Why should you read sci-fi superstar Octavia E. Butler? - Ayana Jamieson and Moya Bailey
-
0:08 - 0:10Following a devastating nuclear war,
-
0:10 - 0:15Lilith Iyapo awakens
after 250 years of stasis -
0:15 - 0:19to find herself surrounded by a group
of aliens called the Oankali. -
0:19 - 0:22These highly evolved beings
want to trade DNA -
0:22 - 0:23by breeding with humans
-
0:23 - 0:28so that each species’ genes
can diversify and fortify the other. -
0:28 - 0:32The only alternative they offer is
sterilization of the entire human race. -
0:32 - 0:35Should humanity take the leap into
the biological unknown, -
0:35 - 0:38or hold on to its identity and perish?
-
0:38 - 0:41Questions like this haunt
Octavia Butler’s "Dawn," -
0:41 - 0:44the first in her trilogy "Lilith’s Brood."
-
0:44 - 0:47A visionary storyteller who
upended science fiction, -
0:47 - 0:50Butler built stunning worlds
throughout her work– -
0:50 - 0:53and explored dilemmas that keep
us awake at night. -
0:53 - 0:55Born in 1947,
-
0:55 - 0:59Butler grew up shy and introverted in
Pasadena, California. -
0:59 - 1:01She dreamt up stories from an early age,
-
1:01 - 1:04and was soon scribbling these
scenarios on paper. -
1:04 - 1:07At twelve, she begged her mother
for a typewriter -
1:07 - 1:12after enduring a campy science fiction
film called "Devil Girl From Mars." -
1:12 - 1:14Unimpressed with what she saw,
-
1:14 - 1:17Butler knew she could tell a better story.
-
1:17 - 1:19Much science fiction features
white male heroes -
1:19 - 1:23who blast aliens or become
saviors of brown people. -
1:23 - 1:27Butler wanted to write diverse characters
for diverse audiences. -
1:27 - 1:31She brought nuance and depth to the
representation of their experiences. -
1:31 - 1:32For Butler,
-
1:32 - 1:36imagination was not only for planting
the seeds of science fiction– -
1:36 - 1:41but also a strategy for surviving an
unjust world on one’s own terms. -
1:41 - 1:43Her work often takes troubling
features of the world -
1:43 - 1:48such as discrimination on the basis of
race, gender, class, or ability, -
1:48 - 1:52and invites the reader to contemplate
them in new contexts. -
1:52 - 1:54One of her most beloved novels,
-
1:54 - 1:55the "Parable of the Sower,"
-
1:55 - 1:57follows this pattern.
-
1:57 - 2:00It tells the story of Lauren Oya Olamina
-
2:00 - 2:04as she makes her way through a near-future
California, ruined by corporate greed, -
2:04 - 2:07inequality, and environmental destruction.
-
2:07 - 2:09As she struggles with hyperempathy,
-
2:09 - 2:12or a condition in the novel that
causes her to feel others’ pain, -
2:12 - 2:14and less often, their pleasure.
-
2:14 - 2:18Lauren embarks on a quest with a group
of refugees to find a place to thrive. -
2:18 - 2:23There, they seek to live in accordance
with Lauren’s found religion, Earthseed, -
2:23 - 2:25which is based on the principle
-
2:25 - 2:28that humans must adapt to an
ever-changing world. -
2:28 - 2:31Lauren’s quest had roots
in a real life event– -
2:31 - 2:33California Prop 187,
-
2:33 - 2:37which attempted to deny undocumented
immigrants fundamental human rights, -
2:37 - 2:39before it was deemed unconstitutional.
-
2:39 - 2:43Butler frequently incorporated
contemporary news into her writing. -
2:43 - 2:47In her 1998 sequel to "The Parable of the
Sower," "Parable of the Talents," -
2:47 - 2:49she wrote of a presidential candidate
-
2:49 - 2:54who controls Americans with virtual
reality and “shock collars.” -
2:54 - 2:56His slogan? “Make America great again.”
-
2:56 - 2:58While people have noted her prescience,
-
2:58 - 3:02Butler was also interested in
re-examining history. -
3:02 - 3:04For instance,
"Kindred" tells the story of -
3:04 - 3:06a woman who is repeatedly
pulled back in time -
3:06 - 3:09to the Maryland plantation
of her ancestors. -
3:09 - 3:14Early on, she learns that her mission
is to save the life of the white man -
3:14 - 3:16who will rape her great grandmother.
-
3:16 - 3:20If she doesn’t save him,
she herself will cease to exist. -
3:20 - 3:23This grim dilemma forces Dana to
confront the ongoing trauma -
3:23 - 3:27of slavery and sexual violence
against Black women. -
3:27 - 3:29With her stories of women
founding new societies, -
3:29 - 3:32time travelers overcoming
historical strife, -
3:32 - 3:34and interspecies bonding,
-
3:34 - 3:39Butler had a profound influence on
the growing popularity of Afrofuturism. -
3:39 - 3:40That’s a cultural movement
-
3:40 - 3:45where Black writers and artists who are
inspired by the past, present and future, -
3:45 - 3:50produce works that incorporate magic,
history, technology and much more. -
3:50 - 3:53As Lauren comes to learn in
"Parable of the Sower," -
3:53 - 3:55"All that you touch you Change.
-
3:55 - 3:58All that you Change Changes you.
-
3:58 - 4:01The only lasting truth is Change.”
