How to seek the paranormal | Carrie Poppy | TEDxVienna
-
0:09 - 0:14Eight years ago, I was haunted
by an evil spirit. -
0:17 - 0:19I was 25 at the time,f
-
0:19 - 0:24and I was living in a tiny house
behind someone else's house -
0:24 - 0:25in Los Angeles.
-
0:25 - 0:29It was this guest house,
it had kind of been dilapidated, -
0:29 - 0:31not taken care of for a long time.
-
0:31 - 0:35And one night, I was sitting there
-
0:35 - 0:39and I got this really spooky feeling,
-
0:39 - 0:42kind of the feeling
like you're being watched. -
0:42 - 0:45But no one was there except my two dogs,
-
0:45 - 0:47and they were just chewing their feet.
-
0:48 - 0:52And I looked around. No one was there.
-
0:52 - 0:56And I thought, OK,
it's just my imagination. -
0:56 - 0:59But the feeling just kept getting worse,
-
0:59 - 1:04and I started to feel
this pressure in my chest, -
1:04 - 1:07sort of like the feeling
when you get bad news. -
1:07 - 1:10But it started to sink lower and lower
-
1:10 - 1:12and almost hurt.
-
1:13 - 1:16And over the course of that week,
this feeling got worse and worse, -
1:16 - 1:22and I started to become convinced
that something was there -
1:22 - 1:25in my little guest house, haunting me.
-
1:27 - 1:30And I started to hear these sounds,
-
1:30 - 1:36this "whoosh," kind of whisper,
like something passing through me. -
1:37 - 1:41I called my best friend, Claire, and said,
-
1:42 - 1:45"I know this is going to sound crazy,
-
1:45 - 1:47but, um ...
-
1:47 - 1:52I think there's a ghost in my house,
and I need to get rid of it." -
1:52 - 1:57And she said -- she's very
open-minded -- and she said, -
1:57 - 1:58"I don't think you're crazy.
-
2:00 - 2:03I think you just need
to do a cleansing ritual." -
2:03 - 2:06(Laughter)
-
2:06 - 2:09"So get some sage and burn it,
-
2:09 - 2:12and tell it to go away."
-
2:12 - 2:16So I said, "OK,"
and I went and I bought sage. -
2:16 - 2:20I had never done this before,
so I set the sage on fire, -
2:20 - 2:26waved it about, and said, "Go away!
This is my house! I live here. -
2:26 - 2:28You don't live here!"
-
2:29 - 2:32But the feeling stayed.
Nothing got better. -
2:32 - 2:35And then I started to think,
-
2:35 - 2:37OK, well now this thing is probably
just laughing at me, -
2:37 - 2:40because it hasn't left,
-
2:40 - 2:43and I probably just look like
this impotent, powerless thing -
2:43 - 2:45that couldn't get it to go away.
-
2:45 - 2:49So every day I'd come home
-
2:49 - 2:55and you guys, this feeling got so bad
that -- I mean, I'm laughing at it now -- -
2:55 - 2:59but I would sit there in bed
and cry every night. -
3:01 - 3:05And the feeling on my chest
got worse and worse. -
3:05 - 3:07It was physically painful.
-
3:08 - 3:11And I even went to a psychiatrist
-
3:11 - 3:15and tried to get her
to prescribe me medicine, -
3:15 - 3:19and she wouldn't just because
I don't have schizophrenia, OK. -
3:19 - 3:22(Laughter)
-
3:22 - 3:29So finally I got on the internet,
and I Googled "hauntings." -
3:29 - 3:32And I came upon this forum
of ghost hunters. -
3:32 - 3:35But these were a special
kind of ghost hunters -- -
3:35 - 3:36they were skeptics.
-
3:36 - 3:42They believed that every case of ghosts
that they had investigated so far -
3:42 - 3:44had been explained away by science.
-
3:44 - 3:48And I was like, "OK, smart guys,
this is what's happening to me, -
3:48 - 3:52and if you have an explanation for me,
I would love to hear it." -
3:52 - 3:55And one of them said, "OK.
-
3:55 - 3:59Um, have you heard
of carbon monoxide poisoning?" -
4:01 - 4:06And I said, "Yeah.
-
4:06 - 4:09Like, gas poisoning?"
-
4:09 - 4:12Carbon monoxide poisoning
is when you have a gas leak -
4:12 - 4:14leaking into your home.
-
4:14 - 4:20I looked it up, and the symptoms
of carbon monoxide poisoning -
4:20 - 4:22include a pressure on your chest ...
-
4:23 - 4:24(Laughter)
-
4:24 - 4:27auditory hallucinations -- whoosh --
-
4:27 - 4:31and an unexplained feeling of dread.
-
4:32 - 4:35So that night, I called the gas company.
-
4:35 - 4:39I said, "I have an emergency.
I need you to come out. -
4:39 - 4:42I don't want to get into the story now,
but I need you to come out." -
4:42 - 4:43(Laughter)
-
4:43 - 4:46They came out. I said,
"I suspect a gas leak." -
4:46 - 4:48They brought their carbon
monoxide detector, -
4:48 - 4:50and the man said,
-
4:50 - 4:54"It's a really good thing
that you called us tonight, -
4:54 - 4:56because you could have been
dead very soon." -
4:59 - 5:03Thirty-seven percent of Americans
believe in haunted houses, -
5:04 - 5:09and I wonder how many of them
have been in one -
5:09 - 5:12and how many of them have been in danger.
-
5:14 - 5:19So that haunting story
has led me to my job. -
5:19 - 5:21I'm an investigator,
and I'm an investigator in two senses: -
5:22 - 5:23I'm an investigative journalist,
-
5:23 - 5:26and I'm also an investigator
of the claims of the paranormal -
5:26 - 5:28and claims of the spiritual.
-
5:28 - 5:30And that means a few things.
-
5:30 - 5:34Sometimes that means that I'm pretending
to need an exorcism -
5:34 - 5:38so I can get -- yes, that's right! --
so I can go to an exorcist -
5:38 - 5:42and see if he's using gimmicks
or psychological tricks -
5:42 - 5:45to try to convince someone
that they're possessed. -
5:45 - 5:48Sometimes that means
I'm going undercover in a fringe group -
5:48 - 5:52which I report on
for a podcast that I co-host. -
5:52 - 5:57And I've done over 70 investigations
like this with my co-host, Ross. -
5:57 - 6:02And I would love to tell you
that nine times out of 10, science wins, -
6:02 - 6:04saves the day, it's all explained.
-
6:04 - 6:05That's not true.
-
6:06 - 6:12The truth is, 10 times out of 10,
science wins, it saves the day. -
6:12 - 6:13(Laughter)
-
6:13 - 6:20(Applause)
-
6:23 - 6:24(Applause ends)
-
6:24 - 6:27And that doesn't mean
there's no such thing as a mystery. -
6:27 - 6:31Of course there are mysteries,
but a mystery is a mystery. -
6:31 - 6:32It is not a ghost.
-
6:34 - 6:37Now, I believe there are
two kinds of truth, -
6:37 - 6:42and it's taken me a while to get
to this place, but I think this is right, -
6:42 - 6:43so hear me out.
-
6:43 - 6:46I think there is outer truth
and there's inner truth. -
6:46 - 6:49So if you say to me,
-
6:49 - 6:52"There was a man named Jesus
and he once existed," -
6:52 - 6:54that's outer truth, right?
-
6:54 - 6:56And we can go and look
at the historical record. -
6:56 - 6:58We can determine
whether that seems to be true. -
6:58 - 7:01And I would argue,
it does seem to be true. -
7:01 - 7:07If you say, "Jesus rose
from the dead," -- ooh, trickier. -
7:07 - 7:09(Laughter)
-
7:09 - 7:16I would say that's an outer-truth claim,
-
7:16 - 7:18because he physically rose or he didn't.
-
7:19 - 7:21I'm not going to get into
whether he rose or he didn't, -
7:21 - 7:23but I would say
that's an outer-truth claim. -
7:23 - 7:25It happened or it didn't happen.
-
7:25 - 7:29But if you say, "I don't care
whether he rose from the dead. -
7:29 - 7:31It's symbolically important to me,
-
7:31 - 7:35and that metaphor is so meaningful,
so purposeful to me, -
7:35 - 7:37and I'm not going to try
to persuade you of it," -
7:37 - 7:40now you've moved it
from outer truth to inner truth, -
7:40 - 7:41from science to art.
-
7:41 - 7:44And I think we have a tendency
to not be clear about this, -
7:44 - 7:48to try to move our inner truths
to outer truths, -
7:48 - 7:51or to not be fair about it to each other,
-
7:51 - 7:53and when people are telling us
their inner truths, -
7:53 - 7:57to try to make them defend them
by outer-truth standards. -
7:57 - 8:01So I'm talking here about outer truth,
about objective things. -
8:01 - 8:06And there was an objective reality
in my haunted house, right? -
8:06 - 8:08Now that I've told you about the gas leak,
-
8:08 - 8:10I doubt a single person here
would be like, -
8:10 - 8:12"I still think there was a ghost, too."
-
8:12 - 8:13(Laughter)
-
8:13 - 8:16Because as soon as we have
these scientific explanations, -
8:16 - 8:18we know to give up the ghost.
-
8:18 - 8:22We use these things as stopgaps
for things that we can't explain. -
8:22 - 8:24We don't believe them because of evidence;
-
8:24 - 8:26we believe them because
of a lack of evidence. -
8:27 - 8:30So there is a group in Los Angeles
-
8:30 - 8:34called the Independent
Investigations Group, or the IIG, -
8:34 - 8:36and they do great work.
-
8:36 - 8:38They'll give a $10,000 prize
-
8:38 - 8:43to anyone who can show,
under scientific conditions, -
8:43 - 8:45that they have a paranormal ability.
-
8:45 - 8:47No one's done it yet,
-
8:47 - 8:52but they've had a couple people
who claim that they were clairaudients, -
8:52 - 8:56which means that they can hear voices
either from the great beyond -
8:56 - 8:58or they can read minds.
-
8:58 - 9:01And they had one person
who was very sincere, -
9:01 - 9:04who believed that he could read minds.
-
9:04 - 9:10So they set up a test with him,
and this is the way it always works. -
9:10 - 9:12The group says, "OK, we have a protocol,
-
9:12 - 9:14we have a way to scientifically test this.
-
9:14 - 9:16Do you agree with it?"
-
9:16 - 9:17The person says yes. Then they test it.
-
9:17 - 9:19It's very important that both sides agree.
-
9:20 - 9:22They did that, they tested him.
-
9:22 - 9:24They said, "OK, you know what?
-
9:24 - 9:28You weren't able to predict
what Lisa was thinking. -
9:28 - 9:30It matched up about the same as chance.
-
9:30 - 9:32Looks like you don't have the power."
-
9:33 - 9:35And that gave them the opportunity
-
9:35 - 9:40to compassionately sit down with him
and have a very difficult discussion, -
9:40 - 9:42which basically amounted to,
-
9:42 - 9:47"Hey, we know you're sincere,
and what that means is, -
9:47 - 9:49you do hear something in your head."
-
9:49 - 9:55And that guy got to make
the very difficult decision, -
9:55 - 10:02but really the life-changing decision
about whether to go get help. -
10:02 - 10:05We're actually helping people
to make these connections -
10:05 - 10:11that maybe before seemed like
otherworldly explanations, -
10:11 - 10:16help draw us into reality
and maybe change our lives for the better. -
10:17 - 10:23Now, on the other hand,
maybe one time it'll turn out to be true. -
10:24 - 10:26Maybe we'll find out there are ghosts,
-
10:26 - 10:28and holy shit, it will be the best thing!
-
10:28 - 10:31And every time I do
one of these investigations, -
10:31 - 10:33I still get so excited,
-
10:33 - 10:35and I'm like 75 into them,
-
10:35 - 10:39and still I swear on number 76,
I'm going to be like, "This is the one!" -
10:39 - 10:40(Laughter)
-
10:40 - 10:45Maybe I'm just eternally optimistic,
but I hope I never lose this hope, -
10:45 - 10:49and I invite you to take
this same attitude -
10:49 - 10:51when people share
their outer beliefs with you. -
10:51 - 10:54When talking about testable claims,
-
10:54 - 10:57respect them enough to ask
these good questions. -
10:57 - 11:00Challenge and see
how you can examine them together, -
11:00 - 11:04because there's this idea
that you can't respect a belief -
11:04 - 11:07and still challenge it,
but that's not true. -
11:07 - 11:10When we jiggle the lock,
when we test the claim, -
11:10 - 11:14we're saying, OK, I respect you,
I'm listening to what you're saying, -
11:14 - 11:16I'm going to test it out with you.
-
11:16 - 11:19We've all had that experience
where you're telling someone something, -
11:19 - 11:22and they're like, "Oh,
that's really interesting, yeah," -
11:22 - 11:24you know you're being had.
-
11:24 - 11:27But when someone says, "Really? Huh.
-
11:28 - 11:31Sounds a little sketchy to me,
but I'm listening," -
11:31 - 11:34you at least know
you're being engaged and respected. -
11:34 - 11:37And that's the kind of attitude
we should have with these claims. -
11:37 - 11:39That's showing someone
that you care what they're saying. -
11:39 - 11:42That's respect.
-
11:45 - 11:50Now, yes, most of these searches
will come up empty, -
11:50 - 11:52but that's how all of science works.
-
11:52 - 11:56Every cure for cancer so far
has not panned out, -
11:56 - 11:59but we don't stop looking,
-
11:59 - 12:00for two reasons.
-
12:00 - 12:03Because number one, the answer matters.
-
12:03 - 12:07Whether it's looking at the afterlife
or the paranormal or the cure for cancer, -
12:07 - 12:09it all amounts to the same question:
-
12:09 - 12:12How long will we be here?
-
12:13 - 12:17And two, because looking for the truth,
-
12:17 - 12:18being open-minded,
-
12:18 - 12:22and being willing to be wrong
and to change your whole worldview -
12:22 - 12:24is awe-inspiring.
-
12:25 - 12:29I still get excited at ghost stories
every single time. -
12:29 - 12:32I still consider that every group
I join might be right, -
12:32 - 12:34and I hope I never lose that hope.
-
12:34 - 12:36Let's all never lose that hope,
-
12:36 - 12:39because searching for what's out there
-
12:39 - 12:41helps us understand what's in here.
-
12:42 - 12:48And also, please have
a carbon monoxide detector in your home. -
12:48 - 12:49(Laughter)
-
12:49 - 12:50Thank you.
-
12:50 - 12:56(Applause)
