The Gold Turned to Sand

  • 0:00 - 0:02
... In the gold mines of California
  • 0:05 - 0:08
But a hard life awaited Arvid and Robert
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    What gold they found
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    They exchanged for counterfeit bills
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    During their travels Arvid died
  • 0:19 - 0:22
And after four years Robert returned
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    A broken man
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    He came with me
  • 0:28 - 0:33
When I set out that spring
  • 0:33 - 0:36
Like a dog at my heels
  • 0:36 - 0:40
    Close to me he'd cling
  • 0:41 - 0:46
I was glad for his friendship
  • 0:46 - 0:49
As I sought the promised land
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    But Kristina
  • 0:52 - 0:56
The gold has turned to sand
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    We toiled hard
  • 0:59 - 1:03
Gave up comforts we had known
  • 1:04 - 1:08
    Often crying, he begged
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    "Please take me home!"
  • 1:12 - 1:15
But each time I refused him
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    Though unsure of my command
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    Oh Kristina
  • 1:22 - 1:27
The gold has turned to sand
  • 1:28 - 1:32
He, who stood by my side
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    He trusted my word
  • 1:34 - 1:39
    Though I even then
  • 1:39 - 1:43
Saw the path that we walked
  • 1:43 - 1:49
Would never lead us home again
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    Across the prairie
  • 1:54 - 1:58
    We reached the desert ground
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    We lost our way
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    And the spirits gathered round
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    The water keeps purling
  • 2:11 - 2:15
When your head burns like a brand
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    Oh Kristina
  • 2:17 - 2:23
The gold has turned to sand
  • 2:24 - 2:29
I, who should've stood by his side
  • 2:29 - 2:38
I took him over land and wave
  • 2:38 - 2:43
    Desert winds have laid
  • 2:43 - 2:50
A blanket over his silent grave
  • 3:02 - 3:07
    From a rancid well
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    He drank the water drawn
  • 3:10 - 3:17
He fell ill and left me before the dawn
  • 3:18 - 3:22
    As his eyes slowly faded
  • 3:22 - 3:26
The watch fell from his hand
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    Oh, Kristina
  • 3:29 - 3:34
The gold has turned to sand
  • 3:34 - 3:39
    Oh, Kristina
  • 3:39 - 3:59
The gold has turned to sand
Title:
The Gold Turned to Sand
Description:

Between 1860 and 1930, nearly 20 percent of Sweden's population emigrated to America, driven by hardships at home and dreams of a promised land.

Their stories were captured in a celebrated series of novels, later adapted into a powerful musical by the creators of ABBA, who also gave us Chess and Mamma Mia!. Sadly, this musical never really survived its translation into English, so the international audience is robbed of one of the greatest musicals ever made.

My favorite song from it is called "Guldet blev till sand" ("The Gold has Turned to Sand"), and I'm quite obsessed with it! It's haunting and beautiful both in performance (perhaps the greatest I've ever heard) and lyrics, and it's only made more so by the backstory which I am about to share.

As a challenge to myself, and to further my command of the English language, I took it upon myself to craft my own English translation of the song. I wanted to capture its meaning as exactly as could be done, and also retain the poetic rhythm and rhyme. I've used the closest words I could find to the original ones.

Now for the backstory, which you need to hear to enjoy the song as much as I do.

The character who is singing is called Robert, and he's one of the emigrants from Sweden who didn't just settle in America but ventured even further west, all the way to California in pursuit of gold. Accompanying him was Arvid, the younger brother of Kristina, a central character in the story. Arvid was younger and more naive, and looked up to Robert, who took him under his wing. Kristina was very worried when they left but Robert assured her that everything would be fine.

Years later, Robert returns home, a broken man. Arvid is nowhere to be found. Robert remains silent despite the desperate pleas from Kristina and her husband for answers. Then, one day, Kristina notices a watch in Robert's possession, one that belonged to Arvid. Confronted, Robert breaks his silence at last. His heartbreaking confession to Kristina unfolds in this unforgettable song. And do remember that watch as you listen to it...
