A climate change solution that's right under our feet

  • Not Synced
So one of the most important solutions
  • Not Synced
    to the global challenge
    posed by climate change
  • Not Synced
lies right under our foot every day.
  • Not Synced
    It's soil.
  • Not Synced
Soil's just the thin veil that covers
    the surface of land,
  • Not Synced
but it has the power to shape
    our planet's destiny.
  • Not Synced
See, a six foot or so of soil
  • Not Synced
    lose soil material that covers
    the Earth's surface
  • Not Synced
    represents the difference between life
and lifelessness in the Earth system,
  • Not Synced
and it can also help us
    combat climate change
  • Not Synced
and if we can only stop
    treating it like dirt.
  • Not Synced
    Climate change is happening,
  • Not Synced
    the Earth's atmosphere is warming,
  • Not Synced
    because of an increasing amount
    of greenhouse gases
  • Not Synced
we keep releasing into the atmosphere.
  • Not Synced
    You all know that.
  • Not Synced
But what I assume you might not have heard
  • Not Synced
is that one of the most important things
    our human society could do
  • Not Synced
    to address climate change
  • Not Synced
lies right there in the soil.
  • Not Synced
I'm a soil scientist who has
been studying soil since I was 18
  • Not Synced
    because I'm interested in unlocking
    the secrets of soil
  • Not Synced
    and helping people understand this
    really important climate change solution.
  • Not Synced
So here are the facts about climate.
  • Not Synced
    The concentration of carbon dioxide
    in the Earth's atmosphere
  • Not Synced
    has increased by 40 percent
  • Not Synced
just in the last 150 years or so.
  • Not Synced
    Human actions are now releasing
9.4 billion metric tons of carbon
  • Not Synced
    into the atmosphere
  • Not Synced
    from activities such as
    burning fossil fuels
  • Not Synced
    and intensive agricultural practices
  • Not Synced
    and other ways we change
    the way we use land,
  • Not Synced
    including deforestation.
