Change your brain, change your life | Daniel Amen | TEDxOrangeCoast
-
0:02 - 0:04Good afternoon.
-
0:04 - 0:07I am so excited to be here.
-
0:07 - 0:09I actually film all my shows here
-
0:09 - 0:11at the Orange County
Performing Arts Center. -
0:11 - 0:16So, innovation is a brain function.
-
0:16 - 0:21It is dependent on
the physical health of your brain. -
0:21 - 0:25So, did you know obviously, your brain
is involved in everything you do: -
0:25 - 0:31how you think, how you feel, how you act,
how you get along with other people. -
0:31 - 0:33At the Amen Clinics, we have looked
-
0:33 - 0:37at over 63,000 brain scans
over the last 20 years, -
0:37 - 0:42and it is very clear to me
that your brain is the organ of judgment, -
0:42 - 0:46personality, character, and innovation.
-
0:46 - 0:50And when you brain works right,
-
0:51 - 0:53you work right.
-
0:53 - 0:56And when your brain is troubled,
-
0:56 - 1:00you are much more likely
to have trouble in your life. -
1:00 - 1:04So what you see on the screen
are two brain SPECT scans. -
1:04 - 1:08SPECT is the study
that we do in our clinic. -
1:08 - 1:10It is a very sophisticated
brain imaging study -
1:10 - 1:13that looks at blood flow
and activity patterns. -
1:13 - 1:15It looks at how your brain works.
-
1:15 - 1:20And it basically shows us three things:
areas of the brain that work well, -
1:20 - 1:23areas of the brain
that are low in activity, -
1:23 - 1:25and areas of the brain
that are high in activity. -
1:25 - 1:28So good activity, too little, or too much.
-
1:28 - 1:31And then our job becomes balancing it.
-
1:31 - 1:33The image on your left is a healthy scan.
-
1:33 - 1:37It shows full, even, symmetrical activity.
-
1:37 - 1:41The color doesn't mean
anything, it's the shape. -
1:41 - 1:45The image on the right
is an alcoholic scan. -
1:45 - 1:48Alcohol is directly toxic
to brain function. -
1:48 - 1:50I know many of you believe
-
1:50 - 1:53you have to have
your two glasses of red wine a day -
1:53 - 1:55because it's good for your heart.
-
1:55 - 1:57It is not good for your brain.
-
2:01 - 2:05With a healthy brain,
it's very clear to me -
2:05 - 2:09you're happier, healthier,
wealthier, you're wiser, -
2:09 - 2:12you're more creative, more innovative.
-
2:12 - 2:16When your brain is not healthy,
for whatever reason: -
2:16 - 2:19you had a brain injury,
you have a terrible diet, -
2:19 - 2:22you live in a toxic environment,
-
2:22 - 2:27you're sadder, sicker,
poorer, not as smart. -
2:27 - 2:30You're more rigid, and you're inflexible,
-
2:30 - 2:34which is the opposite of innovation.
-
2:36 - 2:40I've said this tens of thousands of times,
and it always blows me away. -
2:40 - 2:44Your brain is the most complicated
organ in the universe. -
2:44 - 2:48There is nothing as complex
as the human brain, nothing. -
2:48 - 2:51It is estimated we have
100 billion nerve cells. -
2:51 - 2:55And each nerve cell is connected
to other nerve cells, -
2:55 - 2:57not in a one-to-one connection,
-
2:57 - 3:03but up to 10,000 individual
connections between cells. -
3:03 - 3:07Which means you have
more connection in your skull -
3:07 - 3:10than there are stars in the Universe.
-
3:10 - 3:16Information in your brain
travels at about 268 miles an hour. -
3:16 - 3:19Unless, of course, you're drunk.
-
3:21 - 3:24And even though your brain
is only 2% of your body's weight, -
3:24 - 3:30it uses 20 to 30%
of the calories that you consume. -
3:30 - 3:35So, of the breakfast you had this morning,
or the lunch you had this afternoon, -
3:35 - 3:41almost a third of it goes to feed
2% of your body's weight. -
3:41 - 3:46Your brain is the most expensive
real estate in your body. -
3:47 - 3:53On average, you lose
85,000 brain cells a day. -
3:53 - 3:55And what we've discovered
at the Amen Clinics -
3:55 - 4:01is you can accelerate the aging
process with your behavior, -
4:01 - 4:04or you can decelerate it.
-
4:04 - 4:06How exciting is that?
-
4:08 - 4:12The health of your brain
also decelerates innovation, -
4:12 - 4:14or it accelerates it.
-
4:14 - 4:17So what are the things
that hurt your brain? -
4:17 - 4:18Brain injury should be obvious.
-
4:18 - 4:21I just finished the largest NFL study,
-
4:21 - 4:24brain imaging study
on retired NFL players. -
4:24 - 4:27The NFL is no longer lying
about brain injuries. -
4:27 - 4:30They're taking it much more seriously.
-
4:30 - 4:34Do not let your kids play tackle football,
or hit soccer balls with their head. -
4:34 - 4:39Come on, the brain is very soft,
about the consistency of soft butter. -
4:39 - 4:42And your skull is really hard,
-
4:42 - 4:46and it has many sharp, bony ridges.
-
4:46 - 4:48You have to protect it.
-
4:48 - 4:50Drugs and alcohol should be obvious,
-
4:50 - 4:54but what our country
has no clue yet, but is learning, -
4:54 - 4:58is that obesity damages brain function.
-
4:58 - 5:01There are now ten studies.
-
5:01 - 5:04We just published a study
in the Nature journal, "Obesity", -
5:04 - 5:07that says as your weight goes up,
-
5:07 - 5:13the actual physical size and function
of your brain goes down. -
5:15 - 5:16Whoa.
-
5:16 - 5:19That should scare the fat off anyone.
-
5:19 - 5:21(Laughter)
-
5:21 - 5:25I read that study, the first one
that came out about three years ago, -
5:25 - 5:27I dropped 25 pounds.
-
5:27 - 5:33I was serious, when it comes
to the brain, size matters. -
5:33 - 5:36You do not want a smaller brain.
-
5:37 - 5:38(Laughter)
-
5:40 - 5:43Smoking constricts
blood flow to the brain. -
5:43 - 5:46Like it prematurely ages your skin,
it prematurely ages the brain. -
5:46 - 5:49High blood pressure,
as your blood pressure goes up, -
5:49 - 5:52the blood flow to your brain goes down.
-
5:52 - 5:56So you need to know your blood pressure
on a regular basis, -
5:56 - 5:59and if it's high, take it seriously.
-
5:59 - 6:03Diabetes, standard American diet,
environmental toxins, -
6:03 - 6:09lack of exercise, and something I call
ANTs - Automatic Negative Thoughts, -
6:09 - 6:13the thoughts that come into your mind
automatically and ruin your day. -
6:13 - 6:18They are the seeds
of anxiety disorders and depression. -
6:18 - 6:21So if this is true, it is,
-
6:21 - 6:24what are the things you can do
to help your brain? -
6:24 - 6:26Positive social connections.
-
6:26 - 6:29Unbelievable, the people
you spend time with -
6:29 - 6:32determine your longevity.
-
6:32 - 6:33Isn't that interesting?
-
6:33 - 6:35If you spend time with people
-
6:35 - 6:39who have healthy health habits,
-
6:39 - 6:42you pick those up,
because people are contagious. -
6:42 - 6:46If you spend time with people
who do not have healthy habits, -
6:46 - 6:48you die early.
-
6:49 - 6:52Become very serious
about who you spend your time with. -
6:52 - 6:55New learning, so TED is perfect for this.
-
6:55 - 6:59Whenever you learn something new,
your brain makes a new connection. -
6:59 - 7:04When you stop learning, your brain
actually starts to disconnect itself. -
7:04 - 7:07Diet is absolutely essential.
-
7:07 - 7:12You are consuming the nutrients
that are helping you, -
7:12 - 7:15or the toxins that hurt you.
-
7:16 - 7:18The SAD diet, the Standard American Diet,
-
7:18 - 7:23is not only associated with heart disease,
cancer, and diabetes. -
7:23 - 7:26It's associated with depression,
-
7:26 - 7:30attentional problems,
and Alzheimer's disease. -
7:30 - 7:32Food is medicine, or it is poison.
-
7:32 - 7:36Sleep, again it's absolutely essential.
-
7:36 - 7:41Because you know, in 1900, we got,
on average, nine hours of sleep at night. -
7:41 - 7:45In 2011, we get six hours
of sleep at night. -
7:45 - 7:50Less than seven hours of sleep, you get
lower overall blood flow to the brain. -
7:50 - 7:53Your brain cannot go through
that kind of transition -
7:53 - 7:56in such a short period of human history,
-
7:56 - 7:59without there being
very serious consequences. -
7:59 - 8:01And as sleep goes down, weight goes up,
-
8:01 - 8:04because your cravings get out of control.
-
8:04 - 8:07So, being physically healthy is important.
-
8:07 - 8:11But having anxiety is important.
-
8:11 - 8:14Did you know there are
great studies with longevity, -
8:14 - 8:16and the children who were
-
8:16 - 8:19the "Don't worry,
be happy" children die early, -
8:19 - 8:24because they didn't take
their health seriously enough. -
8:25 - 8:29I hope I give you a little anxiety.
-
8:30 - 8:32You know, I'm a psychiatrist by training.
-
8:32 - 8:36I was teaching people to chill out,
and what I came to realize, -
8:36 - 8:41is I need to motivate them a little bit
and just increase their fear, -
8:41 - 8:45so that the double cheeseburgers
are not calling their name. -
8:45 - 8:47Meditation fooled us.
-
8:47 - 8:51What we thought, you know,
meditate, zone out, brain calms down. -
8:51 - 8:53Absolutely not like that at all.
-
8:53 - 8:56When people meditate,
it activates the front part of their brain -
8:56 - 9:00which is the most human,
thoughtful part of their brain. -
9:00 - 9:02You want the best antidepressant?
-
9:02 - 9:04It's not Prozac, it's gratitude.
-
9:04 - 9:07You write down three things
you're grateful for every day. -
9:07 - 9:09Within three weeks you'll notice
-
9:09 - 9:13a significant difference
in your level of happiness. -
9:13 - 9:17ANT-killing means don't believe
every stupid thought you have. -
9:17 - 9:20You go, "OK, Dr. Amen, you've been
a psychiatrist for 30 years. -
9:20 - 9:22Single most important thing
people can do?" -
9:22 - 9:25Don't believe every stupid
thought you have. -
9:25 - 9:29Have this little question,
in your head, "Is it true?" -
9:29 - 9:34So when you feel like your husband
doesn't love you, is it true? -
9:34 - 9:39Because when you question your thoughts,
you live in a more rational world. -
9:40 - 9:44Here are examples
of three 60-year-old brains. -
9:44 - 9:46One with Alzheimer's disease.
-
9:46 - 9:48One that is overweight,
that has sleep apnea, -
9:48 - 9:52which is a disaster for brain function.
-
9:52 - 9:53And a healthy scan.
-
9:53 - 9:54Which brain do you want?
-
9:54 - 9:57I know which brain I want.
-
9:59 - 10:02Here are five ways brain imaging
will change everything you do. -
10:02 - 10:06The first thing,
it will give you brain envy. -
10:06 - 10:07(Laughter)
-
10:08 - 10:12So, I started doing scans in 1991.
-
10:13 - 10:18I was 37 years old,
and I scanned my own brain. -
10:18 - 10:21And I looked at it,
compared to a lot of other scans, -
10:21 - 10:26and I went, "Yuck,
too many bumps, bumpy places." -
10:26 - 10:28And I've actually never drank.
-
10:28 - 10:31I got drunk when I was 16,
I had a hangover for five days. -
10:31 - 10:33I went, "This is not for me."
-
10:35 - 10:37Never smoked, never did drugs.
-
10:37 - 10:40I'm like, "Why does my brain look so bad?"
-
10:40 - 10:44But at the time, I had
a lot of bad brain habits. -
10:44 - 10:46I only slept four or five hours a night
-
10:46 - 10:48because I was driven.
-
10:50 - 10:54I was drinking diet soda
like she was my best friend. -
10:54 - 10:55And I carried more weight,
-
10:55 - 10:59was under chronic stress, and it showed.
-
10:59 - 11:04And so, since I saw my scan,
and developed brain envy, -
11:04 - 11:07at 52, I scanned myself again,
and it's much younger. -
11:07 - 11:09My brain looks better.
-
11:09 - 11:11And you know, you can do that.
-
11:11 - 11:13That's the cool thing about the brain.
-
11:13 - 11:16You've probably heard
about brain plasticity. -
11:16 - 11:19But if you make good decisions today,
-
11:19 - 11:21we found this out with our NFL study,
-
11:21 - 11:26that you can start to improve
your brain within two months. -
11:26 - 11:30It's like, how exciting is that?
-
11:30 - 11:34And, with a better brain,
everything in your life is better; -
11:34 - 11:38from your body to your money,
to your relationships, -
11:38 - 11:41to the level of innovation.
-
11:42 - 11:45The second thing is, since brain imaging,
-
11:45 - 11:48I would never let my kids
play tackle football. -
11:48 - 11:51When does the brain finish developing?
-
11:54 - 11:56Twenty-five.
-
11:57 - 12:00Your brain, and in males,
-
12:00 - 12:02some people think it's more like 28.
-
12:04 - 12:09So the idea that you are an adult at 18,
-
12:09 - 12:13from the neuroscience perspective,
is just flat-out stupid. -
12:13 - 12:16And the insurance companies know that.
-
12:16 - 12:20When do your insurance rates
change and stabilize? Twenty-five. -
12:20 - 12:24Why? Because you're
making better decisions. -
12:24 - 12:27And the decisions you make
are a brain function. -
12:27 - 12:31So do not let your kids
put their brains at risk. -
12:31 - 12:34You'll take environmental toxins
so much more seriously. -
12:34 - 12:39This is one of the firefighters
that we scanned recently. -
12:39 - 12:41And you see this overall low activity.
-
12:41 - 12:44Those holes? He doesn't have
physical holes in his brain. -
12:44 - 12:48What he has is
serious overall low activity. -
12:49 - 12:52You'll take your weight
a whole bunch more seriously. -
12:54 - 12:59And you'll think about the early detection
and prevention of Alzheimer's disease. -
12:59 - 13:05Alzheimer's disease is expected
to triple in the next 25 years -
13:05 - 13:08We cannot afford this.
-
13:08 - 13:10And how you prevent Alzheimer's disease?
-
13:10 - 13:14Is you prevent all the illnesses
that are associated with it, -
13:14 - 13:18like heart disease, cancer, diabetes,
-
13:18 - 13:22depression, and high blood pressure.
-
13:23 - 13:28So, how to create a brain-smart
world to accelerate individuals? -
13:28 - 13:30This is my goal.
-
13:31 - 13:35And we see individuals and families
at the Amen Clinics, -
13:35 - 13:38but we're very interested in schools,
-
13:38 - 13:42in churches, businesses, and communities.
-
13:46 - 13:48And, I love this.
-
13:48 - 13:53Andy came to see me about four months ago.
-
13:53 - 13:54First time, about ten years ago,
-
13:54 - 13:57when he was 53, and his brain
just looked awful. -
13:57 - 14:02And I got him to buy
into the program of brain health. -
14:02 - 14:04And, this is what his brain
looked like ten years later. -
14:04 - 14:06Isn't that cool?
-
14:09 - 14:12And I want to talk
about getting systems involved. -
14:12 - 14:16So, I was working on my new show.
-
14:18 - 14:21And while I was working
on my show, I went to church. -
14:23 - 14:25And my wife said she'd drop Chloe off,
-
14:25 - 14:29our seven-year-old, at children's church,
and I would go save us seats. -
14:29 - 14:34And, it's at a very large church nearby,
and it's not Saddleback. -
14:34 - 14:37And as I walked into church,
-
14:37 - 14:41I passed 500 donuts for sale.
-
14:42 - 14:44And I was just irritated.
-
14:46 - 14:51And then I walked by bacon
and sausage cooking on the grill. -
14:51 - 14:53And I'm furious.
-
14:53 - 14:55And right before I go into the sanctuary,
-
14:55 - 14:59they're cooking hundreds of hot dogs
-
15:00 - 15:02for something after church.
-
15:02 - 15:06And as I sat down in the sanctuary,
the minister started talking -
15:06 - 15:10about the ice cream festival
they had the night before. -
15:11 - 15:13And, I'm nearly psychotic at this point.
-
15:13 - 15:15(Laughter)
-
15:15 - 15:19And when my wife found me,
I was typing on my phone, -
15:19 - 15:21which she hates.
-
15:21 - 15:24And she gave me that look
that only your wife can give you, -
15:24 - 15:29that said, "Why the hell are you
on this thing in church?" -
15:29 - 15:30(Laughter)
-
15:30 - 15:32And I showed her what I was writing:
-
15:32 - 15:35"Go to church, get donuts, sausage,
-
15:35 - 15:38bacon, hot dogs, ice cream.
-
15:38 - 15:40They have no idea.
-
15:40 - 15:43They're sending people to heaven early!"
-
15:43 - 15:45(Laughter)
-
15:47 - 15:50It's like, not the plan.
-
15:50 - 15:51(Laughter)
-
15:51 - 15:55And I have no idea what the minister
said the rest of that service. -
15:55 - 15:57I just sat there,
-
15:58 - 16:03praying that God would use me
to change churches. -
16:03 - 16:05Because this isn't the plan.
-
16:06 - 16:09No lie, two weeks later,
-
16:09 - 16:11Rick Warren calls me.
-
16:13 - 16:16He said, "Dr. Amen,
we're doing this program -
16:16 - 16:19called Decade of Destiny
in the next ten years at Saddleback. -
16:20 - 16:24I want to get the congregation
and myself healthy. -
16:24 - 16:26Will you help me?"
-
16:26 - 16:30I'm like, "Oh my God,
God was paying attention." -
16:30 - 16:31(Laughter)
-
16:32 - 16:37Often in my life I don't feel
like that, but I'm so excited. -
16:37 - 16:40And so we have put together a program
-
16:40 - 16:44called The Daniel Plan:
God's Prescription for your Health, -
16:44 - 16:46for the 30,000 members at Saddleback.
-
16:46 - 16:49And we give them
the opportunity to sign up -
16:49 - 16:50for the research part of the program.
-
16:50 - 16:56We now have nearly 15,000 people
in our research study. -
16:56 - 16:59Saddleback, as we developed
the Daniel Plan, -
16:59 - 17:03is connected
to 400,000 churches around the world. -
17:03 - 17:07Next year, after we've beta tested
this year, we're going to export it. -
17:07 - 17:10I couldn't be more excited about this.
-
17:10 - 17:13And we deliver the content
through small groups. -
17:13 - 17:17Why? Because people get well in groups.
-
17:17 - 17:21They get well as families,
they get well in support groups. -
17:21 - 17:23And after three months,
-
17:23 - 17:28the church has already lost
160,000 pounds. -
17:28 - 17:33People report improved energy,
focus, creativity, sleep, mood, -
17:33 - 17:38reductions in asthma, stress,
blood pressure, blood sugars, -
17:38 - 17:39and many medications.
-
17:39 - 17:45We have our own Daniel Plan menu,
and I have my challenges. -
17:45 - 17:49I am still trying to get them
to kill the donuts at church. -
17:50 - 17:53You might pray for me.
-
17:53 - 17:55(Laughter)
-
17:57 - 17:59I couldn't be more excited
-
17:59 - 18:05to be part of what has the potential
to change the world -
18:05 - 18:07from the church up.
-
18:07 - 18:12But you know, it also needs
to happen from the school up. -
18:12 - 18:15The food they serve
your children is a scandal, -
18:15 - 18:17and research suggests
-
18:17 - 18:22that it actually increases
attentional and behavior problems. -
18:22 - 18:24There's three studies now
in the journal The Lancet -
18:24 - 18:26that said, "put kids on elimination diet,"
-
18:26 - 18:30which basically means eliminate
all the crap in their diet. -
18:30 - 18:33And within three months, 73% of them
-
18:33 - 18:38show greater than a 50% reduction
in their symptoms. -
18:38 - 18:39This isn't hard.
-
18:41 - 18:43We need to change our society, though.
-
18:43 - 18:46From businesses up, from hospitals up.
-
18:46 - 18:48I went and visited my aunt
in the hospital, -
18:48 - 18:52I said, "I have to get you out of here,
the food is going to kill you." -
18:52 - 18:53(Laughter)
-
18:55 - 19:00Brain health and innovation
are intimately connected. -
19:01 - 19:05Please help me create
a brain healthy world. -
19:05 - 19:07Thank you.
-
19:07 - 19:08(Applause)
