3 tips to boost your confidence - TED-Ed
-
0:06 - 0:08When faced with a big challenge
-
0:08 - 0:11where potential failure seems
to lurk at every corner, -
0:11 - 0:14maybe you've heard this advice before:
-
0:14 - 0:16"Be more confident."
-
0:16 - 0:20And most likely, this is what you think
when you hear it: -
0:20 - 0:22"If only it were that simple."
-
0:22 - 0:24But what is confidence?
-
0:24 - 0:28Take the belief that you are valuable,
worthwhile, and capable, -
0:28 - 0:30also known as self-esteem,
-
0:30 - 0:35add in the optimism that comes
when you are certain of your abilities, -
0:35 - 0:37and then empowered by these,
-
0:37 - 0:41act courageously
to face a challenge head-on. -
0:41 - 0:43This is confidence.
-
0:43 - 0:47It turns thoughts into action.
-
0:47 - 0:49So where does confidence even come from?
-
0:49 - 0:53There are several factors
that impact confidence. -
0:53 - 0:55One: what you're born with,
such as your genes, -
0:55 - 1:00which will impact things like the balance
of neurochemicals in your brain. -
1:00 - 1:03Two: how you're treated.
-
1:03 - 1:06This includes the social pressures
of your environment. -
1:06 - 1:10And three: the part you have control over,
-
1:10 - 1:11the choices you make,
-
1:11 - 1:13the risks you take,
-
1:13 - 1:17and how you think about
and respond to challenges and setbacks. -
1:17 - 1:20It isn't possible to completely untangle
these three factors, -
1:20 - 1:24but the personal choices we make
certainly play a major role -
1:24 - 1:26in confidence development.
-
1:26 - 1:30So, by keeping in mind
a few practical tips, -
1:30 - 1:35we do actually have the power to cultivate
our own confidence. -
1:35 - 1:38Tip 1: a quick fix.
-
1:38 - 1:41There are a few tricks that can give you
an immediate confidence boost -
1:41 - 1:43in the short term.
-
1:43 - 1:47Picture your success
when you're beginning a difficult task, -
1:47 - 1:50something as simple as listening to music
with deep bass; -
1:50 - 1:54it can promote feelings of power.
-
1:54 - 1:59You can even strike a powerful pose
or give yourself a pep talk. -
1:59 - 2:04Tip two:
believe in your ability to improve. -
2:04 - 2:06If you're looking for a long-term change,
-
2:06 - 2:10consider the way you think
about your abilities and talents. -
2:10 - 2:12Do you think they are fixed at birth,
-
2:12 - 2:15or that they can be developed,
like a muscle? -
2:15 - 2:18These beliefs matter because
they can influence how you act -
2:18 - 2:21when you're faced with setbacks.
-
2:21 - 2:22If you have a fixed mindset,
-
2:22 - 2:25meaning that you think your talents
are locked in place, -
2:25 - 2:27you might give up,
-
2:27 - 2:30assuming you've discovered
something you're not very good at. -
2:30 - 2:35But if you have a growth mindset
and think your abilities can improve, -
2:35 - 2:38a challenge is an opportunity
to learn and grow. -
2:38 - 2:41Neuroscience supports the growth mindset.
-
2:41 - 2:46The connections in your brain do get
stronger and grow with study and practice. -
2:46 - 2:48It also turns out, on average,
-
2:48 - 2:51people who have a growth mindset
are more successful, -
2:51 - 2:53getting better grades,
-
2:53 - 2:57and doing better
in the face of challenges. -
2:57 - 3:00Tip three: practice failure.
-
3:00 - 3:02Face it, you're going to fail sometimes.
-
3:02 - 3:05Everyone does.
-
3:05 - 3:07J.K. Rowling was rejected by
twelve different publishers -
3:07 - 3:10before one picked up "Harry Potter."
-
3:10 - 3:13The Wright Brothers built on history's
failed attempts at flight, -
3:13 - 3:15including some of their own,
-
3:15 - 3:18before designing a successful airplane.
-
3:18 - 3:22Studies show that those who fail regularly
and keep trying anyway -
3:22 - 3:25are better equipped to respond
to challenges and setbacks -
3:25 - 3:28in a constructive way.
-
3:28 - 3:31They learn how to try
different strategies, -
3:31 - 3:32ask others for advice,
-
3:32 - 3:34and perservere.
-
3:34 - 3:37So, think of a challenge
you want to take on, -
3:37 - 3:40realize it's not going to be easy,
-
3:40 - 3:42accept that you'll make mistakes,
-
3:42 - 3:44and be kind to yourself when you do.
-
3:44 - 3:50Give yourself a pep talk,
stand up, and go for it. -
3:50 - 3:53The excitement you'll feel knowing that
whatever the result, -
3:53 - 3:56you'll have gained greater knowledge
and understanding. -
3:56 - 3:58This is confidence.
