Is Jesus Christ the Source of Your Joy? - Jesse Barrington

  • 0:01 - 0:07
I think everyone in here wants joy.
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    I think the answer is
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    because in our practical street-level
  • 0:11 - 0:14
Christian living of our everyday lives
  • 0:14 - 0:18
where we experience suffering and pain,
  • 0:18 - 0:21
we really struggle to see how joy
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    can be truly experienced
  • 0:23 - 0:29
in the midst of sorrow, pain, and anguish.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
And we have begun at times to believe
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    that if we're really going
    to experience true joy,
  • 0:37 - 0:40
it must be at the removal of sorrow,
  • 0:40 - 0:45
    pain, and anguish.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
In v. 23 and 24, Jesus is going
    to teach the disciples
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    a really important theological shift
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    that's going to take place
    in light of the resurrection.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
It will help us see how
    we can approach the Father
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    regarding these things.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
And we need to understand that.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
But because the aim of v. 24
  • 1:07 - 1:09
is that our joy would be full,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    but it's also going to
    teach us another thing,
  • 1:12 - 1:16
    and that is this: what's
    the source of joy.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    What's the source of joy?
  • 1:18 - 1:20
We need to know how we
    need to approach the Father
  • 1:20 - 1:23
if we're going to have this
    joy that's set before us.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
But we need to understand importantly too
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    what's the source of joy.
  • 1:27 - 1:28
And to help us think about that,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
I'm going to go back to
    the illustration again
  • 1:30 - 1:32
and just drive the point home
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    one more time for you.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    In the illustration Jesus gave,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
the woman was in the midst of sorrow -
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    true physical pain -
  • 1:41 - 1:45
and then her sorrow turned into joy.
  • 1:45 - 1:52
    And it wasn't because
    the sorrow was removed.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    It was swallowed up
  • 1:54 - 1:56
in the joy of the baby.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
    In Jesus teaching us how
    to come to the Father
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    after the resurrection,
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    He's going to be teaching
    us the source of joy,
  • 2:05 - 2:06
and let me tell you this,
  • 2:06 - 2:10
the source of joy is not the removal
  • 2:10 - 2:15
    of pain, sorrow, and anguish.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    In this life, you're guaranteed
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    constant pain, sorrow, and anguish,
  • 2:21 - 2:24
yet here Jesus holds out before us
  • 2:24 - 2:31
    eternal joy and fullness thereof.
  • 2:31 - 2:34
I think most of us are getting this wrong
  • 2:34 - 2:38
and I'll help you to diagnose
    if you're like me often.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
Regarding your pain, sorrow, and anguish,
  • 2:42 - 2:46
how do you pray about that?
  • 2:46 - 2:49
    If you're like me,
  • 2:49 - 2:54
    most of my prayers regarding
    my pain, sorrow, and anguish
  • 2:54 - 2:59
are: God, I want to have joy,
  • 2:59 - 3:02
so I need You to remove
  • 3:02 - 3:05
the pain, the sorrow, the anguish
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    or the source of it.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
And I spend a lot of my prayer time there.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
I want to be careful here.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    I'm not implying it's wrong
  • 3:15 - 3:18
    to pray for healing
  • 3:18 - 3:20
or for God to remove those things.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
I'm not implying that at all.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
But I think it's really important
  • 3:26 - 3:30
that we see as we look
    through the lens of Scripture
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    the normative means through which
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    God brings joy to us
  • 3:36 - 3:41
    is not the removal of
    pain, sorrow, and anguish,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
it's by giving us joy in the midst
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    of pain, sorrow, and anguish
  • 3:46 - 3:52
    by giving us Jesus.
  • 3:52 - 3:57
    Saints, there's something more - better -
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    than the removal of pain.
  • 3:59 - 4:04
It's Jesus in the midst of pain.
  • 4:04 - 4:06
And we really struggle to see that,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
to believe that because the pain is real,
  • 4:08 - 4:09
but I want you to know this:
  • 4:09 - 4:15
    Jesus is more real.
  • 4:15 - 4:19
    God gets glory by
    removing pain and sorrow.
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    He gets glory by healing,
but I want you to know this,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    God gets even more glory
  • 4:24 - 4:29
when He swallows up pain with joy.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
I mean, tell me what looks better
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    from a world's perspective.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    To see someone who circumstantially
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    has no basis for joy
  • 4:38 - 4:39
    and is in full pain?
  • 4:39 - 4:45
    Yet, they're unexplainably rejoicing?
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    That gives God glory!
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    You know what else it
    forces the world to do?
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    It forces the world to
    come to you and say:
  • 4:52 - 4:54
Hey, what is the source of the hope
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    that is within you?
  • 4:56 - 4:58
Because they can't see the circumstance.
  • 4:58 - 5:00
In fact, they see a circumstance
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    that should lead to grumbling
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    and complaining and whining,
  • 5:04 - 5:07
    yet they're seeing joy.
  • 5:07 - 5:09
And when they ask you that,
    you get to stand up
  • 5:09 - 5:11
and you get to say this:
  • 5:11 - 5:16
Jesus Christ is the source of my joy
  • 5:16 - 5:20
in the midst of my sorrow and pain.
  • 5:20 - 5:26
Saints, God looks good in that scenario.
  • 5:26 - 5:29
