There's no dishonor in having a disability - Steven Claunch
-
0:09 - 0:10As you can see,
-
0:10 - 0:13I was born without fingers on my right hand.
-
0:13 - 0:16And also my right leg was several inches shorter
-
0:16 - 0:17than my left one.
-
0:17 - 0:20They broke the bones in the leg,
-
0:20 - 0:23then they screwed metal spikes into the bone.
-
0:23 - 0:25It has not only spikes,
-
0:25 - 0:27but wires that go all the way through the leg
-
0:27 - 0:28to stabilize it.
-
0:28 - 0:29I have to walk on it.
-
0:29 - 0:31I have to stretch it out
-
0:31 - 0:34so that my muscles don't just get all atrophied.
-
0:34 - 0:35People always ask me, "Does it hurt?"
-
0:35 - 0:37Yes, it does,
-
0:37 - 0:39but I focus on what I can do,
-
0:39 - 0:40not on what I cannot do.
-
0:40 - 0:42I want to talk with you guys
-
0:42 - 0:44about overcoming obstacles.
-
0:44 - 0:45Everybody has obstacles,
-
0:45 - 0:46a disability,
-
0:46 - 0:47a hurdle.
-
0:47 - 0:49We face a choice:
-
0:49 - 0:51Let the obstacle overcome you
-
0:51 - 0:53or overcome the obstacle.
-
0:53 - 0:55Maybe some of you have heard of Jim Abbott.
-
0:55 - 0:58He was a Major League baseball player.
-
0:58 - 1:00He won a gold metal in the Olympics.
-
1:00 - 1:02He played for the Yankees, the Angels.
-
1:02 - 1:04But he threw a no-hitter,
-
1:04 - 1:06and he only had one arm.
-
1:06 - 1:07When he was a kid,
-
1:07 - 1:10he came home mad one time
-
1:10 - 1:10and told his dad,
-
1:10 - 1:12"The kids won't let me play baseball
-
1:12 - 1:14because I only have one hand."
-
1:14 - 1:15His dad replied,
-
1:15 - 1:17"No, the kids won't let you play baseball
-
1:17 - 1:20because you stink at baseball.
-
1:20 - 1:23You can't change the fact that you only have one hand,
-
1:23 - 1:25but you can change the fact that you stink."
-
1:25 - 1:28So, his dad began to practice with him,
-
1:28 - 1:29and he got good.
-
1:29 - 1:31He overcame obstacles.
-
1:31 - 1:33Teams would try to exploit his weak side.
-
1:33 - 1:35They would try to bunt to the side
-
1:35 - 1:37that he had a missing arm.
-
1:37 - 1:38But they never succeeded
-
1:38 - 1:40because he practiced and practiced
-
1:40 - 1:42fielding bunts to that side.
-
1:42 - 1:45There's no dishonor in having a disability,
-
1:45 - 1:49and I won't let anyone diss my ability,
-
1:49 - 1:51but I don't want anyone's pity either.
-
1:51 - 1:53I will not use the obstacles I face
-
1:53 - 1:56as an excuse for having a pity party.
-
1:56 - 1:58I will practice harder,
-
1:58 - 1:59play harder,
-
1:59 - 2:00and push myself harder
-
2:00 - 2:02to keep getting better.
-
2:02 - 2:03Last season I started
-
2:03 - 2:06on my varsity high school basketball team
-
2:06 - 2:07as a freshman,
-
2:07 - 2:09and I won Rookie of the Year.
-
2:09 - 2:12I was one of the top scorers on the team.
-
2:14 - 2:16One of the things that I find funny
-
2:16 - 2:18is that people judge me by appearance.
-
2:18 - 2:19They say,
-
2:19 - 2:21"Oh, look at this one-handed whitey with the limp.
-
2:21 - 2:24I don't want him on my team!"
-
2:24 - 2:25But what they don't know
-
2:25 - 2:28is that I don't just have a disability,
-
2:28 - 2:30I have an ability.
-
2:30 - 2:32One of my favorite moments from this last season
-
2:32 - 2:34was we played a team
-
2:34 - 2:36that we had never played before.
-
2:36 - 2:38And when the game started,
-
2:38 - 2:40you could tell that they were dissing my disability.
-
2:40 - 2:44I mean, they double-teamed our tallest player.
-
2:44 - 2:47They just were playing really soft on me,
-
2:47 - 2:48and they just,
-
2:48 - 2:49you could tell they thought,
-
2:49 - 2:51"What can this guy with one hand do?"
-
2:51 - 2:53So, they left me open for a three.
-
2:53 - 2:54I made that one.
-
2:54 - 2:55They left me open for another one.
-
2:55 - 2:56I made that one.
-
2:56 - 2:58Then, they started to get frustrated,
-
2:58 - 3:00so they actually fouled me.
-
3:00 - 3:01I made both free throws.
-
3:01 - 3:03And they called time out.
-
3:03 - 3:05And as we were in the huddle,
-
3:05 - 3:07I could hear the other coach
-
3:07 - 3:09yelling at his players about me.
-
3:09 - 3:12They went from not covering me at all
-
3:12 - 3:14to double-teaming me.
-
3:14 - 3:16It's all about overcoming obstacles.
-
3:16 - 3:18It's true, I have a disability,
-
3:18 - 3:19but so do you.
-
3:19 - 3:21I also have an ability,
-
3:21 - 3:22so do you.
-
3:22 - 3:24Everyone has obstacles to overcome.
-
3:24 - 3:26Some are visible like mine.
-
3:26 - 3:28Some are less visible.
-
3:28 - 3:29Maybe your obstacle is
-
3:29 - 3:31that you come from a poor neighborhood.
-
3:31 - 3:34Maybe people say you'll never amount to anything.
-
3:34 - 3:35Prove them wrong.
-
3:35 - 3:38Maybe your obstacle is that you have a learning disability,
-
3:38 - 3:40and people think that you're dumb.
-
3:40 - 3:41Prove them wrong.
-
3:41 - 3:42Maybe people judge you
-
3:42 - 3:44because of the color of your skin
-
3:44 - 3:46or your family background.
-
3:46 - 3:47Prove them wrong.
-
3:47 - 3:49I know a lot of people
-
3:49 - 3:51who take one look at me and judge me.
-
3:51 - 3:51They say,
-
3:51 - 3:54"Oh, that kid can't be any good at basketball.
-
3:54 - 3:55One leg, one hand."
-
3:55 - 3:58If someone things you can't overcome the obstacles,
-
3:58 - 4:00prove them wrong.

When faced with a bump in the road, sometimes we forget we have a choice: overcome the obstacle or let it overcome you. Steven Claunch, who was born without fingers on his right hand and with one leg shorter than the other and has excelled in basketball nonetheless, explains why obstacles can provide an opportunity to both inspire others and develop character.
