When God talks back | Tanya Luhrmann | TEDxStanford

  • 0:11 - 0:14
What I want to talk about this morning
    is remarkable phenomenon
  • 0:14 - 0:17
that people not only talk to God
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    but they learn to experience
    God is talking back
  • 0:22 - 0:26
    Many many Americans are involved,
    and many other people
  • 0:26 - 0:29
are involved, as you may call,
    in a renewalist spirituality -
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    a kind of spirituality
which they want to experience God
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    intimately, personally and interactive;
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    they want to reach out,
touch the Divine here on earth
  • 0:41 - 0:43
I want to find out how they did that.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    I am anthropologist,
  • 0:46 - 0:50
my job is to immerse myself in
the world I come to study,
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    and to keep observing
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    so that at some degree,
I got a sense of what it take to
  • 0:56 - 0:57
become a Native in that world.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    Unlike Margret Mead &
    Rev. Gregory Bateson
  • 1:00 - 1:02
were pictured here in Papua New Guinea.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
I did this work in America.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
    I spent two years
in the renewalist church in Chicago,
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    another two years
in one of the Bay area.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
I went to Sunday Morning services.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
I was a member of House Group.
I was in the prayer's circle.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    I hang out with people.
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    I prayed with people.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
I really want to know how
their God became real to them.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
So let me begin by asking,
  • 1:26 - 1:28
who is the God in the church like this?
  • 1:28 - 1:31
God is God, God is big,
God is mighty, and holy and beyond.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
God is also a person among people,
  • 1:35 - 1:39
The Pastor in this kind of church
    want you to experience God
  • Not Synced
the way the earliest cycle of experience Jesus,
  • Not Synced
    They walked with Jesus.
  • Not Synced
    They ate with Jesus.
  • Not Synced
    They talked with Jesus,
  • Not Synced
    He was their friend,
  • Not Synced
And these pastors will tell you that
  • Not Synced
    You should put out
a cup of coffee for God,
  • Not Synced
You should have a beer with God
  • Not Synced
Go for a walk with God, hang out.
  • Not Synced
Do the kind of thing with God
  • Not Synced
that you get do with anyone who
you want to know as a person.
  • Not Synced
He cares about all the stuff
    in your life.
  • Not Synced
the little stuff, where you want to go
    in your summer vacation.
  • Not Synced
what shirt you want to wear
    tomorrow morning.
  • Not Synced
you can talk to him about that.
  • Not Synced
So I wanted to know how people learn to
    interact with God
  • Not Synced
    and how they felt God
    speaking back to them.
  • Not Synced
I knew they have learnt because
the newcomers came to this church,
  • Not Synced
and they would say things like:
  • Not Synced
    "God does talk to me."
  • Not Synced
and then six or eight months later
    they would say :
  • Not Synced
    "I recognize God's voice the way I
recognize my mum's voice on the phone . "
  • Not Synced
But I thought the church teach
  • Not Synced
think your mind is not the sort of fortress for your own generated thoughts, feelings and energies.
  • Not Synced
it is usual you thought is for your own generated thoughts, feelings and
  • Not Synced
you should think your mind is the place where you will be going to meet the God.
  • Not Synced
    and then some of thoughts
you might think that was yours,
  • Not Synced
They are really God's thoughts being given to you
  • Not Synced
and your job is to figure out
    who is God.
  • Not Synced
people did talk in the way suggested they would have
  • Not Synced
as they had experience they are not their own.
  • Not Synced
as a woman suggested to me when i was in the church,
  • Not Synced
i feel my mind was a screen, the image was projected on.
  • Not Synced
somebody else was in control that clicker.
  • Not Synced
of course, not all the thoughts would be good candidate that God would say.
  • Not Synced
people would look out thoughts that would be stood out.
  • Not Synced
that was more spontaneous than another thoughts.
  • Not Synced
thoughts would be louder and catch your attention.
  • Not Synced
one women was explaining to me how she learnt to discern God's speaking,
  • Not Synced
so people were praying over her one day,
  • Not Synced
and the phrase "go to Kansas" flashed in her mind.
  • Not Synced
her parents was in Kansas, so she thinking about visiting them.
  • Not Synced
this thought just captured her attention,]
  • Not Synced
this made her say ,what that come from.
  • Not Synced
so you could imagine there will be risks for this style of discerning God's voice.
