Opening Event 30C3 - Tim Pritlove

  • 0:11 - 0:14
    Intro Video
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    Greetings my friends.
  • 3:38 - 3:43
We are all interested in the future,
  • 3:43 - 3:51
for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
You are interested in the unknown,
  • 3:56 - 4:00
    the mysterious, the unexplainable
  • 4:00 - 4:05
and this is why you are here.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    And that's why I say:
  • 4:08 - 4:13
Thank you for coming to the 30th Chaos Communication Congress.
  • 4:13 - 4:19
    applause
  • 4:26 - 4:31
So it's been 30 years and we have come a long way.
  • 4:31 - 4:35
From beeing a small group of nerds and geeks
  • 4:35 - 4:40
    whose advice were mostly ignored,
  • 4:40 - 4:43
it all became a huge movement,
  • 4:43 - 4:48
a huge movement of people whose advise is still mostly ignored.
  • 4:48 - 4:53
    laughter and applause
  • 4:58 - 5:01
But this year's congress has no motto.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    Why is that?
  • 5:04 - 5:06
Usually we come up with some kind of twist
  • 5:06 - 5:15
and somebody has an idea to convey a message to the community, as well as the public.
  • 5:17 - 5:24
But this year there is no motto. Because this year we are speechless.
  • 5:25 - 5:28
    Our mind is empty.
  • 5:29 - 5:33
There was no message that was strong enough
  • 5:33 - 5:37
and that was describing what was actually going on inside us.
  • 5:37 - 5:42
    Nobody came up with something.
  • 5:42 - 5:46
    So there is no motto.
  • 5:46 - 5:50
Because we found ourselves waking up.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
Waking up from a bad dream.
  • 5:53 - 6:00
Waking up from the bad dream to a reality that was even worse.
  • 6:00 - 6:04
And a reality that can no longer be ignored.
  • 6:04 - 6:08
We woke up into "Hollywood Reality",
  • 6:08 - 6:15
you know where an agent on TV puts your soul up on screen
  • 6:15 - 6:21
with a few clicks and no apparent skills involved.
  • 6:21 - 6:26
And usually we have been laughing a lot when this happens.
  • 6:29 - 6:33
But this year we stopped laughing. It's not funny.
  • 6:37 - 6:44
Because this agent, this is an digital Agent Orange.
  • 6:45 - 6:52
This agent came and took the leaves from the forest where we used to live and flourish.
  • 6:52 - 6:59
The forest that feeds us. The forest that brings value to our lives.
  • 7:01 - 7:06
That allows us to learn, to evolve and to have fun.
  • 7:10 - 7:13
So what shall we do now?
  • 7:13 - 7:17
How can we deal with this situation?
  • 7:17 - 7:21
Is there anything left to do or is it just "Game Over"?
  • 7:21 - 7:27
Shall we just give the money back to the shareholders and quit?
  • 7:27 - 7:32
Can we rewind history and start over from scratch?
  • 7:32 - 7:38
Probably not. We have embarked on a trend that looks irreversible.
  • 7:40 - 7:48
But let's rewind a bit nevertheless.
    Let's look back in time.
  • 7:48 - 7:58
So 1984 was not only the first year when this congress came to life, it was also a tale, a scary tale.
  • 7:59 - 8:03
But as it turned out not a fairy tale.
  • 8:05 - 8:09
And we told the world that this was not an instruction manual, you know.
  • 8:09 - 8:15
But something to be aware of. But nobody listened.
  • 8:16 - 8:23
But also in 1984 we came together as a community, as a group of like minded people,
  • 8:23 - 8:28
that shared knowledge and discussed the future.
  • 8:28 - 8:34
We saw the risks but we also saw the chances, and we still do.
  • 8:34 - 8:39
And because the best way to predict the future is to invent it,
  • 8:39 - 8:47
the hackers formed the net based on their core principles: trust and friendship.
  • 8:48 - 8:57
Turns out this was not enough. So now it's 2013.
  • 8:57 - 9:04
We are way ahead in the 21st century that was once the glorious future we were all longing for.
  • 9:04 - 9:11
But now it all seems so broken and so useless.
  • 9:11 - 9:17
What we need to do now? We have to reinvent the net.
  • 9:19 - 9:21
We have to rethink the net.
  • 9:21 - 9:30
We need to redesign our forest so that we can still live in harmony, but we are also save from the predators.
  • 9:30 - 9:35
What we need is a New Standards Alliance.
  • 9:37 - 9:46
A force so strong, that it can at least slow the pace of global surveillance to get some control back.
  • 9:46 - 9:53
You can do it. And you can start here.
  • 9:55 - 9:58
    Right here, right now.
  • 9:59 - 10:04
    And your conscience matters!
  • 10:04 - 10:08
Always do what your heart tells you.
  • 10:08 - 10:11
    Do not follow the money.
  • 10:11 - 10:17
If there's one thing we've learned from this lost year it's that each of us can make a difference.
  • 10:17 - 10:24
One person can start a wave that can't be stopped.
  • 10:24 - 10:29
Oh and by the way we have an appointment.
  • 10:29 - 10:32
We have an appointment to make.
  • 10:32 - 10:39
To make it easier for all of you, to move quickly and without fear
  • 10:39 - 10:47
I hereby declare you being genuine and authorized popes.
  • 10:47 - 10:51
    laughter and applause
  • 10:51 - 11:01
And as a pope is someone who is not under the authority of the authorities, you should do well now.
  • 11:01 - 11:06
So protected from all the evil in the world I leave you and thank you again for being awesome
  • 11:06 - 11:12
and for wanting to be a part of the solution.
  • 11:12 - 11:17
"Carpe Noctem", use the night, have fun and let's save the world!
  • 11:17 - 11:21
    applause
  • 11:21 - 11:32
