Sarcophagus of Junius Bassus, marble, 359 C.E.

0:06 - 0:12We're in St Peter's Basilica and we're looking at a famous early Christian sarcophagus.

0:12 - 0:14It's the tomb of Junius Bassus.

0:14 - 0:20Now it's a little complicated because what people generally see is the copy that the Vatican has
-
0:20 - 0:25in their museum but we're in the Treasury and this is the actual sarcophagus.
-
0:25 - 0:31And so Junius Baccus was a Roman prefect in around the mid-fourth century.

0:31 - 0:34Right, we know that he had his position in 359.
-
0:34 - 0:39So we're looking at a very early moment, soon after Constantine has made it
-
0:39 - 0:42legitimate to be a Christian in the Roman Empire
-
0:42 - 0:48and Constantine is in the process of making Christianity or leading towards Christianity becoming the
-
0:48 - 0:52official religion of the Roman Empire which will happen in the end of the 300s.

0:52 - 0:59So this is an early example then of a kind of openness and really magnificenct rendering of
-
0:59 - 1:01the iconography of the Christian tradition.

1:01 - 1:06Right, and what's really interesting is that it doesn't look the way we expect it to, in a way because
-
1:06 - 1:13Christ is here in the center represented with probably Peter and Paul, the two figures on either side of them--
-
1:13 - 1:15It looks likely to be Peter and Paul, yes.
-
1:15 - 1:20But he looks very youthful, like a young philosopher teacher.

1:20 - 1:22He's even holding a scroll in his hand--
-
1:22 - 1:29And he's seated and frontal, though not entirely frontal. So I guess what I'm saying is that things
-
1:29 - 1:34that we normally associate with representations of Christ where he looks like an emperor, he's older
-
1:34 - 1:38and he's got a beard. Here he is represented very youthful,
-
1:38 - 1:44although he's seated and frontal, he does have a kind of naturalism and movement to his body,
-
1:44 - 1:48his left leg comes forward a little bit, his head is slightly turned.

1:48 - 1:52And he's got his foot above an image of a river god
-
1:52 - 1:55Which is interesting because it shows Christianity surmounting the old
-
1:55 - 1:57Polytheistic traditions of ancient Romans--
-
1:57 - 2:05Using the iconography of the ancient Roman, pagan, art in a new Christian context.

2:05 - 2:12I really am interested by the point you made earlier about Christ not fulfilling the physical attributes
-
2:12 - 2:18that we come to expect. And this is so early that in a sense, those traditions hadn't yet developed--
-
2:18 - 2:19Exactly.
-
2:19 - 2:24--they hadn't yet really been constructed and accepted so this is a very flexible moment.
-
2:24 - 2:28Right, this iconography is being developed. And here he looks like pagan figure in a way.
-
2:28 - 2:34That's certainly true because of the classical garb that he wears. And it's interesting stylistically
-
2:34 - 2:39because this sculpture is really showing a pretty highpitched naturalism
-
2:39 - 2:44in terms of the rendering of the bodies, the contrapposto that we see the figures standing in,
-
2:44 - 2:47and even some of the emotional attributes of the figures.
-
2:47 - 2:53There is a kind of naturalism although we see the beginnings of a kind of early Christian style.
-
2:53 - 3:00There are some hints of what's to come. The heads are a little bit too large for the bodies.
-
3:00 - 3:05The bodies are starting to be a little bit on the stubby side.
-
3:05 - 3:07So it's a very interesting transitional moment.
-
3:07 - 3:11We see some other scenes from the bible and we're seeing early expressions of it
-
3:11 - 3:17here but these are ways of representing these scenes that will become very familiar to us.

3:17 - 3:20We have Adam and Eve on the lower register--
-
3:20 - 3:26and also other Old Testament scenes that would've prefigured the events in Christ's life.

3:26 - 3:33So that idea of saying that events in the Old Testament such as the sacrifice of Isaac prefigured
-
3:33 - 3:40Christ's own sacrifice for the salvation of mankind so that way of saying that Christ's life
-
3:40 - 3:45is a fulfillment of the prophecy and the events of the Old Testament.

3:45 - 3:51What we're witnessing here is the invention of a new iconography, the invention of a new visual language
-
3:51 - 3:54for the tellling of these critical stories.

3:54 - 4:00What I'm also noticing is just how deeply carved it is. It is essentially a relief sculpture
-
4:00 - 4:06but the figures are in very, very high relief. Some of them seem to be separate from
-
4:06 - 4:13the marble ground. And I love these columns with capitals and bringing together of the
-
4:13 - 4:15classical and the beginnings of the Christian.
