How Things Change | Brother Phap Luu

  • 0:02 - 0:09
Well, change is something that is happening all the time.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
So what is interesting is how things change,
  • 0:17 - 0:27
because the way that I think, the way that I speak, the way that I act is effecting that change.
  • 0:30 - 0:37
And I want people to be happy, to be free, not to suffer.
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    So,
  • 0:41 - 0:48
so I learn ways to think and to speak and to act that create more happiness and less suffering.
  • 0:50 - 0:59
And I think whenever as human beings, we fall prey to desire to want more things,
  • 1:00 - 1:07
then there is an effect to that desire, that kind of craving.
  • 1:10 - 1:16
And especially in these past 150 years,
  • 1:17 - 1:31
we have deeply wanted to solve problems of malnutrition and lack of sanitation, poverty.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
And so we've done it as best we could.
  • 1:36 - 1:42
Our desire to to eradicate these problems in humanity,
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    have brought about industrialization,
  • 1:46 - 1:54
the use of ancient sunlight as fuel with petroleum and coal.
  • 1:55 - 2:00
And that has an effect because all things have an effect.
  • 2:03 - 2:07
So out of this desire to do good,
  • 2:09 - 2:16
which it had within it the seed of discontentment, not being happy with what is here, right now.
  • 2:16 - 2:23
We've brought this ancient sunlight up back into the light and
  • 2:28 - 2:36
and so all this carbon dioxide that has been held in the Earth, in the crust of the Earth
  • 2:36 - 2:42
for for millions of years is now coming back out into the atmosphere.
  • 2:43 - 2:49
So we know that when Earth first formed on life, as far as we can tell,
  • 2:49 - 2:55
there was much less oxygen in the atmosphere, much more carbon dioxide.
  • 2:56 - 3:00
So there's something ironic in that.
  • 3:00 - 3:09
Now, with so much life on the Earth, we are actually reversing the process.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    I think it's that...
  • 3:16 - 3:23
We need to learn how to be happy with what we have, with how things are right now,
  • 3:24 - 3:31
and look deeply into this collective craving for more.
  • 3:36 - 3:41
That is requiring such input of energy.
  • 3:44 - 3:54
It is requiring us to burn fuels that to release this energy of ancient sunlight.
  • 3:57 - 4:02
Yeah, that's where we need deep looking,
  • 4:03 - 4:06
and many people, we are all doing this deep looking now.
  • 4:07 - 4:14
We are finding ways to use the sunlight in the here and the now,
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    to provide what we need.
  • 4:19 - 4:24
But I think it needs to go deeper into looking into what we really need.
  • 4:26 - 4:31
Because when we get in touch with what we really need, then we we see we already have it.
  • 4:32 - 4:35
And what is that we need?
  • 4:36 - 4:39
We need to be happy and free,
  • 4:40 - 4:42
we need to be happy and free.
  • 4:43 - 4:53
We need to because when I am happy and free and my brother is happy and free, then there's no conflict.
  • 4:55 - 4:56
    There's no problem.
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    There's enough.
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    There's already enough.
  • 5:00 - 5:13
I think if we look into the food that we have on Earth, if we look into ways of moving around,
  • 5:14 - 5:18
then we can live on this paradise happy and free,
  • 5:18 - 5:24
still being able to to go where we like, still having enough to eat.
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    And
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    and not cause this suffering.
