What is the world wide web? - Twila Camp
-
0:07 - 0:09The World Wide Web,
-
0:09 - 0:11where you're likely watching this video,
-
0:11 - 0:13is used by millions of people every day
-
0:13 - 0:14for everything from
-
0:14 - 0:15checking the weather,
-
0:15 - 0:16ordering food,
-
0:16 - 0:17and chatting with friends
-
0:17 - 0:18to raising funds,
-
0:18 - 0:19sharing news,
-
0:19 - 0:21or starting revolutions.
-
0:21 - 0:24We use it from our computers, our phones, even our cars.
-
0:24 - 0:25It's just there,
-
0:25 - 0:27all around us, all the time.
-
0:27 - 0:29But what is it exactly?
-
0:29 - 0:32Well first of all, the World Wide Web is not the Internet,
-
0:32 - 0:35even though the terms are often used interchangeably.
-
0:35 - 0:38The Internet is simply the way computers connect to each other
-
0:38 - 0:39in order to share information.
-
0:39 - 0:41When the Internet first emerged,
-
0:41 - 0:44computers actually made direct calls to each other.
-
0:44 - 0:46Today, networks are all around us,
-
0:46 - 0:49so computers can communicate seamlessly.
-
0:49 - 0:51The communication enabled through the Internet
-
0:51 - 0:52has many uses,
-
0:52 - 0:55such as email, file transfer, and conferencing.
-
0:55 - 0:56But the most common use
-
0:56 - 0:58is accessing the World Wide Web.
-
0:58 - 1:01Think of the Web as a bunch of skyscrapers,
-
1:01 - 1:03each representing a web server,
-
1:03 - 1:06a computer always connected to the Internet,
-
1:06 - 1:08specifically designed to store information and share it.
-
1:08 - 1:10When someone starts a website,
-
1:10 - 1:13they are renting a room in this skyscraper,
-
1:13 - 1:14filling it with information
-
1:14 - 1:16and linking that information together
-
1:16 - 1:19in an organized way for others to access.
-
1:19 - 1:21The people who own these skyscrapers
-
1:21 - 1:22and rent space in them
-
1:22 - 1:23are called web hosts,
-
1:23 - 1:25but anyone can set up a web server
-
1:25 - 1:27with the right equipment a bit of know-how.
-
1:27 - 1:29There's another part to having a website,
-
1:29 - 1:31without which we would be lost in the city
-
1:31 - 1:33with no way of finding what we need.
-
1:33 - 1:35This is the website address,
-
1:35 - 1:37which consists of domain names.
-
1:37 - 1:38Just like with a real life address,
-
1:38 - 1:41a website address lets you get where you want to go.
-
1:41 - 1:43The information stored in the websites
-
1:43 - 1:45is in web languages,
-
1:45 - 1:47such as HTML and JavaScript.
-
1:47 - 1:49When we find the website we're looking for,
-
1:49 - 1:52our web browser is able to take all the code on the site
-
1:52 - 1:55and turn it into words, graphics, and videos.
-
1:55 - 1:58We don't need to know any special computer languages
-
1:58 - 2:01because the web browser creates a graphic interface for us.
-
2:01 - 2:03So, in a lot of ways,
-
2:03 - 2:05the World Wide Web is a big virtual city
-
2:05 - 2:07where we communicate with each other
-
2:07 - 2:08in web languages,
-
2:08 - 2:11with browsers acting as our translators.
-
2:11 - 2:13And just like no one owns a city,
-
2:13 - 2:14no one owns the Web;
-
2:14 - 2:16it belongs to all of us.
-
2:16 - 2:18Anyone can move in and set up shop.
-
2:18 - 2:20We might have to pay an Internet service provider
-
2:20 - 2:21to gain access,
-
2:21 - 2:23a hosting company to rent web space,
-
2:23 - 2:26or a registrar to reserve our web address.
-
2:26 - 2:28Like utility companies in a city,
-
2:28 - 2:30these companies provide crucial services,
-
2:30 - 2:31but in the end,
-
2:31 - 2:33not even they own the Web.
-
2:33 - 2:35But what really makes the Web so special
-
2:35 - 2:37lies in its very name.
-
2:37 - 2:38Prior to the Web,
-
2:38 - 2:40we used to consume most information
-
2:40 - 2:41in a linear fashion.
-
2:41 - 2:43In a book or newspaper article,
-
2:43 - 2:45each sentence was read from beginning to end,
-
2:45 - 2:47page by page,
-
2:47 - 2:50in a straight line until you reached the end.
-
2:50 - 2:52But that isn't how our brains actually work.
-
2:52 - 2:54Each of our thoughts is linked to other thoughts,
-
2:54 - 2:56memories, and emotions
-
2:56 - 2:59in a loose interconnected network, like a web.
-
2:59 - 3:01Tim Berners-Lee, the father of the World Wide Web,
-
3:01 - 3:05understood that we needed a way to organize information
-
3:05 - 3:07that mirrored this natural arrangement.
-
3:07 - 3:10And the Web accomplishes this through hyperlinks.
-
3:10 - 3:12By linking several pages within a website
-
3:12 - 3:14or even redirecting you to other websites
-
3:14 - 3:17to expand on information or ideas immediately
-
3:17 - 3:18as you encounter them,
-
3:18 - 3:20hyperlinks allow the Web
-
3:20 - 3:23to operate along the same lines as our thought patterns.
-
3:23 - 3:25The Web is so much a part of our lives
-
3:25 - 3:27because in content and structure,
-
3:27 - 3:29it reflects both the wider society
-
3:29 - 3:31and our individual minds.
-
3:31 - 3:33And it connects those minds
-
3:33 - 3:34across all boundaries,
-
3:34 - 3:36not only enthnicity, gender, and age
-
3:36 - 3:38but even time and space.
