Thomas Deschamps, Interview de l'artiste peintre. [2012]
-
0:25 - 0:27THOMAS DESCHAMPS, artist-painter
-
0:32 - 0:34This is the place where I paint,
-
0:34 - 0:37my atelier near Montreuil.
-
0:37 - 0:40I usually arrive in the morning,
-
0:40 - 0:44I set everything up. I set my canvas.
-
0:45 - 0:48I always follow my little ritual:
-
0:48 - 0:51I get in, I turn on the music.
-
0:51 - 0:53Usually, I put on jazz because
-
0:53 - 0:56it gives a nice feeling when painting,
-
0:56 - 0:59as it has a lot of rhythm and is not too aggressive.
-
1:01 - 1:05So, this is what I call my laboratory.
-
1:24 - 1:28What gives me a thrill when I'm painting
-
1:28 - 1:31is the contrasts, composition, colors
-
1:31 - 1:33and also the shape.
-
1:33 - 1:35Considering this, one can think that
-
1:35 - 1:37there is an unbalance in my paintings
-
1:37 - 1:40but actually it is the dichotomy
-
1:40 - 1:44in creating balance in something that is unbalanced.
-
1:51 - 1:55I always follow this idea where I see myself
-
1:55 - 1:58as an aerialist with a pendulum,
-
1:58 - 2:01asking myself a question:
-
2:01 - 2:03why I put the stroke here and not there
-
2:04 - 2:07and how to counter-balance it.
-
2:15 - 2:22In my paintings, the main leitmotiv is the nexus,
-
2:22 - 2:25because it's a fundamental element of our society.
-
2:25 - 2:29It makes each one of us linked to one another,
-
2:29 - 2:32sometimes the string is invisible,
-
2:32 - 2:35for example, my pants or my t-shirt,
-
2:35 - 2:37it had to be created by someone,
-
2:37 - 2:39so it means that there was a human hand involved
-
2:39 - 2:42in the process of making it at some point.
-
2:42 - 2:44And with this invisible string we are all connected.
-
2:44 - 2:47It can be in virtual networks or
-
2:47 - 2:52highway systems or even your address book's network.
-
2:52 - 2:57It's an essential factor of our society.
-
2:57 - 3:02At the same time, by playing with perspectives,
-
3:02 - 3:06by interweaving and juxtaposing them,
-
3:06 - 3:11it creates an optical illusion and gives a distorted vision of them.
-
3:11 - 3:17Since we are coming towards a crucial moment, a time of changes,
-
3:17 - 3:22we are in the middle of this distorted perspective of the future
-
3:22 - 3:24and in the middle of questioning:
-
3:24 - 3:27will the future lead to something or
-
3:27 - 3:31are we heading towards a major mutation and
-
3:31 - 3:35a breakdown in evolution of our society?
-
3:35 - 3:40Because right now we are facing an economic crisis
-
3:40 - 3:42and also an ecological crisis.
-
3:42 - 3:45These two problems can't be avoided much longer
-
3:45 - 3:48and we'll soon be forced to resolve them.
-
3:48 - 3:50This is the reason why, in my paintings,
-
3:50 - 3:52one can get lost in these perspectives,
-
3:52 - 3:55navigate through these lines of force
-
3:55 - 3:57and at the same time get a strong feeling of obstruction.
-
3:57 - 4:00Somehow with these two aspects,
-
4:00 - 4:04where the first one is optimistic,
-
4:04 - 4:08and is represented by the bright, "pop" colors,
-
4:08 - 4:12
which is happy and linked to the childhood -
4:12 - 4:19where there is a great hope for renewal and transmutation.
-
4:19 - 4:24And on the other side, there is the horizon that is
-
4:24 - 4:26blocked by the lines of force that can also entrap.
-
4:29 - 4:32And the viewer can feel being in between these two aspects.
-
4:41 - 4:43For me, an artist's atelier is a real laboratory
-
4:43 - 4:47where there is a constant research, in painting, in my case,
-
4:50 - 4:54and this is what for is the most exciting.
-
4:54 - 4:58The research, perpetual exploration of grounds
-
4:58 - 5:00to define my universe, find the paths
-
5:03 - 5:07and through these paths bringing out the emotions.
-
5:08 - 5:12And and the end, when I create my paintings,
-
5:12 - 5:15it's all those emotions that I have lived and absorbed
-
5:15 - 5:19that do something that after several sketches
-
5:20 - 5:25I start to paint and I arrive to this final result...
