliefs.
