The Dance Troupe Inspiring Beyoncé

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    (inspiring marching band music)
  • 0:01 - 0:04
[Kayla] It is a big adrenaline rush,
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    just being on the field.
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    Seeing all those people,
  • 0:07 - 0:09
you would think it makes you nervous,
  • 0:09 - 0:10
but it excites you even more.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
Soon as they hear the band,
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    everybody stops looking
    at the football game,
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    they put the cameras on
and all eyes are on you.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    Those lights flashing, cameras watching,
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    and the crowd goes crazy,
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    It's the J-Sette style.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    It's not something that you
    just see every single day.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    (crowd cheering)
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    (intense drumming)
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    My name is Kayla Gorden,
  • 0:33 - 0:34
I'm captain of the Prancing J-Settes,
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    here at Jackson State University.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    We're very known for J-Setting.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    J-Setting is a complex style:
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    It's a mixture of acrobatics
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    and African style, with
    a little bit of jazz.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
A lot of people compare us to gymnasts,
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    because we have a lot
    of stunts in our moves
  • 0:49 - 0:51
that most other teams don't have.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    Some of our signature
    moves would definitely be
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    the "salt and pepper."
  • 0:57 - 1:00
It's kinda of where we throw
    our arms back and forth.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    Another signature march
    we have is the "tiptoe."
  • 1:03 - 1:06
You're pulling your pelvis back and forth,
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    and your arms are just
    coming straight up and down.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    The "J-Sette walk," you're
    going to see our hips the most;
  • 1:13 - 1:15
they look like they finna pop out.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    "Bucking," and that's kind of
    just popping back and forth,
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    at a very fast pace.
  • 1:23 - 1:24
J-Setting is a word that stemmed here,
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    from Jackson State University
all the way back in 1971.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    - My name is Gloria Tatum.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
I am the founder of the
    Alumni J-Sette Organization.
  • 1:35 - 1:39
    I am also an original
    legendary prancing J-Sette.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    The J-Settes were originally majorettes.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    They were girls that would
march in front of the band,
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    but they held batons.
  • 1:47 - 1:48
    Shirley Millerton Blakely,
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    the sponsor at that particular
    time, had this great idea
  • 1:52 - 1:55
to bring the J-Settes to be dancers.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    And so, J-Setting was born.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    (quick drumming)
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    - [Kayla] Our training and practices
  • 2:02 - 2:05
is different from other dance teams.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
We run two miles under 18
    minutes every single day.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    We practice Monday through Friday.
  • 2:09 - 2:10
And then Saturday is the game.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
So out of the seven-day week,
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    you're with the J-Settes
    six of those days.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    - Four, five, six, LC.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    - [Kayla] Being a J-Sette
    is very competitive.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
We do have cuts each week before a game.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
Your spot is not guaranteed on the field.
  • 2:25 - 2:26
You're going to work hard for it,
  • 2:26 - 2:28
even if you're a new girl or an old girl.
  • 2:28 - 2:29
'Cause old girls can get cut too,
  • 2:29 - 2:30
even though you've been on the team
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    for two or three years,
you can get cut as well.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
It's set up to make you work even harder.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    J-Setting has become very influential
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    in different communities,
  • 2:42 - 2:44
as far as the LGBTQ community,
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    as far as choreographers.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
Knowing that a lot of people watch us,
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    and knowing that we
    influence a lot of people-
  • 2:51 - 2:53
like seeing Beyoncé, even seeing Ciara,
  • 2:53 - 2:55
do like a couple of our moves-
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    it's very exciting because
    it's letting you know
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    that big people like that
    are really watching you.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
We made a style for our own,
  • 3:02 - 3:03
and we made a name for ourselves.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
And lot of people know us
    and respect us from that.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    (horn blowing)

The Dance Troupe Inspiring Beyoncé

What started off as an innovative way to break free from traditional baton twirling has turned into a dance phenomenon, inspiring the likes of Ciara and Beyoncé. J-setting is a unique form of dance, originating in the 1970s when the ladies of the Jackson State University band traded their batons for a creative dance style that would not limit them physically.
