Make your dreams a reality | Rasandeep Sagoo | TEDxYouth@Hounslow

  • 0:07 - 0:08
    Please raise your hand
  • 0:08 - 0:13
    if you have ever dreamed
    of becoming a famous footballer.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    OK, not that many footballers
    in the house.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    Please raise your hand
  • 0:20 - 0:25
    if you have ever dreamed
    of becoming a famous politician.
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    OK.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    Please raise your hand
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    if you have ever dreamed
    of being a professional musician.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
We have musicians in the house.
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    Keep your hands raised
if you are a professional musician.
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    Very nice.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
So, what we did just there
    is the perfect example
  • 0:43 - 0:48
to illustrate how each and every one of us
    has or has had dreams.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    No matter how diverse
    and different they are,
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    they are really important
to how we live our lives.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
So in order to make anything a reality,
  • 0:56 - 0:59
you have to dream about it first.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    The best things in life
    stem from ideas, right?
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    Humans have evolved
    into such an intelligent species
  • 1:05 - 1:10
that we can manifest these ideas
    and create something amazing.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    In order to succeed,
    you need to assess things
  • 1:12 - 1:16
    using your own unique perspective.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    Think about things that are
    suited to you, personal, individual.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
Think about your dreams as a kid.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
I spoke to some of my friends,
    and I got responses like:
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    "When I was six,
I wanted to be a dragon tamer."
  • 1:29 - 1:31
Think about what makes you tick,
  • 1:31 - 1:36
based your dreams on something you love,
something that you are interested in.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
So hopes and dreams can be
absolutely anything you want them to be.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    They don't have to be conventional;
  • 1:41 - 1:44
don't limit them to solely careers or jobs
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    but just remember
that if they are steered that way,
  • 1:47 - 1:50
in ten years time, you might be in a job
that does not even exist yet,
  • 1:50 - 1:55
    but it exercises every aspect
of the dream that you're dreaming today.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    Opportunities are like diamonds:
take them when they are given to you
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    because they help shape
    and inspire new dreams
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    or they can develop
    the dreams you have already.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
    One of my favorite quotes
    from Walt Disney:
  • 2:09 - 2:13
"All our dreams can come true
if we have the courage to pursue them."
  • 2:13 - 2:17
Now there is something very exhilarating
about having a dream so big,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
that scares you a little bit.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    It gives you drive, ambition,
    and it gives you motivation,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    something amazing
    that you can work towards
  • 2:25 - 2:27
and the journey itself is so rewarding.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
The key to starting your journey
    is to visualize success.
  • 2:30 - 2:35
It's easy to work towards something
if you can see yourself achieving it.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    For this, you need passion.
    Lack of passion is fatal.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    If you are passionate enough
to dream in the first place,
  • 2:42 - 2:46
it's essential to channel that power
    and that enthusiasm
  • 2:46 - 2:48
into making your dreams a reality.
  • 2:48 - 2:53
    Another one of my quotes
    by Eleanor Roosevelt is that:
  • 2:53 - 2:57
"The future belongs to those who believe
in the beauty of their dreams."
  • 2:57 - 3:00
We are the children of today,
    the leaders of tomorrow,
  • 3:00 - 3:04
and every single one of us
    is powerful and strong enough
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    to pursue our dreams.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
The results are usually very rewarding,
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    but you must remember
that every coin has two sides.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
Don't ever let failure hold you back.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
I am just being honest now
    when I say that sometimes,
  • 3:18 - 3:21
failure is going to hit you,
and it will hit you really hard.
  • 3:21 - 3:27
and it takes every ounce of strength,
    and determination, and courage,
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    to get right back up,
and look it in the face,
  • 3:29 - 3:32
and smile because you've learnt something,
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    and now you can only
    make yourself better.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
We are all familiar with Freddie Mercury
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    as the lead vocalist
    from the rock band, Queen.
  • 3:40 - 3:45
But what a lot of people don't know
is that this man was born Farrokh Bulsara,
  • 3:45 - 3:49
in a place called Zanzibar, which is now
a part of Tanzania, in Africa.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
He moved to the United Kingdom
    at the age of eight.
  • 3:52 - 3:57
In fact, he studied art in this very venue
    in West Thames College
  • 3:57 - 4:00
and he always used to say to his friends:
  • 4:00 - 4:03
"I am what I am. So what?"
  • 4:03 - 4:05
And I think what his message here is
  • 4:05 - 4:10
no matter what background you come from,
no matter what your roots are,
  • 4:10 - 4:15
you have potential, so long as you work,
and you put the hard work in.
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    From my own observations,
  • 4:16 - 4:20
I have seen that our current generation
    seem to be absolutely terrified
  • 4:20 - 4:24
at the prospect of being judged
for who they are and who they want to be.
  • 4:24 - 4:27
There is so much pressure from society
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    to strive for this unrealistic
    idea of perfection.
  • 4:30 - 4:35
In the words of Lock, Stock, and Barrel
rise above it and stay true to yourself.
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    You owe yourself that much
    to refuse to be confined
  • 4:38 - 4:42
    to these restrictions
    of flawed societal perceptions.
  • 4:44 - 4:46
    If not now, then when?
  • 4:46 - 4:49
    Tomorrow? Tomorrow never comes.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
Next week? You said that last week.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
Might make it my New Year's resolution.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
How's that working out? Start now.
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    Now, this got me thinking
about some of my own dreams.
  • 5:01 - 5:05
I am a very keen musician.
I sing and play the piano.
  • 5:05 - 5:10
It's my dream to pursue my passion
    in music in the future.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
I'm currently studying A level music.
  • 5:12 - 5:15
    I am the only student
in my academy who is doing so.
  • 5:15 - 5:18
I had to fight for that class of one.
  • 5:18 - 5:21
I'd like to see myself one day
    performing somewhere really prestigious
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    like the Royal Albert Hall,
    or even globally,
  • 5:24 - 5:26
and this is just a step to getting there.
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    That leads very nicely
    onto my next point.
  • 5:30 - 5:34
    So, the quote behind me
    primarily tells us to work.
  • 5:34 - 5:37
"Take small steps if you have to.
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    If following your dreams entails
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    making small realistic goals
    each day, do it.
  • 5:42 - 5:45
If you can't run, then walk.
  • 5:45 - 5:48
If you can't walk, then crawl.
  • 5:48 - 5:52
But, by all means, keep moving forward
    and never ever give up."
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    Aim high.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
In the words of Les Brown,
    "Shoot for the Moon.
  • 5:56 - 6:00
    Even if you miss,
    you'll land among the stars."
  • 6:01 - 6:03
Today, I leave you with this message.
  • 6:04 - 6:10
"Never be afraid to follow your dreams.
Taste them, conquer them, own them.
  • 6:10 - 6:16
    believe them, achieve them,
and let nothing hold you back."
  • 6:16 - 6:20
    There is such wonder
    and fascination in our dreams,
  • 6:20 - 6:24
and I wish each and every one of you
    with all of my heart
  • 6:24 - 6:27
    that you and your beautiful
    dreams come true.
  • 6:27 - 6:28
    Thank you.
  • 6:28 - 6:30
    (Applause)
