Cordyceps: attack of the killer fungi - Planet Earth Attenborough BBC wildlife
-
0:00 - 0:03>> DAVID ATTENBOROUGH: Incredibly, 80 percent of all insects
-
0:03 - 0:05live in jungles.
-
0:05 - 0:08Few are more successful
than the ants. -
0:08 - 0:13There can be eight million
individuals in a single hectare. -
0:14 - 0:18But jungle ants don't
have it all their own way. -
0:24 - 0:28These bullet ants are showing
some worrying symptoms. -
0:29 - 0:34Spores from a parasitic
fungus called cordyceps have -
0:34 - 0:38infiltrated their
bodies and their minds. -
0:43 - 0:48Its infected brain
directs this ant upwards, -
0:50 - 0:55then utterly disorientated, it
grips a stem with its mandibles. -
0:55 - 0:58Those afflicted, if they're
discovered by the workers, -
0:58 - 1:03are quickly taken away and
dumped far away from the colony. -
1:04 - 1:09It seems extreme, but
this is the reason why. -
1:10 - 1:13Like something out of science
fiction, -
1:13 - 1:19the fruiting body of the cordyceps erupts
from the ant's head. -
1:20 - 1:24[EERIE MUSIC]
-
1:33 - 1:35It can take three weeks to grow.
-
1:35 - 1:40And when finished, the deadly
spores will burst from its tip. -
1:40 - 1:42Then, any ant in the
vicinity will be -
1:42 - 1:45in serious risk of death.
-
1:47 - 1:49The fungus is so virulent,
-
1:49 - 1:52it can wipe out whole
colonies of ants. -
1:52 - 1:56And it's not just ants that
fall victim to this killer. -
1:58 - 2:00There are literally thousands
-
2:00 - 2:03of different types
of cordyceps fungi. -
2:03 - 2:08And remarkably, each
specializes on just one species. -
2:09 - 2:42[ Music ]
-
2:43 - 2:46But these attacks do
have a positive effect -
2:46 - 2:49on the jungle's diversity, since parasites
-
2:49 - 2:53like these stop any one group of
animal getting the upper hand. -
2:55 - 2:57The more numerous a species becomes,
-
2:57 - 3:00the more likely it'll be attacked by its nemesis,
-
3:00 - 3:03a cordyceps fungus.
