Where Do We Go When We Die? | Thich Nhat Hanh, 2022 07 22 (Plum Village, France)
-
0:03 - 0:08Suppose you look up here in the
blackboard... in the whiteboard, -
0:10 - 0:12and this is a candle . . .
-
0:13 - 0:15the candle . . .
-
0:15 - 0:17and the candle
-
0:17 - 0:19is emitting light
-
0:23 - 0:24and heat
-
0:26 - 0:27in many directions.
-
0:40 - 0:43And this candle might take five hours,
-
0:44 - 0:49seven hours to burn to the end, right?
-
0:49 - 0:52And after all the wax is gone,
-
0:57 - 0:59it's like the candle dies.
-
1:00 - 1:03Do you think that the candle
goes somewhere -
1:04 - 1:05after it dies?
-
1:15 - 1:18The candle has something like
five hours to live, -
1:20 - 1:21to burn.
-
1:23 - 1:27And do you think
that after it has burned -
1:28 - 1:29to the end
-
1:29 - 1:31it will go somewhere, or not?
-
1:52 - 1:55And do you think that
this is the end of the candle? -
1:55 - 1:59That this line is the line
of the end of the candle? -
1:59 - 2:01There is a candle
-
2:04 - 2:05from here up here.
-
2:05 - 2:09I agree, you agree,
we all agree -
2:09 - 2:12that from this line up
there is a candle. -
2:13 - 2:16But do you think that
from this line down there is no candle? -
2:19 - 2:20No or yes?
-
2:21 - 2:23[Soft laughter]
-
2:27 - 2:29It seems that if you are
a buddhist, you have to believe -
2:29 - 2:32that there is something after,
-
2:32 - 2:33after you die.
-
2:34 - 2:35And if you are a Christian also,
-
2:35 - 2:38you have to believe
that after you die -
2:39 - 2:40there is something,
-
2:41 - 2:43that you'll go somewhere.
-
2:46 - 2:48In the candle,
in the case of the candle: -
2:50 - 2:52Do you think that
there is something left -
2:52 - 2:55after the candle has
burned itself completely? -
2:56 - 2:58Who says yes?
-
3:01 - 3:03Not too many.
[Laughter] -
3:04 - 3:05Who says no?
-
3:05 - 3:08There is no...
no more candle after. -
3:10 - 3:14Many people are not decided.
[Laughter] -
3:33 - 3:35The Dharma is very deep
-
3:36 - 3:38and lovely.
-
3:39 - 3:40We have to learn to
-
3:41 - 3:45to learn with all our heart
in order to really understand -
3:45 - 3:48the question
"Where shall we go after we die?" -
3:48 - 3:50It's a good question,
-
3:50 - 3:54but without practicing looking
very, very deeply -
3:54 - 3:56we cannot have a good answer.
-
4:05 - 4:07Look at this candle.
-
4:08 - 4:11In this moment,
this is the present moment. -
4:14 - 4:16This line is the present moment.
-
4:17 - 4:19In this present moment,
-
4:19 - 4:23the candle is already going somewhere
-
4:24 - 4:27because in this very moment
-
4:27 - 4:29the candle is sending itself
-
4:29 - 4:34in many directions,
in terms of heat and light. -
4:39 - 4:42So the candle is going
in this very moment. -
4:42 - 4:45It does not need to arrive here
in order to go somewhere. -
4:46 - 4:48You, the same.
You are the same. -
4:49 - 4:52In this very moment,
you are going somewhere. -
4:52 - 4:54There is a
coming and going that is... -
4:54 - 4:58that happens
in every moment of your daily life, -
4:59 - 5:00and you go
-
5:01 - 5:02a little bit like the candle.
-
5:02 - 5:06The candle goes in terms
of light and heat, -
5:07 - 5:10and you go in terms of
-
5:11 - 5:13thought, speech,
-
5:15 - 5:17and physical movement.
-
5:19 - 5:22Three kinds...
three kinds of action. -
5:24 - 5:26Every moment of your daily life
-
5:26 - 5:28you are offering
-
5:28 - 5:31thinking, speaking and acting.
-
5:33 - 5:36And you go in many directions.
-
5:36 - 5:39Speech, you go into your children.
-
5:39 - 5:42Anything you think,
anything you speak, -
5:42 - 5:44anything you act,
you go through your children, -
5:44 - 5:47and through your friends
and through the cosmos. -
5:48 - 5:50That is called karma, action.
-
5:51 - 5:54We are spending ourselves, we are going.
-
5:58 - 6:01I live my daily life in such a way
-
6:02 - 6:06that I can go beautifully into the world,
-
6:07 - 6:09into my disciples,
-
6:09 - 6:11into my friends.
-
6:13 - 6:15I want to think
-
6:17 - 6:18beautiful thoughts.
-
6:19 - 6:21The thoughts of loving kindness,
-
6:21 - 6:24the thoughts of compassion,
-
6:24 - 6:28the thoughts of understanding,
the thoughts of love. -
6:29 - 6:33And every time I have a thought,
I offer myself to you, -
6:33 - 6:35to my disciples,
to my friends and to the world. -
6:36 - 6:39That is ... that is going, that is a
-
6:39 - 6:41That's my continuation.
-
6:47 - 6:51And I don't want to offer
the negative things. -
6:51 - 6:52I want to
-
6:53 - 6:55to transform the negative things
-
6:55 - 6:58so that they become positive before I
-
6:59 - 7:04I go.
Because I go, enter into the cosmos -
7:05 - 7:07and the closest are my friends,
-
7:07 - 7:09my disciples.
-
7:11 - 7:14So when you look
into my disciples, you can see me. -
7:15 - 7:17When you look into
my friends, you can see me. -
7:18 - 7:20And this is very scientific.
-
7:21 - 7:24I continue to go into my disciples,
-
7:25 - 7:27into my friends
and to the cosmos. -
7:27 - 7:29You can see me
-
7:32 - 7:35outside of my body.
-
7:35 - 7:37This is my practice.
-
7:38 - 7:40The candle does the same, you see?
-
7:40 - 7:44The candle is offering light and heat
-
7:45 - 7:47and the light
-
7:47 - 7:49is offered to the world,
-
7:50 - 7:51the heat is offered to the world,
-
7:52 - 7:55but the light and the heat
is offered to the candle by itself. -
7:55 - 7:57The light of the candle can
-
7:57 - 7:59light the candle,
-
7:59 - 8:01and the heat of the candle
-
8:01 - 8:03can cause the
-
8:03 - 8:06the wax to melt.
-
8:06 - 8:08And it's because like that
-
8:08 - 8:11that the wick can absorb the wax
-
8:11 - 8:15so the flame can be powerful.
-
8:16 - 8:17So any action
-
8:18 - 8:20made by the candle
-
8:20 - 8:22affects the world and affects itself.
-
8:25 - 8:29Any action comes out from the candle
-
8:30 - 8:33goes back to the candle also.
-
8:34 - 8:36When you have a
thought of loving kindness, -
8:37 - 8:38the world profits
-
8:38 - 8:41and you profit also.
-
8:41 - 8:43The effect is immediate.
-
8:45 - 8:49When you say something
very nice to another person, -
8:50 - 8:53you offer...
that person receives -
8:53 - 8:55has an effect on that person
-
8:55 - 8:57and you also...
-
8:59 - 9:00you also . . .
-
9:01 - 9:03profit from
-
9:04 - 9:06that loving speech.
-
9:07 - 9:10Any action of you...
of yours -
9:10 - 9:12can affect the world
and affect yourself, -
9:13 - 9:14and some actions,
-
9:14 - 9:16some thoughts,
-
9:16 - 9:18some speech
-
9:18 - 9:21come back to you right away
in this very moment. -
9:22 - 9:24But sometimes
-
9:24 - 9:25a thought
-
9:25 - 9:27or a word
-
9:27 - 9:31would need more time
in order to come back to you. -
9:31 - 9:33You say something not true,
-
9:36 - 9:39that speech affects you right away.
-
9:39 - 9:40Now.
-
9:41 - 9:43But later on it will go back to you.
-
9:45 - 9:47And people will discover that it's a lie.
-
9:47 - 9:49So that goes back to you
-
9:49 - 9:51and you have to
-
9:52 - 9:53to bear
-
9:53 - 9:57to bear the effect of that.
-
9:57 - 9:59There are things that we do now
-
9:59 - 10:02but we have to suffer ten years later
-
10:02 - 10:04or twenty years later.
-
10:05 - 10:07So the karma, it means the...
-
10:08 - 10:09the action
-
10:09 - 10:12can have two kinds of effects:
-
10:12 - 10:14immediate effect,
-
10:14 - 10:16and a . . .
-
10:16 - 10:18retarded effect.
-
10:19 - 10:21It's like some medicines,
-
10:22 - 10:24when you swallow the medicine
-
10:24 - 10:27it will release a substance,
and it has an effect now, -
10:28 - 10:31but later on, it will
continue to affect you. -
10:32 - 10:34So, your thinking,
-
10:34 - 10:37your speech, and your act
-
10:38 - 10:40affect you right away,
-
10:40 - 10:43but later on it will
continue to affect you. -
10:43 - 10:47So, suppose we are in the present moment
-
10:49 - 10:52you do something.
You say something very strong. -
10:52 - 10:54It goes out to the world,
-
10:54 - 10:56it affects the world.
-
10:56 - 10:59And it goes back right in
and affects yourself. -
11:00 - 11:01But some...
-
11:03 - 11:06some actions will
go back to you later on. -
11:07 - 11:09And the candle has to burn until
-
11:10 - 11:13until this line in order to receive the
-
11:14 - 11:16the retribution.
-
11:17 - 11:19In Vietnamese we say
-
11:22 - 11:25[Speaking Vietnamese]
-
11:25 - 11:28The father eats very salty,
-
11:28 - 11:32and the son has to drink a lot of water.
-
11:37 - 11:39So . . .
-
11:39 - 11:41whatever you do,
-
11:41 - 11:43you think and you speak now
-
11:43 - 11:46will have an effect right now
and will have an effect later on. -
11:48 - 11:51And suppose you have...
you do something very strong, -
11:52 - 11:54and you get have the effect
-
11:56 - 11:58here.
-
11:58 - 12:02It will be your son who
will have to get the retribution, -
12:03 - 12:05because your son is your continuation.
-
12:07 - 12:10Your son is the most visible retribution.
-
12:11 - 12:14Your son is the most visible em...
-
12:17 - 12:19continuation of yours.
-
12:20 - 12:21Or your . . .
-
12:24 - 12:25Your daughter.
-
12:25 - 12:27Your daughter is the most. . .
-
12:27 - 12:32one of the most visible
continuation of yours. -
12:33 - 12:35And it's you,
your son is you, -
12:35 - 12:36your daughter is you,
-
12:37 - 12:38your disciple is you,
-
12:38 - 12:40your friend is you,
-
12:40 - 12:43because you have been
going to them every day. -
12:44 - 12:46So I can see
my continuation not only -
12:49 - 12:51in this body, in this consciousness,
-
12:52 - 12:55but I can see my continuation
-
12:55 - 12:59in my disciples, in my friends,
and in the world. -
12:59 - 13:02You see,
I have written a number of books. -
13:03 - 13:06And some of my books go very, very far.
-
13:07 - 13:10And it is affecting
the people who are reading. -
13:12 - 13:16I have offered many wholesome thoughts,
-
13:16 - 13:18many insights in my books.
-
13:18 - 13:21And some of the books
go into prisons, -
13:21 - 13:23into the prisons,
-
13:23 - 13:25and prisoners have been reading
-
13:25 - 13:26and practicing.
-
13:27 - 13:29And I am in prison,
-
13:29 - 13:33because I like to be in prison
in order to be helpful. -
13:34 - 13:38So there are many prisoners
who are my continuation. -
13:39 - 13:41And there are Catholic monks
-
13:41 - 13:42and Catholic nuns
-
13:43 - 13:45who live in cloisters
-
13:45 - 13:47and they have read my book
-
13:47 - 13:50and they have written letters to me.
-
13:52 - 13:56They were able to release some
-
13:58 - 13:59of their views,
-
13:59 - 14:01they feel much lighter
-
14:01 - 14:03and I am continued by them.
-
14:03 - 14:05So I can see me
-
14:07 - 14:10continued in many forms.
-
14:11 - 14:12So when, at this point,
-
14:12 - 14:16when you don't see my body anymore,
you will say that Thay is no longer there. -
14:16 - 14:17That's not true.
-
14:17 - 14:20Thay is there, but you have
to have the eyes of -
14:21 - 14:23eyes of signlessness in order to . . .
-
14:24 - 14:25to recognize him.
-
14:26 - 14:28It's like when...
-
14:31 - 14:34when the cloud has become rain,
-
14:36 - 14:38the cloud is not lost,
-
14:39 - 14:41and you can recognize the cloud
-
14:41 - 14:45in her new form: the rain.
-
14:45 - 14:48So when you don't see
Thay in this form anymore, -
14:49 - 14:51you can recognize Thay's presence,
-
14:51 - 14:53Thay's continuation in other forms,
-
14:53 - 14:56and the most visible is his disciples.
-
14:57 - 15:00Look at the monks, the nuns
and the lay practitioners -
15:00 - 15:01in Plum Village.
-
15:01 - 15:04You can see Thay.
It's not very difficult. -
15:04 - 15:07In the way they walk, the way they smile,
-
15:07 - 15:09the way they cook,
-
15:09 - 15:10the way they sweep the ground,
-
15:10 - 15:13the way they help other people.
-
15:13 - 15:15Well...
-
15:15 - 15:17There is a lot of Thay inside.
-
15:17 - 15:21So the question is...
can be answered like this: -
15:21 - 15:24If you know where
you are going in this moment, -
15:24 - 15:28there will be no difficulty in knowing
where you go after you die. -
15:28 - 15:31You are dying and you are being reborn
-
15:31 - 15:34right here and right now
in this very moment. -
15:34 - 15:37You don't need to arrive
at this point in order to die. -
15:37 - 15:39You are dying in every moment,
-
15:39 - 15:42and you are being reborn in every moment.
-
15:42 - 15:45Not only inside of yourself,
but also outside. -
15:48 - 15:52We know that there are
many cells in the body -
15:53 - 15:57and the cells in our body... many cells
in our body die every moment. -
15:57 - 16:01In this very moment, many cells in our...
in us die -
16:02 - 16:05in order to make room
for other cells to be born. -
16:05 - 16:08So birth and death
happen right here and right now. -
16:09 - 16:13You don't need to arrive
at the age of eighty in order to die. -
16:13 - 16:15You are dying now, in order for
-
16:15 - 16:17for you to reborn now.
-
16:17 - 16:20Birth and death are
happening in every moment. -
16:20 - 16:22That is the teaching of the Buddha
-
16:22 - 16:25and you have to practice
looking deeply in order to see -
16:27 - 16:29to see that.
-
16:29 - 16:32So, when you say "after I die"
-
16:33 - 16:36you mean that now you are not dying.
-
16:36 - 16:39That's not true.
You are dying in this very moment, -
16:39 - 16:42and you are being born
right in this moment. -
16:44 - 16:49Suppose that happens...
that happens in every moment. -
16:50 - 16:54Many thousands, many million cells
-
16:54 - 16:56die in this very moment.
-
16:57 - 17:01Every time someone dies,
we organize funerals, and we cry. -
17:03 - 17:04But if
-
17:06 - 17:09if every time a cell in our body died
-
17:09 - 17:12and if we organize funerals and cry
-
17:12 - 17:15and then we'd have no time to do anything.
[Laughter] -
17:16 - 17:18No time left to do anything at all.
-
17:19 - 17:21Practice looking deeply
in order to see -
17:24 - 17:25to see that.
-
17:26 - 17:29So, when you say "after I die"
-
17:30 - 17:33you mean that now you are not dying.
-
17:33 - 17:36That's not true.
You are dying in this very moment, -
17:36 - 17:39and you are being born
right in this moment. -
17:41 - 17:46Suppose that happens...
that happens in every moment. -
17:46 - 17:51Many thousands, many million cells
-
17:51 - 17:53die in this very moment.
-
17:53 - 17:58Every time someone dies,
we organize funerals, and we cry. -
17:59 - 18:01But if...
-
18:04 - 18:06every time a cell in our body died
-
18:06 - 18:08and if we organize funerals and cry
-
18:09 - 18:12and then we'd have no time
to do anything. [Laughter] -
18:12 - 18:15No time left to do anything at all.
-
18:16 - 18:19We have to accept birth and death
-
18:20 - 18:23that happen in us every moment.
-
18:25 - 18:28So in order to answer this question,
-
18:30 - 18:33you have to practice looking deeply
-
18:34 - 18:35the way the Buddha
-
18:39 - 18:40proposed
-
18:40 - 18:45so that you can see that birth and death
are happening in every moment -
18:46 - 18:49and you are reborn in every moment
-
18:49 - 18:52not only in your body
and your consciousness, -
18:52 - 18:55but in other forms as well.
-
18:59 - 19:01We will continue
-
19:01 - 19:03because this question is so...
-
19:04 - 19:06demands a lot of
-
19:07 - 19:09looking deeply.
-
19:09 - 19:11Ok.
