Atrium's Ocean Chest Drain Setup and Operation Part 2

  • 0:00 - 0:07
Let's review these instructions and actually see how
fast and efficient, Atrium's Ocean chest drains are to
  • 0:07 - 0:13
set up and use. First, remove the CSR wrapped unit
from the outer bag. Carefully open the CSR wrap
  • 0:13 - 0:19
using sterile technique and enter the unit into the
sterile field. Each unit comes equipped with a large,
  • 0:19 - 0:26
easy to grip handle that makes hand-off and patient
transport easier and safer than ever before.
  • 0:26 - 0:31
The sturdy, swing-out floor stand should be opened for
set-up convenience and for placement onto the floor.
  • 0:31 - 0:38
To begin, fill the water seal with sterile water or sterile
saline by the pre-attached, pre-measured funnel,
  • 0:38 - 0:45
by holding the funnel downward and filling it to the
top, as shown. By raising the funnel, water will quickly
  • 0:45 - 0:53
empty into the drain and fill the water seal to the
required 2cm level, indicated by the dotted, "fill to" line.
  • 0:53 - 0:59
Remove the funnel and discard after use. Next,
connect the chest drain to the patient by inserting the
  • 0:59 - 1:06
patient tube connector directly into the thoracic
catheter. The patient is now on "gravity drainage or
  • 1:06 - 1:13
"to water seal." To apply suction when prescribed by a
physician, the suction control chamber can be filled to
  • 1:13 - 1:19
the desired pressure level simply by removing the
tethered vent plug, pouring water to the desired
  • 1:19 - 1:24
    suction control pressure level,
    and replacing the vent plug.
  • 1:27 - 1:33
As with any chest drainage system, the drain must be
placed below the level of the patient's chest and kept
  • 1:33 - 1:39
in an upright position to maximize drainage
efficiency. We recommend hanging the unit bedside,
  • 1:39 - 1:45
using the multi-position hangers provided. The
    integrated flexi-hangers accommodate today's newer
  • 1:45 - 1:50
bed designs and allow single-hand placement and
transport. When you're ready to initiate suction,
  • 1:50 - 1:57
connect the suction source to the chest drain suction
connector, or suction control stopcock, and slowly
  • 1:57 - 2:04
increase suction at the suction source until constant,
gentle bubbling occurs in the suction control chamber.
  • 2:04 - 2:11
Available on most Atrium Ocean models is a patented
suction control stopcock which provides simple and
  • 2:11 - 2:17
effective control of vacuum to the drain for more
efficient system operation, with less bubbling noise
  • 2:17 - 2:24
and less evaporation. Simple to use and operate,
Atrium's Suction Control Stopcock can be adjusted as
  • 2:24 - 2:30
necessary to increase or decrease suction control
bubbling. When applying wall suction without a wall
  • 2:30 - 2:37
regulator, simply turn the stopcock to the off
position prior to connecting to the suction source.
  • 2:37 - 2:43
Once connected, use the suction control stopcock to
slowly increase suction until you obtain a constant
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    level of gentle bubbling in
    the suction control chamber.
