A cinematic journey through visual effects
-
0:01 - 0:07The filmmaker Georges Méliès was first a magician.
-
0:07 - 0:14Now movies proved to be the ultimate medium for magic.
-
0:14 - 0:19With complete control of everything the audience can see,
-
0:19 - 0:23moviemakers had developed an arsenal of techniques
-
0:23 - 0:28to further their deceptions.
-
0:28 - 0:33Motion pictures are themselves an illusion of life,
-
0:33 - 0:36produced by the sequential projection of still frames,
-
0:36 - 0:41and they astonished the Lumière brothers' early audiences.
-
0:41 - 0:44Even today's sophisticated moviegoers
-
0:44 - 0:47still lose themselves to the screen,
-
0:47 - 0:51and filmmakers leverage this separation from reality
-
0:51 - 0:53to great effect.
-
0:53 - 0:57Now imaginative people have been having fun with this
-
0:57 - 1:00for over 400 years.
-
1:00 - 1:03Giambattista della Porta, a Neapolitan scholar
-
1:03 - 1:09in the 16th century, examined and studied the natural world
-
1:09 - 1:13and saw how it could be manipulated.
-
1:13 - 1:16Playing with the world, and our perception of it,
-
1:16 - 1:19really is the essence of visual effects.
-
1:19 - 1:21So digging deeper into this
-
1:21 - 1:24with the Science and Technology Council
-
1:24 - 1:27of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
-
1:27 - 1:31reveals some truth behind the trickery.
-
1:31 - 1:37Visual effects are based on the principles of all illusions:
-
1:37 - 1:40assumption, things are as we know them;
-
1:40 - 1:45presumption, things will behave as we expect;
-
1:45 - 1:47and context in reality,
-
1:47 - 1:50our knowledge of the world as we know it,
-
1:50 - 1:51such as scale.
-
1:51 - 1:55Now a fourth factor really becomes an obsession,
-
1:55 - 1:59which is, never betray the illusion.
-
1:59 - 2:03And that last point has made visual effects
-
2:03 - 2:06a constant quest for perfection.
-
2:06 - 2:11So from the hand-cranked jump cut early days of cinema
-
2:11 - 2:16to last Sunday's Oscar winner, what follows are some steps
-
2:16 - 2:21and a few repeats in the evolution of visual effects.
-
2:21 - 2:24I hope you will enjoy.
-
2:24 - 2:29Isabelle: "The filmmaker Georges Méliès
-
2:29 - 2:34was one of the first to realize that
-

-
2:36 - 2:39to capture dreams."

- Don Levy
- Description:
-
It's been 110 years since Georges Méliès sent a spaceship slamming into the eye of the man on the moon. So how far have visual effects come since then? Working closely with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Don Levy takes us on a visual journey through special effects, from the fakery of early technology to the seamless marvels of modern filmmaking.
