JACOB BRONOWSKI - The Ascent of Man
-
0:00 - 0:03Man is a singular creature.
-
0:03 - 0:09He has a set of gifts that make him unique among the animals:
-
0:09 - 0:14so that, unlike them, he is not a figure in the landscape
-
0:14 - 0:18- he is the shaper of the landscape.
-
0:24 - 0:29Every landscape in the world is full of exact and beautiful adaptations,
-
0:29 - 0:36by which an animal fits into its environment like one cog-wheel into another.
-
0:36 - 0:42But nature - that is, evolution - has not fitted man to any specific environment.
-
0:42 - 0:47On the contrary, he has a rather crude survival kit;
-
0:47 - 0:56and yet - this is the paradox of the human condition - one that fits him to all environments.
-
0:57 - 1:04His imagination, his reason, his emotional subtlety and toughness,
-
1:04 - 1:11make it possible for him not to accept the environment but to change it.
-
1:11 - 1:19And that series of inventions, by which man from age to age has remade his environment,
-
1:19 - 1:27is a different kind of evolution - not biological, but cultural evolution.
-
1:27 - 1:35I call that brilliant sequence of cultural peaks "The Ascent of Man".
-
1:39 - 1:49In these paintings the hunter was made familiar with dangers which he knew he had to face but to which he had not yet come.
-
1:50 - 1:53When the hunter was brought here into the secret dark
-
1:53 - 1:57and the light was suddenly flashed on the pictures,
-
1:57 - 2:02he saw the bison as he would have to face him.
-
2:02 - 2:05The moment of fear was made present to him;
-
2:05 - 2:16his spear-arm flexed with an experience which he would have and which he needed not to be afraid of.
-
2:16 - 2:25I think that the power that we see expressed here for the first time is the power of the foward-looking imagination.
-
2:25 - 2:33The imagination is a telescope in time, we are looking back at the experience of the past.
-
2:34 - 2:41The men who made these paintings, the men who were present, looked through that telescope forward.
-
2:42 - 2:46They looked along the ascent of man
-
2:46 - 2:56because what we call cultural evolution is essentially a constant growing and widening of the human imagination.
-
2:59 - 3:06The men who made the weapons and the men who made the paintings were doing the same thing
-
3:09 - 3:20- anticipating a future as only man can do, inferring what is to come from what is here.
-
3:22 - 3:33All over these caves the print of the hand says that: 'This is my mark. This is man.'
-
4:11 - 4:18We are all afraid - for our confidence, for the future, for the world.
-
4:18 - 4:21That is the nature of the human imagination.
-
4:22 - 4:35Yet every man, every civilization, has gone forward because of its engagement with what it has set itself to do.
-
4:37 - 4:41The personal commitment of a man to his skill,
-
4:41 - 4:49the intellectual commitment and the emotional commitment working together as one,
-
4:50 - 4:53has made the Ascent of Man.
-
5:31 - 5:35Man is unique not because he does science,
-
5:35 - 5:38and his is unique not because he does art,
-
5:38 - 5:46but because science and art equally are expressions of his marvelous plasticity of mind.
