0:56 - 1:04When IDM was all over the place, we've had to rethink the way we're organizing concerts.

1:04 - 1:11Watching a guy using his laptop, alone on stage... well it's kind of boring!

1:11 - 1:16So we've tried to present this kind of musicians in different conditions.

1:16 - 1:22What if those music would be played in an open air venue, at the sunset ?

1:22 - 1:26Wouldn't be easier and way more fun to listen to it ?

1:26 - 1:30We've then explore more aesthetics, using the same "recipe",

1:30 - 1:42presenting new music to new audience at parking lots, subway stations, churches ...

1:42 - 1:48And at the French cultural center, you'll understand that electronic music can be plural

1:48 - 1:53It can be as hot as Coupé-Décalé played in the most sexy club late at night,

1:53 - 1:59but it can also be very soft, gentle, calm!

2:28 - 2:36it's kind of oldshool! we're now trying to find more intuitive way to do electronic music.

3:20 - 3:24I'm a computer engineer from Toulouse.

3:24 - 3:28I'm in Congo to organize music softwares trainings.

3:28 - 3:34The aim is to present several music softwares and see how they could match the local needs,

3:34 - 3:38and then develop new creative approaches.

3:38 - 3:47I'm Hugo "Douster", I came from Lyon and I'm a dj and producer of electronic music for about 10 years.

3:47 - 3:53I'm Jeremie, I came from Lyon and I'm a music producer under the moniker of "Jay Weed".

3:53 - 3:56I was first making rap music,

3:56 - 4:06and thanks to travelling - especially in South America, I've started to integrate different kind of music into my own mix.

4:06 - 4:12I really enjoy all kind of music, coming from all over the world...

4:12 - 4:19I'm then always interested by discovering new aestetics.

4:19 - 4:24I think that electronic music had become more and more democratic,

4:24 - 4:28because you can now do almost everything by yourself!

4:28 - 4:38Even a very low skilled musician can program some drum kit, a bass line and different kind of sounds.

4:52 - 4:57The first edition of Les Siestes Electroniques in Congo, in 2010,
-
4:57 - 5:03has made us realise that there is space for electronic music in Congo.

5:03 - 5:08The Congolese are willing to discover new musics!
-
5:08 - 5:13I'm especially interested by all the local underground subgenres of electronic music.
-
5:13 - 5:17Here, there, everywhere, people are making electronic music nowadays thanks to the advent of the personnal computer.
-
5:17 - 5:24Even if there is no pure electronic music in Congo such as house or techno,
-
5:24 - 5:36there is Coupé-Décalé or Ndombolo which are typical African music styles made with computers.
-
5:36 - 5:41It seems like we have a good team of local musicians around us!

5:41 - 5:44Pretty much motivated and open-minded...

5:44 - 5:49I think we won't face absolutely no problem working with these guys!

5:49 - 5:50But maybe I'm wrong, who knows ...

6:26 - 6:30It doesn't make any sense! How can you understand music then ?

9:30 - 9:37We try to deal with what we have and with that we manage the best part of it.

9:39 - 9:43When i'm here, i don't play music for myself, i do it for the customers.

9:43 - 9:47I have to play all kind of stuff as i play for all kinds of people

9:47 - 9:50A DJ must try to know about all kinds of music.

9:50 - 9:54Every week end, i go around the clubs to see the Djs.

9:54 - 9:59If there's a good track i haven't got already, i take it.

9:59 - 10:03Anyway, you go at friend's place and you have the Facebook, the internet, the Google and so on.

10:03 - 10:08My music is the romantic Zouk. I really like the Zouk.

10:08 - 10:11When i'm working the Zouk, i don't like to be disturb.

10:11 - 10:17The R'nB. R'nB is where i can express myself totally, peacefully.

10:17 - 10:19I see the girl dance, i'm in the show too...

10:19 - 10:21So it's my favorite music, the R'n'B.

10:21 - 10:25When i'm not here, there's no "ambiance" and it's the same when i feel weak.

10:25 - 10:28That's why the people respects the DJs!

10:31 - 10:35But if I call a girl, she respects me, she'll come!

10:35 - 10:40We aren't respected. People assume that we're weed's smokers,

10:40 - 10:44or an illiterate, somebody that has no level...

10:44 - 10:48Trully, people thinks that we do that job for girls!

10:48 - 10:51Somehow it's true, but not only!

10:51 - 10:54Girls come by themselves, to hit on you, in front of people!

10:54 - 10:56They're like "You know I'll love you, here's my phone number, call me!"

10:56 - 11:00You get numbers of course, but our purpose is still the love of music.

11:00 - 11:03It's our job, we were born to it, we live with it!

11:03 - 11:05Girls come by themselves, it's automatic!

11:05 - 11:12Even if you don't feel like it, they'll come anyway to bother you, so you got to deal with it!

11:19 - 11:23I start to work at 14:00, from 14:00 to 21:00.

11:23 - 11:27So as soon as people enter the room, I start mixing.

11:27 - 11:30When there's nobody I put mixtapes and I wait around,

11:30 - 11:34when people enter, i set the dancefloor on fire!

12:03 - 12:08Let's say they start at 15:00 and close around midnight.

12:08 - 12:15Nightclubs are different as they start around 20:00,

12:15 - 12:18and till 2:00 or 3:00 at night.

12:18 - 12:24Some people have that shedule: they start working around 7:30, and they finish at 14:00,

12:24 - 12:30and every congolese like to have a bier before going home!

12:30 - 12:34That's why we're opening around 14:00, to get that specific audience.

13:07 - 13:10Yes, we'll import the "neo-colonialist Acid House" in Congo!

13:10 - 13:1320 years later, is about the right time for acid house in Congo!

13:13 - 13:19Knowing that congolese may have problem to go around, as going around remains expensive,

13:19 - 13:24we organised some kind of "tour" based on buses.

13:24 - 13:27So we could bring a part of the audience from club to club.

13:27 - 13:37It gave consistency to the party as well, as the audience could see Jay Weed and Douster's mix evolving through the night.

13:37 - 13:42Excursions are made by daylight! It's now nightime, wtf?!

13:42 - 13:45It's as we were going to some warlock!

13:45 - 13:49- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs!- It looks like a club ...

13:49 - 13:51- Of course, we're in Vegas!

13:51 - 13:54- Men, it's no Las Vegas, it's Brazza!
-
13:54 - 14:04I'm not sure that mixing electronic stuffs in some rock or pop club in France would work...

14:04 - 14:08One chance out of two that people throw you tomatoes!
-
14:08 - 14:16The idea was to face the reality of what is a Brazzaville's club, and to see if it could work somehow.
-
14:16 - 14:22We've been in three different nightclubs, all really different from each other.
-
14:22 - 14:29We started with "Le Plaisir", a kind of neighborhood club, with a much younger audience.
-
14:29 - 14:34The ambiance was much more rough, with a funny Dj booth!
-
14:34 - 14:39I loved the Dj booth there!
-
14:39 - 14:42Sick light installation!
-
14:48 - 14:52When we arrived the resident dj was playing local music, audience was enjoying.
-
14:52 - 15:02We plugged in and Douster started playing Dancehall.
-
15:02 - 15:11You have to know that Dancehall is not really well known in Congo.
-
15:11 - 15:20In the Congelese clubs audience is used to listen to r'n'b, hip hop and coupé décalé, but clearly no dancehall...
-
15:20 - 15:29So even this beginning was surprising for the Congolese crowd.
-
15:29 - 15:32Mirrors are everywhere in the clubs. That struck me.
-
15:32 - 15:34And people are dancing in front of those mirrors!
-
15:34 - 15:38Everybody was in line, in front of the mirrors!
-
16:01 - 16:12The best Congolese dancer came to the party! He's the father of the congolese Michael Jackson doppleganger as well!
-
16:12 - 16:15And he has some crazy dance moves, believe me.
-
16:15 - 16:23This guy has imported the Smurf dance in Congo!

16:33 - 16:40"When music comes, rhythms diverge"

16:43 - 16:49When Jeremie was playing, the "head" of the local djs guild had hosted the mix,

16:49 - 16:59speaking about trance music and declaring some weird punchlines to the audience!

16:59 - 17:07"The ambiance doesn't choose... you just have to live it"

17:11 - 17:21"Tonight we have a special guest: the pleasure (play on words about the name of the club - le plaisir)"

17:21 - 17:25There is a lot of white people tonight!
-
17:25 - 17:29And I have had the feeling the white people were playing their white music ...
-
17:29 - 17:34I come, i here reggae, your music, but it's not my style!

17:34 - 17:38Le plaisir is my club. I'm going regularly to Le Plaisir.

17:38 - 17:43I've thought I could go to Le Plaisir after a hard week of work in order to relax...
-
17:43 - 17:48But you're playing your music and I'm not interested... at all!
-
18:04 - 18:07When we arrived at the second club, the atmosphere was different.
-
18:07 - 18:14First af all the light show was all about strobe, which is apparently a very trendy way of lightning things here.
-
18:14 - 18:18The mixing desk was about this height...
-
18:18 - 18:21So you have to get on two beer crates...
-
18:21 - 18:27which were quite unsteady...
-
18:27 - 18:37Me, Jeremie and a third guy taking care of lights: 3 people on 2 crates, it was little bit tight :)
-
18:37 - 18:47It looks like everything is always thrown together at the last minute ...
-
18:47 - 18:55When I was mixing, the light installation, with all the switchs on the wall you know, seems to have had a problem.
-
18:55 - 18:59So a fourth guy came up to fix it... We were five behind the desk then!
-
18:59 - 19:04The guy was pulling the electrical wires, making electrical sparkles at 20 cm of us!
-
19:04 - 19:10And the night became more and more electronic as one goes along.
-
19:10 - 19:16It became then more cutting edge, less casual for the Congolese crowd.
-
19:16 - 19:21We've played UK Funky, then hard Techno and stuff like that...
-
19:45 - 20:01At some point Jeremie was playing hard UK Funky and some Congelese MCs came up on stage and starts toasting!
-
20:01 - 20:05And it was pretty good, it fits!
-
20:05 - 20:14Some people even thought it was part of the original played tracks!
-
20:14 - 20:22At the end Mad Michel, the boss of the Boyoma-Boyoma club, made us a surprise.
-
20:22 - 20:25He asked to clear the dancefloor. Everybody stopped to dance.

20:25 - 20:30And then cames 4 kids, 14-16 yo
-
20:30 - 20:37They showed us some massive coupé décalé moves for about 25 mn, while the Dj was mixing super fast!
-
20:42 - 20:51An ecstatic show! The strobes were flashing, the dance moves were extreme!
-
20:56 - 20:59The atmosphere was definitively different compared to the European one...
-
20:59 - 21:03Way more hot. An extremely reactive audience.
-
21:03 - 21:10People that came to the Dj booth really made my night!
-
21:10 - 21:15As for the audience it was 50/50 I would say.
-
21:15 - 21:19Some people were quite curious, open to new sounds and jump into it,
-
21:19 - 21:27but some others were more reluctant and sometimes quite unhappy about this "novelty".
-
21:27 - 21:30But I hope altogether it has pleased most of them ...

21:30 - 21:33At least we were quite happy about it :)

21:33 - 21:35Generally speaking, it worked!

21:35 - 21:41Of course we haven't been able to pleased everyone...

21:41 - 21:45Then we went to Le Groove club.

21:45 - 21:48When we entered the club, it was packed!

21:48 - 21:55And when Douster and Jay Weed started mixing, people were watching, listening, but not dancing.

21:55 - 22:01I've had the feeling the French djs didn't take care of the reaction of the crowd,

22:01 - 22:06It looks like they were here to only satisfy themselves...

22:06 - 22:12It was a little bit like they didn't care about what was there before they came!

22:12 - 22:17So people started to leave the dancefloor... :)

22:17 - 22:26Some went out, for sure, because it was so much "European", too much for them...

22:26 - 22:30It didn't bother me. I was there because I was willing to discover.

22:30 - 22:35And when you're looking for something new, nothing can bother you!
-
22:35 - 22:48At some point, a bartender came and asked: "More African music! My customers are about to leave! I loose money!" :)

22:48 - 22:54The Congolese when they get to club, they wanna see their tables full of bottles! They spend a lot!
-
22:54 - 22:56They buy a lot of drinks!
-
22:56 - 23:01The Europeans, they only buy a bottle of beer from time to time ...

23:01 - 23:09Trully when we arrived at the last club, a little bit late, it may have been intrusive for the audience that was already there.

23:09 - 23:16I didn't know how the resident djs of all the "VIPs" would welcome us...

23:16 - 23:26You're a resident dj, you do your job and then come from nowhere young fellows that wanna play their music...
-
23:26 - 23:33Fact is we've been very warmly welcomed by all the resident djs!

23:33 - 23:39One of the main problems here is they just can't download tracks. Internet is too slow here.

23:39 - 23:42So it's hard to get new stuffs to play...

23:42 - 23:47At the end in Le Groove club the local djs wanted to get all the sound we've played!
-
23:47 - 23:53So we've filled up a hard drive, half drunk at 5 o'clock... Quite a funny moment.

23:53 - 23:59Inch Allah, one day, they will entertain their audience with all these weird "European" sounds they got that night!

24:25 - 24:29My vision about Africa? It's a mess and i like it!

24:29 - 24:33I've found quite happy folks here.

24:33 - 24:44It feels good! Their open-mindedness is a blessing!

24:44 - 24:49I must confess that I didn't knew much about Africa before coming here ...

24:49 - 24:58but what I would remember is the kindness... and the smooth African way of life which suits me well!

25:10 - 25:19We speak the same langage, so we think we understand each other...

25:19 - 25:25but it's way more complex!

25:25 - 25:30Our cultures are different. Our visions of the world are different.

25:30 - 25:37So even if we use the same words, the definition, the comprehension of it can be different.

25:37 - 25:44Some aspects of the Congolese culture are quite close from the French culture partly because of the colonization ...

25:44 - 25:53but there is always a slight difference in meaning that can create trouble even in really simple things.

25:53 - 25:57For example, when I set up a meeting at 9:00

25:57 - 26:02most of the Congolese think they have until 9:59 to arrive ... which is true!
-
26:02 - 26:06Here you also have to get used to a "last minute" way to do everything...
-
26:06 - 26:13Which would create much stress somewhere else but is just normal here! That's how things work here!

26:13 - 26:18We've booked buses for the club night, for instance
-
26:18 - 26:23I've had the firm confirmation only 3 days before the gig ...

26:23 - 26:26Unbelievable in France, absolutely normal here! :)

26:26 - 26:30The money issue is also quite hard to deal with.

26:30 - 26:34You're in a country where most of the people live with very few...
-
26:34 - 26:36But also in a country which has oil resources,
-
26:36 - 26:41and fortunes are made on that material of course...
-
26:41 - 26:45Next to this you have people that live with really hard conditions,
-
26:45 - 26:48with no water nor electricity,
-
26:48 - 26:53which can create some "kafka-like" situation sometimes...
-
26:53 - 27:01The fact that there's almost no internet connexion or let's say no fast connexion is also a difficulty.

27:01 - 27:06We're organizing an event in Congo from France,

27:06 - 27:17But even being here, getting the flyer's artwork from France was some sort of complicate thing...

27:46 - 27:53The congolese way to deal with the rain may be extreme: it just stops everything!....

27:53 - 27:58When it rains the taxi cabs and buses almost stop circulating, there are floods everywhere ...

28:01 - 28:08So I was expecting 2 or 3 participants today,

28:08 - 28:1615 trainees were there, behind their laptop, ready to work, already tweaking knobs!

28:16 - 28:21That's a clear indicator of succes!

28:21 - 28:31Congo is always like that, like in a rollercoaster, you can be really disappointed or really amazed within the same day...

29:32 - 29:35It's hard to fall totally in love with Pointe Noire..

29:35 - 29:40The gap between the poor and the rich is too big.

29:40 - 29:48We've been in the neighborhood, and where all the expats foreigners are living...

29:48 - 29:50It gives you a weird feeling...

29:50 - 30:00Here you have 1l of pure oil. You add this with coke and you can drive for 600 km :)

30:00 - 30:06There are more foreigners... more money too... and loads of oil!

30:06 - 30:08The Congolese oil is here!

30:08 - 30:21So the relation with the local inhabitants is different, from what we saw in the clubs, at the hotel...

30:21 - 30:31People are not as relax as in Brazza, they're seeing us, the white faces, as wealthy colonizers...

30:31 - 30:36When you're going to club here, only the prostitutes speak to you for instance ...

30:42 - 30:44Sunset DJ set at "L'escale d'Emex"

30:45 - 30:54During at least an hour and a half, we thought: ok, it's dead, no one will come!
-
30:54 - 31:01We could see people standing by their car, far away from the dance floor, waiting for something to happen...
-
31:01 - 31:06We were far from our "sunset at the sea" fantasy!
-
31:06 - 31:10Night and a huge shower rain felt at the same time...
-
31:10 - 31:15Oddly enough people came at that very moment and started to dance their ass of!
-
31:15 - 31:17And from there... It was massive!
-
31:52 - 32:05We had great feedback from the people! But nobody gave us 5000F notes as in Brazzaville: our audience didn't look so rich actually!
-
32:05 - 32:15But their unusual moves and choreography on the dancefloor were unmistakably a way to show their love!

32:15 - 32:20The audience was some sort of weird "mash-up" as gathered at that moment the people that hanged around the beach,

32:20 - 32:30the audience of inside the bar as it stayed open the whole time, broadcasting heavy coupé décalé,
-
32:30 - 32:35pointe noire's expats and brazzaville's friends came as well... and finally kids!

32:35 - 32:43Twenty of them came from a nearby youth club but above all we were join by all the street kids wanderer!

32:43 - 32:48We ended up with a feeling that was much likely our french version of Les siestes:

32:48 - 32:56a laid-back and easy going gathering, like a nice family meeting... It was a great moment!

33:04 - 33:15In france we are all blasé, having that feeling that everything have been wrote, said, seen or done.

33:15 - 33:28There's a refreshing feeling here in Congo, even if it's sometimes hard to introduce new things due to the weight of traditions.

33:28 - 33:35Things are still possible here and new things are emerging.
-
33:35 - 33:45I just hope that those congolese Siestes were not just about bringing something "cool" to the people... That we've been further.

33:45 - 33:57As people and musicians we have collect a whole lot of positive thing: sounds, discussions, way to see life, music...

33:57 - 34:05The sharing of all those ideas and sounds is a succes in itself for me, and it clearly moved me.

34:05 - 34:18More than ever i think that the people from Brazzaville are welcoming and have this appetite for new things.

34:18 - 34:29There are not so many roads here, it's hard to fly away, hard to use internet...

34:29 - 34:33So sharing is crucial, talking is crucial!

34:33 - 34:39The way people welcomed us, especially the club's DJ, that was awesome...

2nd Congolese edition for Les Siestes Electroniques! From November 21 till December 3 we’ve spent time digging into local sounds, playing at weird venues, exchanging with musicians and djs from the neighbourhood.
