Not Synced
Our world has
many superheroes.
-
Not Synced
But they have the worst of
all superpowers: invisibility.
-
Not Synced
For example, the Catadores,
-
Not Synced
workers who collect recyclable
materials for a living.
-
Not Synced
Catadores emerge from social
inequality, unemployment,
-
Not Synced
and the abundance
of solid waste
-
Not Synced
from the deficiency of the
waste collection system.
-
Not Synced
Catadores provide heavy,
honest and essential work
-
Not Synced
that benefits the entire population.
-
Not Synced
But they are not
acknowledged for it.
-
Not Synced
Here in Brazil, they collect
90 percent of all the waste
-
Not Synced
that's actually recycled.
-
Not Synced
Most of the Catadores
work independent ally,
-
Not Synced
picking waste on the streets
and selling to junk yards
-
Not Synced
at very low prices.
-
Not Synced
They may collect over 300 kilos
-
Not Synced
in their bags, shopping carts,
bicycles and carroças.
-
Not Synced
Carroças are carts built
from wood or metal
-
Not Synced
and found in several
streets in Brazil,
-
Not Synced
much like graffiti and street art.
-
Not Synced
And this is how I first found
these marginalized superheroes .
-
Not Synced
I am a graffiti artist and activist
-
Not Synced
and my art is social, environmental
and political in nature.
-
Not Synced
In 2007, I took my work beyond walls
and onto the Carroças
-
Not Synced
as a new mode of
support for my message.
-
Not Synced
But at this time, giving
voice to the Catadores.
-
Not Synced
By adding art and humor
to the cause,
-
Not Synced
it became more appealing,
-
Not Synced
which helped call attention
to the Catadores
-
Not Synced
and improve their self esteem.
-
Not Synced
and now they are famous on the street,
on mass media, in social.
-
Not Synced
The thing is, I plunged
into this universe
-
Not Synced
and have not stopped
working since.
-
Not Synced
I have painted over 200 Carroças
in many cities
-
Not Synced
and have been invited to do
exhibitions and trips worldwide.
-
Not Synced
And then I realized that Catadores,
in their invisibility,
-
Not Synced
are not exclusive to Brazil.
-
Not Synced
I met them in Argentina, Chile,
Bolivia South Africa, Turkey
-
Not Synced
and even developed countries such as
the United States and Japan.
-
Not Synced
And this was when I realized
-
Not Synced
that I need to have more
people join the cause.
-
Not Synced
It's a big challenge.
-
Not Synced
Then, I created a collaborative movement
-
Not Synced
called Pimp my Carroça,
-
Not Synced
a large crowd fund event,
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
Thank you.
-
Not Synced
So Pimp my Carroça is a large
crowd fund event
-
Not Synced
to help Catadores
in their Carroças.
-
Not Synced
Catadores are assisted by
wealthy professionals
-
Not Synced
and healthcare-like physicians
dentists, podiatrists,
-
Not Synced
stylists, and message therapists
and much more.
-
Not Synced
But they also receive safety shirts,
gloves, rain coats and eye glasses
-
Not Synced
to see, in high definition, the city.
-
Not Synced
Their Carroças are renovated
by our incredible volunteers.
-
Not Synced
Then receive safety items, too:
-
Not Synced
reflective tapes, horns and mirrors.
-
Not Synced
then, finally, painted by a street artist
-
Not Synced
and become part of part of this huge amazing
-
Not Synced
bio-art exhibition
-
Not Synced
pimp my carjosa took the streets
-
Not Synced
of sao paolo, rio de jinero
-
Not Synced
and curichipa
-
Not Synced
but, to meet the demand in other cities,
-
Not Synced
including outside of brazil
-
Not Synced
we have created Pimpx
-
Not Synced
inspired by TEDx,
-
Not Synced
and it's a simplified, do it yourself,
-
Not Synced
crowd fund edition of pimp my carjosa
-
Not Synced
so everybody can join
-
Not Synced
in two years, over 170 catadores
-
Not Synced
800 volunteers and 200 street artists
-
Not Synced
and more than 100 donators
-
Not Synced
have been involved in the Pimp my Carjosa movement
-
Not Synced
who actions have even been used
-
Not Synced
to teach recycle at a local school
-
Not Synced
so, cat adores are leaving invisibility
-
Not Synced
behind and becoming increasingly
-
Not Synced
respected and valued
-
Not Synced
because of their pimped carjosas,
-
Not Synced
they are able to fight back
-
Not Synced
prejudice, increase their income
-
Not Synced
and their interaction with society
-
Not Synced
so now, id like to challenge you
-
Not Synced
to start looking at and acknowledging the catadores
-
Not Synced
and other invisible superheroes from your city
-
Not Synced
try to see the world as one
-
Not Synced
without boundaries
-
Not Synced
and tiers
-
Not Synced
believe it or not
-
Not Synced
there are over 20 millioncatadores worldwide
-
Not Synced
so, next time you see one
-
Not Synced
recognize them as a vital part
-
Not Synced
of our society
-
Not Synced
Thank you
-
Not Synced
