Where Do We Go When We Die? | Thich Nhat Hanh, 2022 07 22 (Plum Village, France)

  • 0:03 - 0:08
Suppose you look up here in the
    blackboard... in the whiteboard,
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    and this is a candle . . .
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    the candle . . .
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    and the candle
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    is emitting light
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    and heat
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    in many directions.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
And this candle might take five hours,
  • 0:44 - 0:49
seven hours to burn to the end, right?
  • 0:49 - 0:52
And after all the wax is gone,
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    it's like the candle dies.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
Do you think that the candle
    goes somewhere
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    after it dies?
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    The candle has something like
    five hours to live,
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    to burn.
  • 1:23 - 1:27
    And do you think
    that after it has burned
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    to the end
  • 1:29 - 1:31
it will go somewhere, or not?
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    And do you think that
this is the end of the candle?
  • 1:55 - 1:59
That this line is the line
of the end of the candle?
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    There is a candle
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    from here up here.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
    I agree, you agree,
    we all agree
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    that from this line up
    there is a candle.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    But do you think that
from this line down there is no candle?
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    No or yes?
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    [Soft laughter]
  • 2:27 - 2:29
It seems that if you are
a buddhist, you have to believe
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    that there is something after,
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    after you die.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
And if you are a Christian also,
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    you have to believe
    that after you die
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    there is something,
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    that you'll go somewhere.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    In the candle,
in the case of the candle:
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    Do you think that
    there is something left
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    after the candle has
    burned itself completely?
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    Who says yes?
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    Not too many.
    [Laughter]
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    Who says no?
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    There is no...
    no more candle after.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
    Many people are not decided.
    [Laughter]
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    The Dharma is very deep
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    and lovely.
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    We have to learn to
  • 3:41 - 3:45
to learn with all our heart
    in order to really understand
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    the question
"Where shall we go after we die?"
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    It's a good question,
  • 3:50 - 3:54
    but without practicing looking
    very, very deeply
  • 3:54 - 3:56
we cannot have a good answer.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    Look at this candle.
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    In this moment,
    this is the present moment.
  • 4:14 - 4:16
This line is the present moment.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    In this present moment,
  • 4:19 - 4:23
the candle is already going somewhere
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    because in this very moment
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    the candle is sending itself
  • 4:29 - 4:34
    in many directions,
in terms of heat and light.
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    So the candle is going
    in this very moment.
  • 4:42 - 4:45
It does not need to arrive here
    in order to go somewhere.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    You, the same.
    You are the same.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    In this very moment,
    you are going somewhere.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    There is a
    coming and going that is...
  • 4:54 - 4:58
    that happens
in every moment of your daily life,
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    and you go
  • 5:01 - 5:02
a little bit like the candle.
  • 5:02 - 5:06
    The candle goes in terms
    of light and heat,
  • 5:07 - 5:10
and you go in terms of
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    thought, speech,
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    and physical movement.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    Three kinds...
    three kinds of action.
  • 5:24 - 5:26
Every moment of your daily life
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    you are offering
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    thinking, speaking and acting.
  • 5:33 - 5:36
And you go in many directions.
  • 5:36 - 5:39
Speech, you go into your children.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    Anything you think,
    anything you speak,
  • 5:42 - 5:44
    anything you act,
    you go through your children,
  • 5:44 - 5:47
    and through your friends
    and through the cosmos.
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    That is called karma, action.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
We are spending ourselves, we are going.
  • 5:58 - 6:01
I live my daily life in such a way
  • 6:02 - 6:06
that I can go beautifully into the world,
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    into my disciples,
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    into my friends.
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    I want to think
  • 6:17 - 6:18
    beautiful thoughts.
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    The thoughts of loving kindness,
  • 6:21 - 6:24
    the thoughts of compassion,
  • 6:24 - 6:28
    the thoughts of understanding,
    the thoughts of love.
  • 6:29 - 6:33
And every time I have a thought,
    I offer myself to you,
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    to my disciples,
to my friends and to the world.
  • 6:36 - 6:39
That is ... that is going, that is a
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    That's my continuation.
  • 6:47 - 6:51
And I don't want to offer
    the negative things.
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    I want to
  • 6:53 - 6:55
    to transform the negative things
  • 6:55 - 6:58
so that they become positive before I
  • 6:59 - 7:04
    I go.
Because I go, enter into the cosmos
  • 7:05 - 7:07
and the closest are my friends,
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    my disciples.
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    So when you look
into my disciples, you can see me.
  • 7:15 - 7:17
    When you look into
my friends, you can see me.
  • 7:18 - 7:20
    And this is very scientific.
  • 7:21 - 7:24
I continue to go into my disciples,
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    into my friends
    and to the cosmos.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    You can see me
  • 7:32 - 7:35
    outside of my body.
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    This is my practice.
  • 7:38 - 7:40
The candle does the same, you see?
  • 7:40 - 7:44
The candle is offering light and heat
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    and the light
  • 7:47 - 7:49
    is offered to the world,
  • 7:50 - 7:51
the heat is offered to the world,
  • 7:52 - 7:55
but the light and the heat
is offered to the candle by itself.
  • 7:55 - 7:57
The light of the candle can
  • 7:57 - 7:59
    light the candle,
  • 7:59 - 8:01
and the heat of the candle
  • 8:01 - 8:03
    can cause the
  • 8:03 - 8:06
    the wax to melt.
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    And it's because like that
  • 8:08 - 8:11
that the wick can absorb the wax
  • 8:11 - 8:15
so the flame can be powerful.
  • 8:16 - 8:17
    So any action
  • 8:18 - 8:20
    made by the candle
  • 8:20 - 8:22
affects the world and affects itself.
  • 8:25 - 8:29
Any action comes out from the candle
  • 8:30 - 8:33
goes back to the candle also.
  • 8:34 - 8:36
    When you have a
    thought of loving kindness,
  • 8:37 - 8:38
    the world profits
  • 8:38 - 8:41
    and you profit also.
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    The effect is immediate.
  • 8:45 - 8:49
    When you say something
    very nice to another person,
  • 8:50 - 8:53
    you offer...
    that person receives
  • 8:53 - 8:55
has an effect on that person
  • 8:55 - 8:57
    and you also...
  • 8:59 - 9:00
    you also . . .
  • 9:01 - 9:03
    profit from
  • 9:04 - 9:06
    that loving speech.
  • 9:07 - 9:10
    Any action of you...
    of yours
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    can affect the world
    and affect yourself,
  • 9:13 - 9:14
    and some actions,
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    some thoughts,
  • 9:16 - 9:18
    some speech
  • 9:18 - 9:21
come back to you right away
    in this very moment.
  • 9:22 - 9:24
    But sometimes
  • 9:24 - 9:25
    a thought
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    or a word
  • 9:27 - 9:31
    would need more time
in order to come back to you.
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    You say something not true,
  • 9:36 - 9:39
that speech affects you right away.
  • 9:39 - 9:40
    Now.
  • 9:41 - 9:43
But later on it will go back to you.
  • 9:45 - 9:47
And people will discover that it's a lie.
  • 9:47 - 9:49
So that goes back to you
  • 9:49 - 9:51
    and you have to
  • 9:52 - 9:53
    to bear
  • 9:53 - 9:57
to bear the effect of that.
  • 9:57 - 9:59
There are things that we do now
  • 9:59 - 10:02
but we have to suffer ten years later
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    or twenty years later.
  • 10:05 - 10:07
So the karma, it means the...
  • 10:08 - 10:09
    the action
  • 10:09 - 10:12
can have two kinds of effects:
  • 10:12 - 10:14
    immediate effect,
  • 10:14 - 10:16
    and a . . .
  • 10:16 - 10:18
    retarded effect.
  • 10:19 - 10:21
    It's like some medicines,
  • 10:22 - 10:24
    when you swallow the medicine
  • 10:24 - 10:27
    it will release a substance,
and it has an effect now,
  • 10:28 - 10:31
    but later on, it will
    continue to affect you.
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    So, your thinking,
  • 10:34 - 10:37
    your speech, and your act
  • 10:38 - 10:40
    affect you right away,
  • 10:40 - 10:43
    but later on it will
    continue to affect you.
  • 10:43 - 10:47
So, suppose we are in the present moment
  • 10:49 - 10:52
    you do something.
    You say something very strong.
  • 10:52 - 10:54
It goes out to the world,
  • 10:54 - 10:56
    it affects the world.
  • 10:56 - 10:59
And it goes back right in
    and affects yourself.
  • 11:00 - 11:01
    But some...
  • 11:03 - 11:06
    some actions will
go back to you later on.
  • 11:07 - 11:09
And the candle has to burn until
  • 11:10 - 11:13
until this line in order to receive the
  • 11:14 - 11:16
    the retribution.
  • 11:17 - 11:19
    In Vietnamese we say
  • 11:22 - 11:25
    [Speaking Vietnamese]
  • 11:25 - 11:28
    The father eats very salty,
  • 11:28 - 11:32
and the son has to drink a lot of water.
  • 11:37 - 11:39
    So . . .
  • 11:39 - 11:41
    whatever you do,
  • 11:41 - 11:43
you think and you speak now
  • 11:43 - 11:46
will have an effect right now
and will have an effect later on.
  • 11:48 - 11:51
    And suppose you have...
    you do something very strong,
  • 11:52 - 11:54
and you get have the effect
  • 11:56 - 11:58
    here.
  • 11:58 - 12:02
It will be your son who
will have to get the retribution,
  • 12:03 - 12:05
because your son is your continuation.
  • 12:07 - 12:10
Your son is the most visible retribution.
  • 12:11 - 12:14
Your son is the most visible em...
  • 12:17 - 12:19
    continuation of yours.
  • 12:20 - 12:21
    Or your . . .
  • 12:24 - 12:25
    Your daughter.
  • 12:25 - 12:27
Your daughter is the most. . .
  • 12:27 - 12:32
    one of the most visible
    continuation of yours.
  • 12:33 - 12:35
    And it's you,
    your son is you,
  • 12:35 - 12:36
    your daughter is you,
  • 12:37 - 12:38
    your disciple is you,
  • 12:38 - 12:40
    your friend is you,
  • 12:40 - 12:43
    because you have been
    going to them every day.
  • 12:44 - 12:46
    So I can see
    my continuation not only
  • 12:49 - 12:51
in this body, in this consciousness,
  • 12:52 - 12:55
but I can see my continuation
  • 12:55 - 12:59
in my disciples, in my friends,
    and in the world.
  • 12:59 - 13:02
    You see,
I have written a number of books.
  • 13:03 - 13:06
And some of my books go very, very far.
  • 13:07 - 13:10
    And it is affecting
    the people who are reading.
  • 13:12 - 13:16
I have offered many wholesome thoughts,
  • 13:16 - 13:18
    many insights in my books.
  • 13:18 - 13:21
    And some of the books
    go into prisons,
  • 13:21 - 13:23
    into the prisons,
  • 13:23 - 13:25
    and prisoners have been reading
  • 13:25 - 13:26
    and practicing.
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    And I am in prison,
  • 13:29 - 13:33
because I like to be in prison
    in order to be helpful.
  • 13:34 - 13:38
    So there are many prisoners
    who are my continuation.
  • 13:39 - 13:41
    And there are Catholic monks
  • 13:41 - 13:42
    and Catholic nuns
  • 13:43 - 13:45
    who live in cloisters
  • 13:45 - 13:47
and they have read my book
  • 13:47 - 13:50
and they have written letters to me.
  • 13:52 - 13:56
They were able to release some
  • 13:58 - 13:59
    of their views,
  • 13:59 - 14:01
    they feel much lighter
  • 14:01 - 14:03
and I am continued by them.
  • 14:03 - 14:05
    So I can see me
  • 14:07 - 14:10
    continued in many forms.
  • 14:11 - 14:12
    So when, at this point,
  • 14:12 - 14:16
when you don't see my body anymore,
you will say that Thay is no longer there.
  • 14:16 - 14:17
    That's not true.
  • 14:17 - 14:20
Thay is there, but you have
    to have the eyes of
  • 14:21 - 14:23
eyes of signlessness in order to . . .
  • 14:24 - 14:25
    to recognize him.
  • 14:26 - 14:28
    It's like when...
  • 14:31 - 14:34
when the cloud has become rain,
  • 14:36 - 14:38
    the cloud is not lost,
  • 14:39 - 14:41
and you can recognize the cloud
  • 14:41 - 14:45
in her new form: the rain.
  • 14:45 - 14:48
    So when you don't see
    Thay in this form anymore,
  • 14:49 - 14:51
    you can recognize Thay's presence,
  • 14:51 - 14:53
    Thay's continuation in other forms,
  • 14:53 - 14:56
and the most visible is his disciples.
  • 14:57 - 15:00
Look at the monks, the nuns
    and the lay practitioners
  • 15:00 - 15:01
    in Plum Village.
  • 15:01 - 15:04
    You can see Thay.
    It's not very difficult.
  • 15:04 - 15:07
In the way they walk, the way they smile,
  • 15:07 - 15:09
    the way they cook,
  • 15:09 - 15:10
the way they sweep the ground,
  • 15:10 - 15:13
the way they help other people.
  • 15:13 - 15:15
    Well...
  • 15:15 - 15:17
There is a lot of Thay inside.
  • 15:17 - 15:21
    So the question is...
    can be answered like this:
  • 15:21 - 15:24
    If you know where
you are going in this moment,
  • 15:24 - 15:28
there will be no difficulty in knowing
where you go after you die.
  • 15:28 - 15:31
You are dying and you are being reborn
  • 15:31 - 15:34
    right here and right now
    in this very moment.
  • 15:34 - 15:37
    You don't need to arrive
at this point in order to die.
  • 15:37 - 15:39
You are dying in every moment,
  • 15:39 - 15:42
and you are being reborn in every moment.
  • 15:42 - 15:45
    Not only inside of yourself,
    but also outside.
  • 15:48 - 15:52
    We know that there are
    many cells in the body
  • 15:53 - 15:57
and the cells in our body... many cells
in our body die every moment.
  • 15:57 - 16:01
In this very moment, many cells in our...
    in us die
  • 16:02 - 16:05
    in order to make room
for other cells to be born.
  • 16:05 - 16:08
    So birth and death
happen right here and right now.
  • 16:09 - 16:13
    You don't need to arrive
at the age of eighty in order to die.
  • 16:13 - 16:15
You are dying now, in order for
  • 16:15 - 16:17
    for you to reborn now.
  • 16:17 - 16:20
    Birth and death are
    happening in every moment.
  • 16:20 - 16:22
That is the teaching of the Buddha
  • 16:22 - 16:25
    and you have to practice
looking deeply in order to see
  • 16:27 - 16:29
    to see that.
  • 16:29 - 16:32
So, when you say "after I die"
  • 16:33 - 16:36
you mean that now you are not dying.
  • 16:36 - 16:39
    That's not true.
You are dying in this very moment,
  • 16:39 - 16:42
    and you are being born
    right in this moment.
  • 16:44 - 16:49
    Suppose that happens...
    that happens in every moment.
  • 16:50 - 16:54
    Many thousands, many million cells
  • 16:54 - 16:56
    die in this very moment.
  • 16:57 - 17:01
    Every time someone dies,
we organize funerals, and we cry.
  • 17:03 - 17:04
    But if
  • 17:06 - 17:09
if every time a cell in our body died
  • 17:09 - 17:12
and if we organize funerals and cry
  • 17:12 - 17:15
and then we'd have no time to do anything.
    [Laughter]
  • 17:16 - 17:18
No time left to do anything at all.
  • 17:19 - 17:21
    Practice looking deeply
    in order to see
  • 17:24 - 17:25
    to see that.
  • 17:26 - 17:29
So, when you say "after I die"
  • 17:30 - 17:33
you mean that now you are not dying.
  • 17:33 - 17:36
    That's not true.
You are dying in this very moment,
  • 17:36 - 17:39
    and you are being born
    right in this moment.
  • 17:41 - 17:46
    Suppose that happens...
    that happens in every moment.
  • 17:46 - 17:51
    Many thousands, many million cells
  • 17:51 - 17:53
    die in this very moment.
  • 17:53 - 17:58
    Every time someone dies,
we organize funerals, and we cry.
  • 17:59 - 18:01
    But if...
  • 18:04 - 18:06
every time a cell in our body died
  • 18:06 - 18:08
and if we organize funerals and cry
  • 18:09 - 18:12
and then we'd have no time
    to do anything. [Laughter]
  • 18:12 - 18:15
No time left to do anything at all.
  • 18:16 - 18:19
We have to accept birth and death
  • 18:20 - 18:23
that happen in us every moment.
  • 18:25 - 18:28
So in order to answer this question,
  • 18:30 - 18:33
you have to practice looking deeply
  • 18:34 - 18:35
    the way the Buddha
  • 18:39 - 18:40
    proposed
  • 18:40 - 18:45
so that you can see that birth and death
    are happening in every moment
  • 18:46 - 18:49
and you are reborn in every moment
  • 18:49 - 18:52
    not only in your body
    and your consciousness,
  • 18:52 - 18:55
but in other forms as well.
  • 18:59 - 19:01
    We will continue
  • 19:01 - 19:03
    because this question is so...
  • 19:04 - 19:06
    demands a lot of
  • 19:07 - 19:09
    looking deeply.
  • 19:09 - 19:11
    Ok.
