Opposite of a number

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    - [Voiceover] What I want
to do in this video is
  • 0:02 - 0:07
think about what it means to
have an opposite of a number.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
Let me draw a number line here.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    Let's draw a number line.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    And let's put some numbers
    on this number line.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    We can start at zero,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
and if we go to the right
    we have positive numbers.
  • 0:20 - 0:25
    One, two, three, four, five.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
As we go to the left we
    get more and more negative.
  • 0:28 - 0:33
    So negative one, negative
    two, negative three,
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    negative four, and I can
keep going on and on and on.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
Let's pick one of these numbers.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
Let's say that we pick the number three.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
What is going to be the
    opposite of the number three?
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    Well the opposite of the
    number is a number that's
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    the same distance from
zero but on the other side.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
So three is three to the right of zero.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    One, two, three.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
So its opposite is going to
be three to the left of zero.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    One, two, three.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
    So the opposite of
    three is negative three.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
Let me make a little table here.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
If we have the number, the number.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
And then we have its opposite.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    We have its opposite.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
So we just figured out that
if you have the number three,
  • 1:25 - 1:30
    its opposite is going
    to be negative three.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
Now what if your number is negative?
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    What if your number, let's
    say the number negative four.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    What's the opposite of that?
  • 1:39 - 1:40
And I encourage you to pause the video
  • 1:40 - 1:42
and try to think about it on your own.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    Well, you say, okay, negative
    four is right over here.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    That's negative four.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
It is four to the left of zero.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
One, two, three, four to the left of zero.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
So its opposite is going to
be four to the right of it.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    So one, two, three, four.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    It's going to be positive.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
It's going to be positive four.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    So you're probably starting
    to see a pattern here.
  • 2:06 - 2:10
The opposite of a number is going to be
  • 2:10 - 2:13
the opposite sign of that number.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
If you have a positive three here,
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    its opposite is going
    to be negative three.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
If you start with negative four,
  • 2:20 - 2:23
its opposite is going to be positive four.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    One way to think about
it, it's going to have the
  • 2:25 - 2:29
    same absolute value but
    have a different sign.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
Or another way to think about it is,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    however if this is three
    to the right of zero,
  • 2:33 - 2:36
its opposite is going to be
three to the left of zero.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
Or if the number is four
    to the left of zero,
  • 2:39 - 2:43
its opposite is going to be
four to the right of zero.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
So we'll do one last one.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    What is the opposite of...
  • 2:48 - 2:52
What's going to be the opposite of one?
  • 2:52 - 2:55
Well one is one to the right of zero,
  • 2:55 - 2:58
so its opposite is going to
be one to the left of zero,
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    or negative one.
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    Or another way to think
    about it, one is positive
  • 3:02 - 3:04
so its opposite is where you're
    going to change the sign.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    Instead of being positive
    it's going to be negative.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
It's going to be negative one.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
Either way that you can think about it.
