The power of reading | April Qu | TEDxYouth@Suzhou

  • Not Synced
    [Music playing]
  • Not Synced
Good afternoon everybody. I'm a pro. Eight
  • Not Synced
years ago I got the biggest and best
  • Not Synced
present ever of my life. After reading
  • Not Synced
books every night since I was about two,
  • Not Synced
my mom opened a children's book store. I
  • Not Synced
still remember the day I stepped into
  • Not Synced
the warm, lovely place. Sunshine glowing
  • Not Synced
on the bookshelves, and I smelled the
  • Not Synced
scent of books, and I still remember the
  • Not Synced
happy moment my mom held me in her arms
  • Not Synced
and read me a book. In an old house in Paris
  • Not Synced
that was covered with vines lived
  • Not Synced
    twelve little girls
  • Not Synced
in two straight lines. Time passed and
  • Not Synced
I grew from a little kid who was often
  • Not Synced
mistaken for a boy, to a big girl
  • Not Synced
standing in front of you on this stage.
  • Not Synced
However, the love of reading has been
  • Not Synced
kept unchanged, except that I don't suck
  • Not Synced
my fingers anymore while I'm reading.
  • Not Synced
Having the freedom to read and the
  • Not Synced
freedom to choose, is one of the best
  • Not Synced
gifts my mom ever gave me. Also, running a
  • Not Synced
bookstore is not always a good choice
  • Not Synced
    for making money.
  • Not Synced
Mom never regret quitting her high
  • Not Synced
salary job and devoting herself to the
  • Not Synced
small bookstore. She is very proud of her
  • Not Synced
work that brings a passion for reading
  • Not Synced
to me, and other children. Surrounded by
  • Not Synced
books, I am enthusiastic about reading. I
  • Not Synced
    bring a book with me
  • Not Synced
wherever I go. I read in
  • Not Synced
restaurants while I'm waiting for a meal.
  • Not Synced
I read in the Metro on my way to school.
  • Not Synced
I read every night before I go to sleep.
  • Not Synced
To read is it to voyage through time to
  • Not Synced
visit places you will never otherwise
  • Not Synced
know, to experience the world of
  • Not Synced
    imagination, adventure, and discovery. Take
  • Not Synced
Alice in Wonderland as an example. When I
  • Not Synced
read that book, I felt Alice
  • Not Synced
into a Wonderland. It's so weird,
  • Not Synced
so visual. There, rabbits can talk.
  • Not Synced
Playing cards can walk, and cats can
  • Not Synced
vanish at will. After I read that book,
  • Not Synced
my mind kept wanting to return to
  • Not Synced
    Wonderland and experience all those
  • Not Synced
nonsense again. So, I drew this picture. I
  • Not Synced
drew the Cheshire Cat, the caterpillar on
  • Not Synced
the giant mushroom, and the girl. I don't
  • Not Synced
know if the girl is Alice or myself. I was
  • Not Synced
too young when I drew that picture, but I
  • Not Synced
really wish that I could have lived
  • Not Synced
inside that book. So you can see, in the
  • Not Synced
    book, Alice followed
  • Not Synced
a rabbit and tumbled down in
  • Not Synced
Wonderland, whereas in the real world a
  • Not Synced
book can always lead you to escape the
  • Not Synced
boredom of everyday life, and enter a
  • Not Synced
magic world. For example, we can take the
  • Not Synced
Magic School Bus to explore the human
  • Not Synced
body, or we can escape into nature by
  • Not Synced
reading fabrice book of insects. We can
  • Not Synced
even travel back to ancient Greece or
  • Not Synced
Rome in the series of Horrible History.
  • Not Synced
With a book, we can go anywhere and be
  • Not Synced
anything. Really it's also a good way for
  • Not Synced
us to connect with others. It's amazing
  • Not Synced
how when you're reading a book on a train,
  • Not Synced
a stranger next to you says "hey I love
  • Not Synced
that book" - this is a true story between
  • Not Synced
me and Yoyo. We then immediately started a
  • Not Synced
discussion about characters in that book.
  • Not Synced
Yoyo's mom and my mom also found that
  • Not Synced
they had a lot in common.
  • Not Synced
Last year, our families took a trip to
  • Not Synced
    Singapore together. This is our
  • Not Synced
first day in Singapore. We went to a big
  • Not Synced
bookstore and spent half a day there.
  • Not Synced
This is not the only story.
  • Not Synced
We would share fun "Did You Know" books facts
  • Not Synced
with my friends, or help other readers my
  • Not Synced
age find a book that's just right for
  • Not Synced
them. We build up relationships and get
  • Not Synced
to know each other better. Also, I believe
  • Not Synced
that when parents read to their children,
  • Not Synced
it brings back good memories from their
  • Not Synced
own childhood. This is a strong
  • Not Synced
relationship that can get rid of gaps in-
  • Not Synced
    between generations. Another amazing
  • Not Synced
    thing about reading is
  • Not Synced
when you are reading, in a way, you're
  • Not Synced
engaging in a conversation with the author.
  • Not Synced
One of the authors I admire very much is
  • Not Synced
Bill Bryson. He was humorous and witty.
  • Not Synced
When reading his great book, a short
  • Not Synced
story of nearly everything, I feel like
  • Not Synced
I'm accompanying the author as he
  • Not Synced
travels through space and time, from the
  • Not Synced
Big Bang to the rise of civilization. His
  • Not Synced
deep curiosity of the world we live in,
  • Not Synced
and the encyclopedia knowledge of his
  • Not Synced
topics impressed and touched me. Another
  • Not Synced
    beloved author is
  • Not Synced
    Roald Dahl whose hilarious,
  • Not Synced
    breathtaking books are so attractive
  • Not Synced
that I don't even want the story to end. I
  • Not Synced
have read all of his books for children.
  • Not Synced
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The
  • Not Synced
Witches, BFG, and many others. When asked
  • Not Synced
in an interview about how do you get
  • Not Synced
your story ideas, the author answered, "it
  • Not Synced
always starts with a little seed of idea,
  • Not Synced
a little germ. Every time I get a great
  • Not Synced
idea I will pull out a notebook and
  • Not Synced
write it down, or else it would disappear
  • Not Synced
like a dream". These tips helped me a lot
  • Not Synced
when I first started writing. I use my
  • Not Synced
idea notebook to write down my seeds of
  • Not Synced
ideas, and in the story of Memphis, Roald
  • Not Synced
Dahl told us "watch with glittering eyes the
  • Not Synced
whole world around you because the
  • Not Synced
greatest secrets are always hidden in
  • Not Synced
the most unlikely places". I was inspired
  • Not Synced
    when I read this.
  • Not Synced
I'd taken advice not only from a
  • Not Synced
great author, but also from a wise man who
  • Not Synced
had a keen insight into our world. Just
  • Not Synced
like Roald Dahl's character the BFG, Big
  • Not Synced
Friendly Giant, whose job was to collect
  • Not Synced
and blow pleasantries to small children.
  • Not Synced
Roald Dahl, Bill Bryson, Sheldon Ellis
  • Not Synced
Silberstein, Dr. Seuss, and other writers
  • Not Synced
did blow big dreams to me and every
  • Not Synced
other reader. I dream that one day I can
  • Not Synced
make magic of my own as an author for
  • Not Synced
myself, my friends, my kids, and other
  • Not Synced
children. Here, I want to share a poem
  • Not Synced
I wrote on a kite I made in
  • Not Synced
art class. Soaring above us like a bird, is
  • Not Synced
a big, amazing kite, the wind is howling,
  • Not Synced
making it dance what a beautiful sight".
  • Not Synced
Yes what a beautiful sight, but I know
  • Not Synced
making this dream come true will be a
  • Not Synced
very long and slow process. I will keep
  • Not Synced
on reading and writing every day and
  • Not Synced
above all, keep watching with glittering
  • Not Synced
eyes the whole world around me just like
  • Not Synced
Roald Dahl. And there's one thing I know
  • Not Synced
for sure. Reading will be a lifelong love
  • Not Synced
for me. I read because one life
  • Not Synced
is just not enough. Today I stand here to
  • Not Synced
share my reading stories with you because
  • Not Synced
I believe that reading can light up the
  • Not Synced
    whole world.
  • Not Synced
So, why not surround yourself with books.
  • Not Synced
Sit down quietly and enjoy the words, the
  • Not Synced
pictures, and how they fit together so
  • Not Synced
beautifully. At the end of my speech, I
  • Not Synced
would like to recite one of my favorite
  • Not Synced
    poems.
  • Not Synced
No one believes the whole book to ever
  • Not Synced
come from something as simple as
  • Not Synced
butterflies that don't even live that
  • Not Synced
long, but on paper, sayings can live
  • Not Synced
forever, on paper, a butterfly never dies.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
