Richard Tuttle: Staying Contemporary | ART21 "Exclusive"

  • 0:11 - 0:16
    [Richard Tuttle: Staying Contemporary]
  • 0:30 - 0:32
The show is called "26" because
  • 0:32 - 0:37
I have very consciously created a spinal column
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    of my New York exhibitions.
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    We have a reference--
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    an archival reference--
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    to an artist's development.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
That being said, I'm also very committed
  • 0:59 - 1:03
to the idea of making an art that
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    stays contemporary.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
The actual artwork is a combination
  • 1:12 - 1:16
of the kinds of things that only happen once
  • 1:18 - 1:21
and the kinds of things that happen always.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
Like the piece on the wall right here
  • 1:26 - 1:32
is a piece that's meant to be finished
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    at the time of exhibit.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
But, actually, it's composed of a paper element
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    which was done before.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    But the painting-on-the-wall part
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    had to be made subsequently.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
It captures the kind of experience
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    that cannot be repeated.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
At the time, the general idea of achieving art
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    was to find your image--
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    done over and over again,
  • 2:10 - 2:13
used and used and used until it was exhausted.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
It was so much about coming to the end of things.
  • 2:18 - 2:18
    I was 22.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
I was interested in things beginning.
  • 2:27 - 2:31
I love materials on the one hand,
  • 2:31 - 2:34
and I'm not interested in materials in the other.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    How can somebody love materials
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    to the degree I do
  • 2:39 - 2:42
and be absolutely not interested in materials?
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    And people talk about,
  • 2:43 - 2:46
"Oh, Richard, you know, uses stuff that can
    be thrown away,"
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    and all that.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    But, really what...
  • 2:49 - 2:52
That's my solution for sustaining them,
  • 2:52 - 2:55
because, yeah, I love a piece of tissue paper,
  • 2:55 - 2:57
and I know the world doesn't.
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    There's making art,
  • 3:03 - 3:06
and then there's the art of making art.
  • 3:06 - 3:10
If this, in any way, is directed to the young artist,
  • 3:10 - 3:13
I want to say, you know,
  • 3:13 - 3:17
spend your time thinking about the art of making art.
  • 3:20 - 3:25
Making pictures is a tool for life.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
Life is so much more important than art,
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    but then art's importance
  • 3:32 - 3:35
comes when it's a tool for life--
  • 3:35 - 3:38
you know, when it makes life more available for us.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
I can say, as a person,
  • 3:40 - 3:44
I simply need a good picture.
