-
During the nineteen nineties
Segundo had a growing family
-
and a promising career as a university
professor in his home country of Ecuador.
-
His life changed dramatically when
he was asked by the school board
-
to do something illegal
for one of his students.
-
Upon refusing the request,
Segundo received death threats
-
and was ultimately forced to
flee to Spain with his family.
-
After his marriage failed
Segundo found himself alone
-
and still struggling to
adapt to the new culture.
-
Amidst these difficulties, he met missionaries from
the Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints.
-
When the Madrid Temple was dedicated,
I felt the need to make a change in my life
-
and enter the House of the Lord.
-
Even though Segundo joined the Church and
now enjoyed many blessings of the Gospel
-
his struggles to make
a living did not cease.
-
Moreover, Spain's economic crisis
made it increasingly difficult
-
for older people to find employment.
-
Knowing of Segundo's desire to
improve his professional standing
-
his priesthood leaders felt inspired
to give him a special calling.
-
Though he had no previous experience
with the self reliance initiative
-
he was called to be the
Self-reliance Specialist.
-
I felt that this was the answer
I was looking for from the Lord.
-
Wanting to set a positive example fo
others he took the My Job Search course
-
and immediately began applying
the principles to his own life.
-
For me, the most important lessons
of the principles of self-reliance
-
are obedience, faith in Jesus
Christ and being committed.
-
I am confident that if I didn't have
that guidance, I wouldn't progress.
-
Segundo's faith was quickly rewarded
-
in that eight days after he
completed his self-reliance course
-
he found a job caring for elderly people.
-
To his delight, Segundo's
new employer even agreed
-
to let him have Sundays
off so could attend church.
-
It's helped me to understand
the purpose of life
-
and despite all the trials
and doubts I've had,
-
I've seen that God always placed
me where He wanted me to be.
-
With his calling to help other
people become self-reliant
-
Segundo loves to point how the self-reliance
initiative has blessed his own life.
-
Many times I feel nervous
talking about self-reliance
-
but then words that I never
thought I could say come to me
-
and that is the Spirit of
the Lord inside me.
-
My life changed when I was
introduced to the Gospel
-
and I applied the things
that I was taught.
