Hollow Knight Wanderer's Journal Book Analysis

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    bubala jano
  • 0:10 - 0:16
did you know that books are still a
thing like people not only still read
  • 0:16 - 0:20
books but actually make books too
    shocking I know
  • 0:20 - 0:24
I didn't realize this until fangamer
announced a whole new holo night
  • 0:24 - 0:28
Wanderers journal that would be released
    alongside the new physical collector's
  • 0:28 - 0:31
edition of the game this journal is
written from the perspective of a new
  • 0:31 - 0:36
character a ladybug named Elena on their
website team cherry explained that this
  • 0:36 - 0:42
new book would be an epic tome of
    exploration investigation and lore team
  • 0:42 - 0:46
cherry has also worked closely with the
authors Kari Fry and Ryan Novak to
  • 0:46 - 0:51
ensure that everything the book would be
totally accurate well Kari and Ryan were
  • 0:51 - 0:55
incredibly generous and sent me an
advance copy of the new journal they
  • 0:55 - 1:01
also sent me a packet of hot dogs for
some reason thanks Kerry Fry's artwork
  • 1:01 - 1:05
really does justice to re Gibson's
in-game sprites I mean just look at this
  • 1:05 - 1:09
drawing of fluke marm that Hall of God's
description is starting to make more
  • 1:09 - 1:13
sense now and all of this artwork is
    accompanied by Ryan's descriptions of
  • 1:13 - 1:18
all of the varies friends and foes found
in holo night and the amount of lore in
  • 1:18 - 1:22
this book is staggering first of all
this book does a good job at covering
  • 1:22 - 1:26
most of the lore in the game there isn't
much on the end game bosses but the book
  • 1:26 - 1:30
does go through each area discussing
most of the bosses and enemies as well
  • 1:30 - 1:34
    as theorizing about numerous
    miscellaneous background objects if
  • 1:34 - 1:38
you're new to hollow Knight lore this is
a great read but even lore experts like
  • 1:38 - 1:43
myself can find a few new tidbits of
lore so this book introduces a lot of
  • 1:43 - 1:47
small pieces of information for example
sleeping under whispering roots can give
  • 1:47 - 1:53
bugs vivid dreams this book also tells
us that leg eater is confirmed blind but
  • 1:53 - 1:57
at the same time this book also gives us
information on big events like the
  • 1:57 - 2:01
timeline of the infection spread through
hallow nest I will go through this new
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    information chronologically from where
it is in the book for the most part but
  • 2:04 - 2:08
I will jump around a bit to where needed
I'm also going to skip that random
  • 2:08 - 2:14
chapter on the manatees not sure why
that was even in there first up we have
  • 2:14 - 2:18
an explanation for the hot springs
according to Alan uh these Springs are
  • 2:18 - 2:21
the result of heat seeping up to the
    surface through underground vents
  • 2:21 - 2:25
of all the ways that the knight can
collect soul in the game the hotsprings
  • 2:25 - 2:29
have always been the strangest to me
according to Ellen ah the hot springs
  • 2:29 - 2:34
restore the body and soul but I always
thought the knight had to pull soul from
  • 2:34 - 2:38
somewhere else maybe there is soul in
the water sort of like how there is soul
  • 2:38 - 2:42
in the air according to the deep focused
charm so I guess by sitting in the water
  • 2:42 - 2:47
of the night absorbs the soul through
osmosis or something the journal makes a
  • 2:47 - 2:52
note of these strange plants calling
them pale ferns now anytime something is
  • 2:52 - 2:56
called pale we immediately have to think
of the pale beings in the kingdoms edge
  • 2:56 - 3:00
we can see something similar to the pale
ferns growing out of the ground there
  • 3:00 - 3:05
are also these strange vines that expand
outwards these seem to be sprouting from
  • 3:05 - 3:08
where the worms corpse can be found as
for why anything like this would be
  • 3:08 - 3:13
growing in forgotten crossroads I have
no idea is this from the white lady I
  • 3:13 - 3:17
only seem to think that it's just
natural so maybe that's the case the
  • 3:17 - 3:21
journal mentions that the temple of the
black egg was fashioned from the shell
  • 3:21 - 3:26
of an ancient bug now if that's the case
then this thing was fucking massive how
  • 3:26 - 3:30
does a creature that big even exist well
I guess the characters in the game are
  • 3:30 - 3:35
bugs and humans are canonically at least
five times bigger than bugs so I guess
  • 3:35 - 3:38
it's not that big of a deal what is a
big deal is how exactly they got the
  • 3:38 - 3:42
black egg through that door another
ancient bug mentioned in the journal is
  • 3:42 - 3:46
the one found at the top of kingdoms
edge some people have been saying that
  • 3:46 - 3:50
this corpse is the corpse of a worm but
we don't know exactly what kind of
  • 3:50 - 3:56
creature this was maybe it was just a
worm but with an O instead of a why have
  • 3:56 - 4:00
you ever wondered why the grub father
has all this random shit in his burrow
  • 4:00 - 4:06
like seriously masks shards pill or
    Pokemon dildos from etsy.com well
  • 4:06 - 4:10
apparently this is a common practice
among grubs they like to collect shiny
  • 4:10 - 4:14
things and hide them in their burrows
what I find more interesting is that
  • 4:14 - 4:19
Alona was apparently finding these grubs
and choosing not to free them what an
  • 4:19 - 4:23
    asshole
next up apparently all buzz are said to
  • 4:23 - 4:28
be attracted to the resting places of
powerful beings now this kind of makes
  • 4:28 - 4:33
sense we see one near the white lady's
cocoon thing and we also see one at the
  • 4:33 - 4:35
lake of on but we also see them in the
    back
  • 4:35 - 4:40
crown of mar musa rena so you're telling
me this oversized kickball of a boss is
  • 4:40 - 4:45
supposed to be as powerful as the white
lady i suppose it's possible wait does
  • 4:45 - 4:48
this mean benches or powerful beams too
now I think it's time we get into a
  • 4:48 - 4:53
meteor topic the timeline for the
infection that afflicted how nest and
  • 4:53 - 4:57
the surrounding areas has always been
incredibly vague but in this book we are
  • 4:57 - 5:02
actually given a few hints about how
things might have progressed there are
  • 5:02 - 5:05
two sentences stating that the fungal
    wastes have only recently become
  • 5:05 - 5:10
impacted by the infection Elena also
claims that deep nest has only recently
  • 5:10 - 5:13
been hit by the infection and that the
weavers had only recently left the
  • 5:13 - 5:18
kingdom she also claims that the doors
to the city of tears were closed in an
  • 5:18 - 5:21
attempt to keep the infection from
spreading into the capital the first
  • 5:21 - 5:25
outbreak of the infection ended with the
ceiling of the hall night inside the
  • 5:25 - 5:30
black egg according to the dung defender
despite this effort Halla nest was
  • 5:30 - 5:34
eventually brought low implying that the
    infection was still somehow influencing
  • 5:34 - 5:38
the kingdom from the hunters journal
entry for the light seed it appears as
  • 5:38 - 5:42
though the infection had been seeping
down into the ancient basin for quite
  • 5:42 - 5:45
some time implying that there was
infection coming from somewhere up above
  • 5:45 - 5:50
there is a line from midwife that hints
at deep nest infection happening shortly
  • 5:50 - 5:53
before the events of the game
she says that few would seek her
  • 5:53 - 5:58
services in recent times due to the
infection as for the weavers having left
  • 5:58 - 6:03
holliness recently there is still one
Weaver hanging around but I don't know
  • 6:03 - 6:06
if that really proves anything we can
see that young Weaver's did end up
  • 6:06 - 6:09
    getting infected
so maybe the weavers left before the
  • 6:09 - 6:13
sickness could claim the adults now this
    is where things get weird
  • 6:13 - 6:17
ellen:oh states that the hive is
unmarked by the spread of the infection
  • 6:17 - 6:22
this can't be true there are several
reasons to believe that the hive was hit
  • 6:22 - 6:26
by the infection first of all all of the
enemies explode with that same orange
  • 6:26 - 6:31
particle effect that regular enemies do
and don't say that shit is honey honey
  • 6:31 - 6:35
doesn't take on a gaseous form if it did
I'd be smoking it right now
  • 6:35 - 6:39
characters like the mantises and dung
defender give off white particles when
  • 6:39 - 6:44
hit because they aren't infected the
bees do not do this second the
  • 6:44 - 6:48
whispering route in the hive uses the
phrase light familiar and light is
  • 6:48 - 6:52
    usually
to the radiance third the hive husk
  • 6:52 - 6:56
which can only be found inside of the
hive has the same orange tint in its
  • 6:56 - 7:01
eyes which confirmed to the infection
has at least reached some of the bugs in
  • 7:01 - 7:06
the hive and finally we have team Kerry
confirming that the hive was infected in
  • 7:06 - 7:11
a reddit AMA after the death of Queen
Vespa so why does this passage say that
  • 7:11 - 7:14
the hive was unmarked by the spread of
the infection while there are two
  • 7:14 - 7:18
    possibilities the first possibility is
that I actually know the lore better
  • 7:18 - 7:24
than team cherry this is entirely
possible I am pretty smart i watch Rick
  • 7:24 - 7:28
and Morty the other possibility which i
think is more likely is the team cherry
  • 7:28 - 7:33
knowingly left us in the book we have
evidence that team cherry has altered
  • 7:33 - 7:37
some of the wording on these very pages
so I don't think they overlooked this
  • 7:37 - 7:41
but why would team cherry do that you
ask well this book is written by
  • 7:41 - 7:45
character in the world of how honest
which means that she is looking at the
  • 7:45 - 7:50
    world through her own limited
perspective let's be real of course team
  • 7:50 - 7:53
cherry wouldn't hand us a whole
    smorgasbord of mouth-watering new lore
  • 7:53 - 7:58
on a silver platter at least not without
making us work for it I don't think
  • 7:58 - 8:01
everything we find this book should be
taken as canon as some of these claims
  • 8:01 - 8:05
are just elinoz musings about how oddest
maybe team cherry should have put an
  • 8:05 - 8:10
asterisk next to that totally accurate
remark but that doesn't mean we should
  • 8:10 - 8:14
throw this whole book away as far as I
can tell this is the only blatantly
  • 8:14 - 8:19
wrong statement in the book and it still
offers interesting insight into the lore
  • 8:19 - 8:23
simple things that I had never even
thought of so while this book might have
  • 8:23 - 8:27
at least one lore inaccuracy I still
think we can glean some information from
  • 8:27 - 8:32
it well with that out of the way let's
move on to the crystal peak now this is
  • 8:32 - 8:36
an area of the game that I've neglected
in my videos but honestly there's a lot
  • 8:36 - 8:41
to talk about here the biggest question
regarding this area revolves around the
  • 8:41 - 8:45
    crystals basically there's a strong
    connection between these crystals and
  • 8:45 - 8:50
the radiance first the journal entry for
the crystal eyes husks mentions that
  • 8:50 - 8:53
there's a hidden power within the
crystals they can be used to fire
  • 8:53 - 8:58
searing beams of light and they also
apparently sing this is also mentioned
  • 8:58 - 9:02
by milla who claims that she can hear
    the crystals singing and then
  • 9:02 - 9:12
she can almost make it out and we all
know what happens to her after that the
  • 9:12 - 9:16
journal entry for the crystal guardian
also mentions that it can only see light
  • 9:16 - 9:21
inside of its crystal prison and that it
shoots blazing beams of light the word
  • 9:21 - 9:25
blazing has only used three other times
in the entire game and each instance
  • 9:25 - 9:30
refers to the radiance and during the
enraged Guardian fight we can see that
  • 9:30 - 9:34
it has dream nail dialogue that is
written in all caps this appears to be
  • 9:34 - 9:39
the radiances voice since her dream no
dialogue is also in all caps a lot of
  • 9:39 - 9:42
the dream no dialogue for the enemies in
this area reference light and the
  • 9:42 - 9:46
    whispering route mentioned something
about a refracted light and now we have
  • 9:46 - 9:51
L&S saying that this refracted light is
mesmerizing so I think we can safely say
  • 9:51 - 9:55
at this point that the crystals in the
crystal peak are somehow connected to
  • 9:55 - 9:59
the radiance is light it's not clear
whether the energy found inside these
  • 9:59 - 10:04
crystals are from the reigns's light or
some other source the deep focus charm
  • 10:04 - 10:09
implies that crystals might be able to
draw in soul somehow I'd recommend you
  • 10:09 - 10:12
check out this lore doc from metal if
you want to read more about this theory
  • 10:12 - 10:16
but what does the crystal peek have to
do with the radiance well it all has to
  • 10:16 - 10:21
do with hallow nests crowd this is one
of the most interesting pages in the
  • 10:21 - 10:24
    book
Elna describes the glyphs in this area
  • 10:24 - 10:28
is giving off a radiant light
she says the glyphs were likely from a
  • 10:28 - 10:33
    civilization that predates how honest
she mentions how some of the glyphs seem
  • 10:33 - 10:39
to display winged creatures which sure
she also theorizes that these glyphs
  • 10:39 - 10:43
    were made because the civilization
wanted to be remembered by future
  • 10:43 - 10:48
civilizations now there is a lot to
break down here these glyphs remind me
  • 10:48 - 10:51
of seals of binding and we know that
these seals can be used to preserve
  • 10:51 - 10:55
something of great importance so I guess
it makes sense that it could be used to
  • 10:55 - 11:00
preserve the memory of a people the seer
talks a lot about the importance of
  • 11:00 - 11:04
    being remembered the radiance also
mentions that she will not be forgotten
  • 11:04 - 11:08
the moth race was known for tending
graves after all and when the pale King
  • 11:08 - 11:13
arrived the seer explains that the moths
sealed the radiance away by forgetting
  • 11:13 - 11:16
about her so being remembered is a big
    part of
  • 11:16 - 11:22
both tribes tradition so this statue was
possibly built by the moths before the
  • 11:22 - 11:26
pale King arrived there's also a
developers note that says this lingering
  • 11:26 - 11:30
statue is what led to the outbreak of
the infection the fact that this is
  • 11:30 - 11:34
lingering implies that it was built
before the pale Kings arrival however
  • 11:34 - 11:39
the statue itself contains a pale or and
is resting atop a cliff that features a
  • 11:39 - 11:43
    design common in Halla nests
architecture so maybe this monument was
  • 11:43 - 11:48
made after the radiance was sealed away
and those hushed whispers of faith that
  • 11:48 - 11:51
seer talks about are referring to the
same people who built this monument in
  • 11:51 - 11:55
secret ellen:oh claims that the seer is
helping the knight to strike back
  • 11:55 - 11:59
against the radiance for causing the
infection but in the game all that is
  • 11:59 - 12:04
ever stated is that the seer is looking
for the wielder a figure her people have
  • 12:04 - 12:08
been dreaming about for a long time not
sure how Alona would know more than us
  • 12:08 - 12:14
on this matter I guess she can actually
talk unlike the knight so maybe she just
  • 12:14 - 12:18
straight-up asked her now this next bit
is something that makes so much sense I
  • 12:18 - 12:22
can't believe I never noticed it before
in the cast off shell where the Kings
  • 12:22 - 12:25
brain is found there is this strange
    object
  • 12:25 - 12:29
Helena theorized is that it might be
some sort of egg and looking at it now I
  • 12:29 - 12:33
can't believe I missed this this was
probably what The Pale King hatched out
  • 12:33 - 12:38
of after molting his worm form if this
is true then this puts to rest the whole
  • 12:38 - 12:42
idea that the pale King took on a third
form after his death in the white palace
  • 12:42 - 12:48
since there's no broken egg anywhere
near him Elna also mentions that arcane
  • 12:48 - 12:51
    eggs are jet-black
which I guess makes it even more likely
  • 12:51 - 12:56
that they are made of void I know I've
said before that black doesn't equal
  • 12:56 - 13:01
void but shut up another small detail we
got was an explanation for what these
  • 13:01 - 13:06
things are Elna believes that they were
used to extract soul from bugs and
  • 13:06 - 13:10
inject them into other bugs that could
explain why the room is filled with
  • 13:10 - 13:14
follies and mistakes which were the
results of experiments with soul gone
  • 13:14 - 13:19
wrong the machine itself also contains
the spell twister charm which reflects
  • 13:19 - 13:24
the desires of the soul sanctum for
mastery over Souls the journal also says
  • 13:24 - 13:28
that the Blue Lake is filled with
    blue-hued minerals explaining why the
  • 13:28 - 13:32
lake is a perfect place for quarrel
drown himself we also get confirmation
  • 13:32 - 13:37
that bar Doon is a caterpillar not sure
that was in question but it's not
  • 13:37 - 13:41
    confirmed anywhere else
we also learned the fog Canyon was once
  • 13:41 - 13:44
    a part of green path
this isn't stated anywhere in the game
  • 13:44 - 13:49
from what I can tell but it is alluded
to with green path music lightly playing
  • 13:49 - 13:54
in the fog Caden region of the world map
Alana also takes a stroll into the abyss
  • 13:54 - 13:59
and somehow survives she gives us a very
    interesting description for these
  • 13:59 - 14:03
    strange egg looking objects claiming
that they are colorless she also says
  • 14:03 - 14:08
that it seems they were broken from
within by a powerful force the comet
  • 14:08 - 14:12
that stands out most of me is the claim
that the eggs are colorless I always
  • 14:12 - 14:16
thought these eggs were just completely
black Elin also makes note of the sea
  • 14:16 - 14:21
avoid saying in acts with a mind of its
own so if the sea acts with a singular
  • 14:21 - 14:26
mind then that means that the sea avoid
isn't full of a bunch of individual void
  • 14:26 - 14:30
tendrils but instead is the collective
mind of the void itself that kind of
  • 14:30 - 14:34
weakens my theory that the void tendrils
were created by the ancient civilization
  • 14:34 - 14:40
but at the same time Ellen also calls
the void murky water what the fuck kind
  • 14:40 - 14:43
of water has she been drinking
Elna also claims that the abyss
  • 14:43 - 14:48
lighthouse was built atop a natural
spire it certainly does look like they
  • 14:48 - 14:52
just stuck the lighthouse part onto a
    pre-existing structure but does that
  • 14:52 - 14:57
mean that this thing formed naturally
this design is the same that we see in
  • 14:57 - 15:01
the background of the main room in the
abyss where the vessel shells are also
  • 15:01 - 15:04
underneath that we can see a pattern
very similar to the one where the void
  • 15:04 - 15:09
tendril entry can be found if all of
this is naturally occurring it would tie
  • 15:09 - 15:13
in to elder bugs common about the rocks
down in the ancient basin possessing a
  • 15:13 - 15:16
    will of their own
there is one strange detail regarding
  • 15:16 - 15:20
how Elaina interacts with the lore
tablet right outside of the abyss
  • 15:20 - 15:25
basically Elna says that she is unable
to decipher the tablet now these tablets
  • 15:25 - 15:29
are very unique in that they say higher
beings these words are for you alone
  • 15:29 - 15:35
from dev notes ama's and the king cell
description it seems as though higher
  • 15:35 - 15:38
beings is a phrase reserved for
characters like the pale king the
  • 15:38 - 15:43
radiance and the white lady but it seems
a bit odd to me that these tablets would
  • 15:43 - 15:45
    only exist
for the benefit of like three people
  • 15:45 - 15:50
there are a total of five lore tablets
that use the phrase higher beings one in
  • 15:50 - 15:55
the howling cliffs three in the Kings
pass and one in the ancient basin it
  • 15:55 - 15:59
isn't really clear who these tablets
were made for but there is a clue when
  • 15:59 - 16:05
the second lore tablet in the Kings pass
the tablet says let all bask in your
  • 16:05 - 16:10
majesty for only this kingdom could
produce one such as you so according to
  • 16:10 - 16:14
this lore tablet how unless somehow
produces higher beings I don't think the
  • 16:14 - 16:18
pale King was making godlike creatures
since he seemed to be interested in
  • 16:18 - 16:22
ruling how honest unopposed this has led
me to believe that the phrase higher
  • 16:22 - 16:27
beings is referring to bugs that the
pale King has granted higher thought to
  • 16:27 - 16:31
through his beacon so what does this
mean for Ellen ah why can't she read the
  • 16:31 - 16:35
tablets I'm pretty sure she's an
    intelligent bug she probably even
  • 16:35 - 16:39
watches Rick and Morty maybe this tablet
can only be read by bugs that were
  • 16:39 - 16:44
    specifically granted higher thought
through the pale Kings beacon so bugs
  • 16:44 - 16:49
like Alana tea so cloth though and corna
fur would be unable to read it since
  • 16:49 - 16:53
their intelligence is not native to howl
honest I'm pretty shaky on this though
  • 16:53 - 16:58
so feel free to tear my reasoning to
shreds and that's about it for new
  • 16:58 - 17:03
content there are quite a few things to
think about with this new book it adds a
  • 17:03 - 17:06
little bit of information to the world
of how honest giving us more thoughtful
  • 17:06 - 17:11
    descriptions of background objects and
environments no one in game says shit
  • 17:11 - 17:15
about holliness crown so it's nice to
hear at least one bugs perspective on it
  • 17:15 - 17:19
I do wish Eleanor would have told us a
little bit more about her own past she
  • 17:19 - 17:23
kind of lacks the backstory we see an
other traveller such as Oh cloth and tea
  • 17:23 - 17:28
so but I guess she's just trying to be
objective I'm sure people wouldn't be
  • 17:28 - 17:31
too happy if I started talking about my
first marriage in the middle of my
  • 17:31 - 17:36
analytical lore video now like I
mentioned before it appears as though
  • 17:36 - 17:40
there is a mistake in this book and it's
entirely possible the team chair left
  • 17:40 - 17:44
the mistake in the book since Alana is a
character from the world of how honest
  • 17:44 - 17:48
who doesn't have all of the information
this means we have to take her claims
  • 17:48 - 17:53
with an air of caution despite this most
of the information in this book seems
  • 17:53 - 17:57
pretty reasonable for the most part
enough raises a lot of things as poss
  • 17:57 - 18:01
abilities with a claim about the hive
being the only objective claim that I
  • 18:01 - 18:05
    think is downright false
regardless it's great to be able to hold
  • 18:05 - 18:09
a physical book about Halle Knight in my
hands and it looks great on any
  • 18:09 - 18:14
bookshelf - of course there is one final
piece of lore to discuss team cherry has
  • 18:14 - 18:18
finally listened to our cries and given
us confirmation of one of the most
  • 18:18 - 18:22
heated debates in Halle Knight lore
    discussion that's right
  • 18:22 - 18:27
pickles are finally canon just like in
    Rick and Morty
