Speakout Upper Intermediate Video Podcast Unit 1 Beginnings

  • 0:13 - 0:17
Hi my name is Pasha, I work for the BBC as a producer
  • 0:17 - 0:19

and I do a lot of deejaying in my spare time.
  • 0:19 - 0:23

I’ve lived in London for many years now, with my friends
  • 0:23 - 0:26

and sometimes I annoy them with my music.
  • 0:26 - 0:28

    What about you?
  • 0:28 - 0:29

Do you have any annoying habits?
  • 0:29 - 0:33

I bite my nails and probably talk a bit too loudly.
  • 0:33 - 0:36

I’m really bad at making decisions,
  • 0:36 - 0:38

that’s one of my annoying habits.
  • 0:38 - 0:44

Yes, basically taking off clothes when I’m getting changed and leaving them
  • 0:44 - 0:45

    exactly where I am,
  • 0:45 - 0:47

and not putting them where they should be.
  • 0:47 - 0:51

I’m very messy, which is quite annoying,
  • 0:51 - 0:53

I think, for my boyfriend, anyway.
  • 0:53 - 0:57

Yes, I do. I’m told that I snore when I’m in bed.
  • 0:57 - 1:04

I really have to say bobbling around the topic sometimes because I think out loud,
  • 1:04 - 1:06

    so you know,
taking a long time to get to the point about something,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    I think would be annoying.
  • 1:08 - 1:16

Not that I know of, probably, talking too much.
  • 1:18 - 1:21

Do you have any experience of flat-sharing?
  • 1:21 - 1:25

Absolutely, as a student I shared a flat quite a lot, and
  • 1:26 - 1:31
just different people have different ways of doing things.
  • 1:31 - 1:33

I’m someone who likes to keep things clean and tidy
  • 1:33 - 1:35

and I guess a lot of students,
  • 1:35 - 1:37

are just not fussed about that.
  • 1:37 - 1:38

    I’ve always lived with friends
  • 1:38 - 1:40

so I've always got on well
  • 1:40 - 1:42

and had a really nice experience
  • 1:42 - 1:44

I’ve had some experience of flat-sharing,
  • 1:44 - 1:45

    about three years ago,
  • 1:45 - 1:47

with people who were basically very untidy.
  • 1:47 - 1:54

Their habits I kind of could not stand, bad hygiene.
  • 1:54 - 1:57

Yes, when I was a student,
  • 1:57 - 2:00

two of my flat-mates decided to learn the bongos,
  • 2:00 - 2:02

    that was really annoying.
  • 2:02 - 2:08

Yes, when I was a student I shared with 5 different people. One of them was very noisy.
  • 2:08 - 2:10

And they would play music early in the morning
  • 2:10 - 2:12

when I was trying to sleep.
  • 2:12 - 2:15

So in return I would play music late at night
  • 2:15 - 2:16

when they were trying to sleep,
  • 2:16 - 2:19

just to get my own back.
  • 2:20 - 2:24

What habits or qualities in a flatmate would you find most annoying?
  • 2:24 - 2:30

I think if they were messy then that would be very annoying. And also maybe if
  • 2:30 - 2:31

they were a bit too loud
  • 2:31 - 2:33

and came back partying late at night.
  • 2:33 - 2:34

I think that would be hard.
  • 2:34 - 2:38

Smoking, smoking would be definitely up there.
  • 2:38 - 2:40

    I can’t stand smokers.
  • 2:40 - 2:42

And I can’t stand people that sort of leave their washing up.
  • 2:42 - 2:47

Well, I wouldn’t like to live with me, because I’m really messy, so if there was
  • 2:47 - 2:51

two of us sharing a flat that were messy like that it’d just be impossible.
  • 2:51 - 2:55

Filth. Someone, who you know, someone who’s untidy,
  • 2:55 - 2:57

who’s there to give that impact on you.
  • 2:57 - 2:59

Everything else is really not a big deal,
  • 2:59 - 3:01

    but when you’re flat sharing,
  • 3:01 - 3:03

    definitely tidiness is very important,
  • 3:04 - 3:06

    Not tidying up after themselves,
  • 3:06 - 3:11

leaving a mess after cooking, that sort of stuff.
  • 3:11 - 3:13

I think people that are untidy.
  • 3:13 - 3:16

In particular, people who don’t do the dishes,
  • 3:16 - 3:18

    they’ve cooked a meal,
  • 3:18 - 3:19

and leave them in the sink, and don’t clear them up.
  • 3:19 - 3:21

I find that annoying for I like tidy people.
  • 3:22 - 3:25

    I believe if I had a flatmate
  • 3:25 - 3:28

that was insensitive to my lifestyle needs
  • 3:28 - 3:31

and didn’t compromise in any capacity,
  • 3:31 - 3:35

I’d think they were very selfish.
