-
Good evening,
-
and thank you for joining me tonight
-
for this new hairstyling video.
-
This time we are going to focus
on a hairstyle inspired by the 20s,
-
but a simple and easy version.
-
Although I've never made a video
set in this era
-
I was inspired by the faux bob technique
-
to make my long hair look short
-
in the Noir videos I made this year
-
that were set in the 50s.
-
And tonight I will show you
-
how to achieve this fluffy short hair look,
-
especially if you have long
and straight hair like me.
-
I managed to find this doll's head
second hand,
-
with long enough hair
to show you the trick.
-
This is natural hair,
-
and it's so hard to find a doll's head
-
with natural hair which doesn't
have a terrifying face,
-
but this one is pretty.
-
No nightmare.
-
So, let's dive in.
-
First, I will need this straight hair
to be as voluminous as possible,
-
so I will use these vintage curlers
I always use for my own hair.
-
If your hair is already curly,
-
just skip this step of course.
-
These are from the 80s/90s,
-
but you can still easily find them.
-
I also tried these vintage foam/sponge rollers.
-
But they didn't really work for me
-
so I went back to the curlers.
-
These are from the 60s/70s.
-
They were very popular.
-
None of these are from the 20s of course,
-
I'm showing you how to make
this hairstyle nowadays.
-
If I wanted to do it with
historically accurate tools
-
I would use an antique curling iron
-
or the pin curling method,
-
and for that I would suggest a tutorial
-
by ALB in Whisperland,
-
I will put the links down below.
-
Now before I start rolling sections
of hair around the curlers,
-
I'm going to add a bit of oil on it.
-
Even it's real hair,
-
there is no longer any natural oil
-
coming from the scalp of course,
-
and the curling will be more efficient
if it's slightly greasy.
-
So...
-
If you've just washed your hair
-
of if it's a bit dry,
-
this is something you can do as well.
-
Using castor oil, olive oil, avocado oil
-
or any other oil of your choice.
-
I think I'm going to try hair pomatum.
-
This was traditionally used during
the 18th century,
-
and it's very greasy.
-
I think it will do the trick.
-
And it smells so good.
-
There is...
-
rose water, lemon,
-
orange flower, violets, and jasmine.
-
Let's try this.
-
But I don't want to be too heavy-handed,
-
just a little bit...
-
Starting from the scalp...
-
And going down to the tips...
-
A bit more...
-
I think this is enough.
-
The tips are dry.
-
Looks good.
-
Now it's ready,
-
I'm going to start with
the front section of hair here
-
and work my way all around
from the top
-
down to the back of the neck.
-
I'm going to need a comb and...
-
Here we go.
-
Rolling as tight as I can...
-
And here is the first one.
-
Let's keep going.
-
On the other side...
-
Alright, I'm out of curlers now
-
so I'm going to use
-
foam rollers.
-
I don't need as much volume for the back
-
so I will mainly use the biggest ones.
-
Alright.
-
Next.
-
Last one.
-
And that's it.
-
So I will have tighter curls
at the top and the front
-
and loose curls at the back
-
where I put the biggest foam rollers.
-
And now it's that time when
you have to wait at least 12 hours.
-
So you can do it in the morning
for the evening,
-
or as I usually do, in the evening
and sleep on it.
-
Which is not really comfortable
-
so what I like to do is
wrap a scarf around my head
-
to add more padding.
-
And I'll be right back.
-
Alright.
-
So it's been almost 20 hours now
-
since I left the doll's head with
her sea urchin look,
-
so it's more than enough.
-
Now I'm going to remove
the curlers and rollers,
-
one by one,
-
starting at the bottom.
-
And...
-
What I should have right now
-
are beautiful ringlets.
-
Looks good.
-
And let's keep going...
-
On the left...
-
The smallest ones...
-
Beautiful.
-
And I'm almost done
with the foam rollers.
-
And now let's remove the curlers.
-
Nice.
-
Last ones on the front...
-
Alright.
-
It looks good.
-
Now I will brush these curls out
-
to create this beautiful
voluminous effect that will
-
be much easier to work with.
-
And I will start at the bottom.
-
If you'd like to keep waves at the top,
-
you could use a few hair clips
-
so you won't pull them
brushing the lower curls.
-
I have vintage clips here
but these are a bit short.
-
It would be something like that.
-
I think I will start with my fingers only.
-
It's the first time I'm using this doll's head
-
so I'm not very familiar with this hair yet.
-
And I don't want to completely
take the ringlets apart so...
-
I will be honest,
-
it is not really turning out
the way I was expecting.
-
I think the hair might be to heavy.
-
But it's alright, I have enough
volume on the top
-
and the technique will remain
the same anyway.
-
So now I can create
my short hair look
-
by taking small sections of hair
-
that I will roll inwards
-
in a small bun.
-
So I can tuck it under the upper part.
-
I will use simple vintage bobby pins.
-
The colour looks fine,
-
it may be a bit too light.
-
And I will use a bit of hairspray as well.
-
And here we go.
-
I will try to keep the volume here
-
with these large waves.
-
You can choose the length you want
-
but usually the easiest place to pin it
-
is right behind the ear,
slightly above it.
-
And once I'm happy with the result
-
I can use a bit of hairspray.
-
And I will keep going like this
all around the head,
-
section by section.
-
I'm just smoothing the hair a little bit.
-
Making a little bun...
-
And now pinning it.
-
The length looks fine.
-
Another one...
-
I can take a bigger section of hair
for the back.
-
Good.
-
Let's roll this and...
-
Pin it.
-
One last for this part.
-
Perfect.
-
There.
-
Brushing gently so
I can keep the hair fluffy.
-
And here we go.
-
The length looks fine.
-
Now let's take care of the last part.
-
I might try to hold
one wave in place.
-
Let's give it a try.
-
Just like this.
-
And now I'm going to roll
the last part.
-
I'm going to need more bobby pins.
-
One last.
-
Now I'm going to arrange
some strands here and there
-
so I can achieve a nice shape.
-
Alright.
-
It's not perfect, a bit chaotic but...
-
No that bad.
-
The short hair effect is here.
-
And I like to keep it simple but
-
you could add a few hair ornaments
for a party or something.
-
Like those I've gathered here...
-
Just to add a fancy touch.
-
So I have a few feathery things here.
-
Very "Charleston".
-
White feathers...
-
and 2 headbands.
-
And this one with beads.
-
I think I will try this one.
-
Let's see.
-
So this would go on a side.
-
It's too large in my opinion.
-
Yes, I prefer this one.
-
She looks much better.
-
Now she's ready for the roaring 20s.
-
So I guess I will have to practice
a bit more with this doll head,
-
the hair is dryer and heavier than
on a my other 2
-
which also have natural hair
-
but much easier to work with.
-
I still hope you enjoyed this video
-
and, as always, I wish you
a very good night.
