The college experience

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    - In college there is so much freedom
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    in terms of time, scheduling.
  • 0:05 - 0:06
    - You're not only choosing
    your own schedule,
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    but you're choosing what
    classes you want to take,
  • 0:10 - 0:12
what classes you don't want to take.
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    - Around the time of freshman orientation
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    we were given these booklets
    with hundreds of courses
  • 0:16 - 0:20
    that you could take from
    dozens of different departments
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    and programs and I thought
it would be a good idea
  • 0:23 - 0:26
to just grab a highlighter and
    go through every single page
  • 0:26 - 0:30
and mark up every class that
    sounded remotely interesting
  • 0:30 - 0:33
and at the end of this, when
I got to the end of the book,
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    I probably had about
    60 courses highlighted.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    Concepts of the cosmos,
    sociology of the school,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    race in American, U.S. education.
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    - The cool thing about college is
  • 0:43 - 0:46
that any given point, in any given day,
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    you're going to run into
    a really amazing person
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    who's going to blow your
    mind about something
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    that you haven't thought about.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    - The support system is amazing.
  • 0:54 - 0:55
All the kids here are so passionate
  • 0:55 - 0:57
and they're so into their learning.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    I think that's what I find
    different than high school.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
I'm not the one that's pushing and pushing
  • 1:02 - 1:04
and everybody else is just satisfied
  • 1:04 - 1:06
with doing what they need to graduate.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    - The students actually want to be there.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    That's a big difference
    than high school to college.
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    Everybody is really friendly.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    There's not as much clicks.
  • 1:15 - 1:19
    Everybody is just cool,
nice, you can talk to anyone.
  • 1:19 - 1:20
That's the best thing about college.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    - Just being exposed to
    new ideas, new people,
  • 1:23 - 1:23
    new cultures.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    It's completely mind changing.
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    - I work three jobs.
  • 1:26 - 1:27
I work at the admissions office,
  • 1:27 - 1:28
I work for my cultural center,
  • 1:28 - 1:31
and I work at my residential college.
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    I studied abroad twice.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
Once in Madrid and once in London
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    and I've had two internships,
  • 1:35 - 1:37
one in Minneapolis and one in Alaska,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    and over the course of
    all these experiences
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    there have been several instances
  • 1:40 - 1:44
where I'm just like I cannot
    believe how radically different
  • 1:44 - 1:46
my life is now than it was before.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    - Because it's fun to look at Shakespeare
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    when you're actually in London
  • 1:49 - 1:52
or it's fun to be able to dream something
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    and then work for it
    and then see it happen.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    - I cannot believe,
    everyday I am so surprised
  • 1:57 - 2:01
by how much I have grown
since I was in high school.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
When I was in high school and
    I was looking at colleges,
  • 2:03 - 2:06
I had no idea how I was going to fair.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
I didn't know how I was going to succeed.
  • 2:08 - 2:13
It seemed like this big thing so far away
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    that everyone else was
    in on except for me.
  • 2:15 - 2:20
I really found myself and I know who I am
  • 2:20 - 2:23
and I'm just so excited by continuing
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    this intellectual journey.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    It's just something that's
    very exciting to me.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    - Basically, it has allowed
    me to dream much bigger,
  • 2:29 - 2:31
and not only dream much bigger,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
but also realize that those dreams
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    are very possible as well.
