How Socialism Ruined My Country
-
0:02 - 0:05Many American millennials
seem to be drawn to socialism. -
0:05 - 0:10They came out in big numbers for Bernie
Sanders in the 2016 presidential primaries. -
0:10 - 0:14They rail against capitalism
on their college campuses. -
0:14 - 0:18They wear Che Guevara T-shirts
to signal their socialist virtue. -
0:18 - 0:20I know a lot about socialism.
-
0:20 - 0:25I live in Rio de Janeiro and I work throughout
Brazil as a journalist for a popular magazine. -
0:25 - 0:30In the early 2000s, Brazil’s economy
was growing rapidly. -
0:30 - 0:34The government had enacted economic
and monetary reforms and divested holdings -
0:34 - 0:39in some state-run companies, giving
the private sector more room to breathe. -
0:39 - 0:44Inflation - a chronic problem in Brazil -
was dramatically reduced. -
0:44 - 0:50Foreign investors poured into the country,
eager to catch a portion of our expanding economy. -
0:50 - 0:52The future seemed promising.
-
0:52 - 0:55But today,
our economy is in shambles, -
0:55 - 0:59unemployment and debt are
massive and powerful politicians -
0:59 - 1:02are being investigated for involvement
in the largest scandals -
1:02 - 1:05of fraud and corruption
in the country's history. -
1:05 - 1:07What happened?
-
1:07 - 1:12In 2002, a socialist politician named
Lula da Silva ran for the presidency. -
1:12 - 1:17He was a socialist, but painted himself
as a modern, cool kind of socialist. -
1:17 - 1:23He would be the politician who would
heal national divisions and unite everyone. -
1:23 - 1:26He even had a nickname,
“Lulinha paz e amor”, -
1:26 - 1:30which means "Little Lula peace and love"
in Portuguese. -
1:30 - 1:35But the old message about the need for income
redistribution to decrease inequality was still there. -
1:35 - 1:39The media, academic elite
and celebrities assured Brazilians that -
1:39 - 1:43by transferring the money from the rich to the poor,
the poor could finally be richer. -
1:43 - 1:49But the only ones who really got rich were
Lula and his corporate and political friends. -
1:49 - 1:54It only got worse under his successor,
Dilma Rousseff. -
1:54 - 1:59The socialists increased government
spending, deficits, and debt. -
1:59 - 2:01They called it a stimulus.
-
2:01 - 2:04They increased the minimum wage
and the benefits of social programs. -
2:04 - 2:07They called it social justice.
-
2:07 - 2:11They increased the salaries
and retirement benefits of the civil service. -
2:11 - 2:14They called it investing
in the future. -
2:14 - 2:18They handed out thousands of jobs
in the government and state-owned companies -
2:18 - 2:21as favors
to their political allies. -
2:21 - 2:23And they called it
good governance. -
2:23 - 2:25It worked for a while.
-
2:25 - 2:28Socialism always works
at the beginning. -
2:28 - 2:34But government spending just kept going up
and then Lula’s socialist paradise fell apart, -
2:34 - 2:35and the economy fell with it.
-
2:35 - 2:40The outcome: from 2008 to 2015,
government spending grew -
2:40 - 2:43nearly four times
as fast as tax revenue. -
2:43 - 2:50The economy shrank 3.8 percent in 2015,
the worst result in 25 years. -
2:50 - 2:55That same year, a World Bank survey found
Brazil’s economy to be one of the world’s worst. -
2:55 - 3:00Out of 189 countries, we were the 16th
hardest place to open a business, -
3:00 - 3:04the 60th most difficult nation
in which to register property, -
3:04 - 3:08and the 12th most complex
place to pay taxes. -
3:08 - 3:14Economically and morally, the almost 15 years
of Socialist policies have greatly harmed Brazil. -
3:14 - 3:19We also remain among the world's leaders
in murder and robbery, -
3:19 - 3:25and we rank near the bottom of industrialized
nations in terms of education and health care. -
3:25 - 3:29Americans take it for granted that
they can be born into the lower class -
3:29 - 3:32and reach the middle
or even upper class. -
3:32 - 3:35Many Brazilians take it for granted
that they can’t. -
3:35 - 3:38But finally some things
are starting to change. -
3:38 - 3:40There may be reason for hope.
-
3:40 - 3:46Today, more and more Brazilians see that capitalism
and limited government are the only way forward. -
3:46 - 3:51Thankfully for Brazil, Lula has been charged
in several lawsuits for corruption, -
3:51 - 3:56involvement in a criminal organization,
influence peddling, money laundering, -
3:56 - 3:58and obstruction
of justice. -
3:58 - 4:03Rousseff was impeached in 2016
for falsifying the government’s finances, -
4:03 - 4:08and illegally using money from state-owned
banks to run the government. -
4:08 - 4:12This crisis prompted the new government
to freeze federal spending, -
4:12 - 4:15reduce the government’s role
in state-owned companies, -
4:15 - 4:19and to encourage some of the massive
federal workforce to resign. -
4:19 - 4:25No one knows whether these basic measures
will be enough to rescue Brazil economically. -
4:25 - 4:31Truthfully, the damage has been so extensive,
it may take decades for the country to recover. -
4:31 - 4:35But if we do, it won’t be socialism
that saves us. -
4:35 - 4:37American millennials,
take note. -
