The Dance Troupe Inspiring Beyoncé
-
0:00 - 0:01(inspiring marching band music)
-
0:01 - 0:04[Kayla] It is a big adrenaline rush,
-
0:04 - 0:06just being on the field.
-
0:06 - 0:07Seeing all those people,
-
0:07 - 0:09you would think it makes you nervous,
-
0:09 - 0:10but it excites you even more.
-
0:10 - 0:12Soon as they hear the band,
-
0:12 - 0:14everybody stops looking
at the football game, -
0:14 - 0:17they put the cameras on
and all eyes are on you. -
0:17 - 0:19Those lights flashing, cameras watching,
-
0:19 - 0:20and the crowd goes crazy,
-
0:20 - 0:22It's the J-Sette style.
-
0:22 - 0:24It's not something that you
just see every single day. -
0:26 - 0:28(crowd cheering)
-
0:28 - 0:31(intense drumming)
-
0:31 - 0:33My name is Kayla Gorden,
-
0:33 - 0:34I'm captain of the Prancing J-Settes,
-
0:34 - 0:36here at Jackson State University.
-
0:36 - 0:38We're very known for J-Setting.
-
0:38 - 0:40J-Setting is a complex style:
-
0:40 - 0:42It's a mixture of acrobatics
-
0:42 - 0:45and African style, with
a little bit of jazz. -
0:45 - 0:47A lot of people compare us to gymnasts,
-
0:47 - 0:49because we have a lot
of stunts in our moves -
0:49 - 0:51that most other teams don't have.
-
0:53 - 0:56Some of our signature
moves would definitely be -
0:56 - 0:57the "salt and pepper."
-
0:57 - 1:00It's kinda of where we throw
our arms back and forth. -
1:00 - 1:03Another signature march
we have is the "tiptoe." -
1:03 - 1:06You're pulling your pelvis back and forth,
-
1:06 - 1:09and your arms are just
coming straight up and down. -
1:10 - 1:13The "J-Sette walk," you're
going to see our hips the most; -
1:13 - 1:15they look like they finna pop out.
-
1:15 - 1:17"Bucking," and that's kind of
just popping back and forth, -
1:17 - 1:20at a very fast pace.
-
1:23 - 1:24J-Setting is a word that stemmed here,
-
1:24 - 1:27from Jackson State University
all the way back in 1971. -
1:29 - 1:31- My name is Gloria Tatum.
-
1:31 - 1:35I am the founder of the
Alumni J-Sette Organization. -
1:35 - 1:39I am also an original
legendary prancing J-Sette. -
1:39 - 1:42The J-Settes were originally majorettes.
-
1:42 - 1:45They were girls that would
march in front of the band, -
1:45 - 1:47but they held batons.
-
1:47 - 1:48Shirley Millerton Blakely,
-
1:48 - 1:52the sponsor at that particular
time, had this great idea -
1:52 - 1:55to bring the J-Settes to be dancers.
-
1:55 - 1:57And so, J-Setting was born.
-
1:59 - 2:01(quick drumming)
-
2:01 - 2:02- [Kayla] Our training and practices
-
2:02 - 2:05is different from other dance teams.
-
2:05 - 2:07We run two miles under 18
minutes every single day. -
2:07 - 2:09We practice Monday through Friday.
-
2:09 - 2:10And then Saturday is the game.
-
2:10 - 2:12So out of the seven-day week,
-
2:12 - 2:15you're with the J-Settes
six of those days. -
2:15 - 2:18- Four, five, six, LC.
-
2:18 - 2:20- [Kayla] Being a J-Sette
is very competitive. -
2:20 - 2:22We do have cuts each week before a game.
-
2:22 - 2:25Your spot is not guaranteed on the field.
-
2:25 - 2:26You're going to work hard for it,
-
2:26 - 2:28even if you're a new girl or an old girl.
-
2:28 - 2:29'Cause old girls can get cut too,
-
2:29 - 2:30even though you've been on the team
-
2:30 - 2:32for two or three years,
you can get cut as well. -
2:32 - 2:34It's set up to make you work even harder.
-
2:38 - 2:41J-Setting has become very influential
-
2:41 - 2:42in different communities,
-
2:42 - 2:44as far as the LGBTQ community,
-
2:44 - 2:46as far as choreographers.
-
2:46 - 2:49Knowing that a lot of people watch us,
-
2:49 - 2:51and knowing that we
influence a lot of people- -
2:51 - 2:53like seeing Beyoncé, even seeing Ciara,
-
2:53 - 2:55do like a couple of our moves-
-
2:55 - 2:57it's very exciting because
it's letting you know -
2:57 - 2:59that big people like that
are really watching you. -
3:00 - 3:02We made a style for our own,
-
3:02 - 3:03and we made a name for ourselves.
-
3:03 - 3:06And lot of people know us
and respect us from that. -
3:08 - 3:11(horn blowing)
- Title:
- The Dance Troupe Inspiring Beyoncé
- Description:
-
What started off as an innovative way to break free from traditional baton twirling has turned into a dance phenomenon, inspiring the likes of Ciara and Beyoncé. J-setting is a unique form of dance, originating in the 1970s when the ladies of the Jackson State University band traded their batons for a creative dance style that would not limit them physically. Today, J-setting has become a sensation, making its way into pop culture and finding legions of fans.
