Children: Who is God? (Part 1) - Tim Conway

  • 0:00 - 0:03
Some of the slides and videos
    shown on the projector
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    have been removed for the
    uploaded version of this teaching
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    due to possibly copyright
    issues that could arise
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    if republished on our channel.
  • 0:11 - 0:16
I'm going to talk about who God is.
  • 0:16 - 0:22
What do you think about that?
  • 0:22 - 0:25
So what did you learn about today?
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    Did you learn anything?
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    (unintelligible)
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    What does that mean?
  • 0:35 - 0:40
Did you learn something about God?
  • 0:40 - 0:47
    (unintelligible)
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    What did you learn?
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    Child: He's the Creator.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    Tim: Aha... now see,
    that one's interesting.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    What did you learn?
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    You what?
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    Child: That God is true.
  • 0:59 - 1:04
    Tim: God is true?
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    What did you learn?
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    Child: Attributes
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    Tim: What about His attributes?
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    He has some.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    Okay.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
I guess I've got to go that way.
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    Is that God?
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    Children: No.
  • 1:23 - 1:27
Tim: How do you know that's not God?
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    He finds that funny,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
but you know there are probably people
  • 1:32 - 1:35
who bow down and worship before stones.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
There are some people that have lived
  • 1:38 - 1:41
and are alive right now that don't think
  • 1:41 - 1:46
it's so funny to think that a rock is God.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    What is it, sweetie?
  • 1:48 - 1:53
    (unintelligible)
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    Child: God is everywhere.
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    Tim: God is everywhere?
  • 1:56 - 1:58
She knows that. Now that's good.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
    That's one of God's
    attributes right there.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    Is that rock everywhere?
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    Children: No.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
Tim: Well, see, that's a dead giveaway
  • 2:09 - 2:11
that we're not dealing with God, right?
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    The attributes fail.
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    If God is everywhere, that
    rock's not everywhere, is it?
  • 2:17 - 2:19
Somebody said that rock is created
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    and that's exactly right.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    That rock is not God.
    But you know what?
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    There are people that
    look at things like that
  • 2:26 - 2:28
and they say, oh, that's special.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
We should fall down and worship before it.
  • 2:31 - 2:32
But we should never do that.
  • 2:32 - 2:38
Because only God is worthy of our worship.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    That is not God.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
But you see, I'm asking myself,
  • 2:41 - 2:46
    okay, I'm going to stand
    before all of you today
  • 2:46 - 2:48
and we're going to ask this question:
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    Who is God?
  • 2:51 - 2:54
Now, can I put a picture
of God up on this screen?
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    I'm going to try.
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    I'm going to try.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    I tried by this rock,
    but you all caught me.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    You figured me out.
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    That rock isn't God.
  • 3:04 - 3:09
    Okay, I'm going to make
a better shot at it right now.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    Is that God?
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    Children: No.
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    Tim: What is that?
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    Children: Nothing.
  • 3:16 - 3:22
Tim: I actually went the wrong way.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    What about that?
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    Children: (unintelligible)
  • 3:26 - 3:29
Tim: Okay, now why isn't that God?
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    See, the rock wasn't alive.
  • 3:32 - 3:33
    Is God alive?
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    Children: Yes.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    Tim: Yes.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    That rock isn't alive, and
    that rock isn't everywhere.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    But this. What is this?
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    Children: A turtle.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
Tim: But isn't the turtle alive?
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    Children: Yes.
But God doesn't have a shell.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
Tim: God doesn't have a shell.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    So if we start thinking
    about God's attributes,
  • 3:53 - 3:57
this one doesn't line up either.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    This turtle isn't everywhere.
  • 3:59 - 4:02
    Children: (unintelligible)
  • 4:02 - 4:05
Tim: It has eyes. Does God have eyes?
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    Children: Yes.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    Tim: Does He?
  • 4:09 - 4:14
    Children: (unintelligible)
  • 4:14 - 4:15
Tim: Let me ask you this.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    Does God have eyes?
  • 4:18 - 4:23
Is God a man or is God spirit?
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    Does a spirit have eyes?
  • 4:25 - 4:26
    Children: No.
  • 4:26 - 4:27
    Tim: No.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    Now, we know this,
  • 4:30 - 4:34
    God became man.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    When He became man,
  • 4:36 - 4:38
He became like us - we know that.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
But we're going to get to that later.
  • 4:41 - 4:42
    So you caught me again.
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    The turtle's not God.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
Because God doesn't have a shell.
  • 4:47 - 4:52
    And where is God?
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    Children: Heaven.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
Tim: Is God just in Heaven?
    Is He here today?
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    Children: Yes.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
Tim: Is He at your home right now?
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    Children: Yes.
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    Tim: He's everywhere.
  • 5:05 - 5:09
    The turtle's not everywhere.
  • 5:09 - 5:11
And do you know what else?
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    God knows everything.
  • 5:14 - 5:18
That turtle - he doesn't know you.
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    And you know what else?
  • 5:20 - 5:24
    God is very wise.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
That turtle's wisdom is pretty limited.
  • 5:27 - 5:33
He probably knows how to swim.
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    Do you know what?
  • 5:35 - 5:39
    God specifically said:
  • 5:39 - 5:45
do not bow down to the sun
  • 5:45 - 5:49
or to the moon or to the stars.
  • 5:49 - 5:52
Do you know why He told men that?
  • 5:52 - 5:57
Many people worship the moon or the sun.
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    Is the moon God?
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    Children: No.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    Tim: Is God big?
  • 6:03 - 6:04
    Children: Yes.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    Tim: Is the moon big?
  • 6:06 - 6:07
    Children: Yes.
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    Tim: The moon is big.
  • 6:09 - 6:12
It may look small in the sky,
but it's big - real big.
  • 6:12 - 6:15
So if God's big and the moon's big,
  • 6:15 - 6:17
    is the moon God?
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    Children: No.
  • 6:19 - 6:20
    Tim: Is the moon bright?
  • 6:20 - 6:22
I see you've got a moon over there.
  • 6:22 - 6:23
    There's lights behind it.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
Is the moon bright at night?
  • 6:26 - 6:27
    Children: Yes.
  • 6:27 - 6:29
Tim: Does the Bible say God is light?
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    Children: Yes.
  • 6:31 - 6:32
    Tim: So is that God?
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    Children: No.
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    Tim: Why not?
  • 6:35 - 6:38
    Children: (unintelligible)
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    Tim: God made the universe.
  • 6:40 - 6:44
    Right. The moon is created.
  • 6:44 - 6:49
The moon is part of what God made.
  • 6:49 - 6:55
I'm going to give you another one here.
  • 6:55 - 7:00
    Brother John Dees, who's that?
  • 7:00 - 7:10
    That is called Ganesh.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    You may think that's funny.
  • 7:12 - 7:15
    You may think that's strange.
  • 7:15 - 7:17
But if you went and lived in India,
  • 7:17 - 7:18
    you wouldn't think it's strange
  • 7:18 - 7:20
    because you'd see it everywhere.
  • 7:20 - 7:26
    And they worship -
this is one of their gods.
  • 7:26 - 7:30
This is what many of the billions
  • 7:30 - 7:32
    of the people in India
  • 7:32 - 7:35
    believe is a god.
  • 7:35 - 7:37
Does that look like a god to you?
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    Children: No.
  • 7:39 - 7:42
Tim: It looks like a god to many people.
  • 7:42 - 7:45
    How do they worship Ganesh?
  • 7:45 - 7:49
    (unintelligible)
  • 7:49 - 7:52
    Okay, shush, everybody.
  • 7:52 - 7:54
Let's listen to John just a second.
  • 7:54 - 7:56
John: Gifts and offerings and prayers.
  • 7:56 - 7:58
    Tim: Gifts, offerings, and prayers.
  • 7:58 - 8:02
Now, prayers is a huge thing.
  • 8:02 - 8:06
You know why people have gods?
  • 8:06 - 8:09
    Because they want
    something from those gods.
  • 8:09 - 8:12
    They try to appease them
  • 8:12 - 8:14
    and they pray to them.
  • 8:14 - 8:17
    Listen.
  • 8:17 - 8:19
Is God - the true God -
  • 8:19 - 8:21
is He a God you can pray to?
  • 8:21 - 8:22
    Children: Yes.
  • 8:22 - 8:24
Tim: Why would you want to pray to Him?
  • 8:24 - 8:26
    Children: (unintelligible)
  • 8:26 - 8:30
    Tim: But what does that
mean for Him to be a god?
  • 8:30 - 8:33
    Why pray to God?
  • 8:33 - 8:35
Why should I pray to God?
  • 8:35 - 8:38
Why should you pray to God?
  • 8:38 - 8:41
    Hm? What's that?
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    Because we love Him?
  • 8:43 - 8:45
    But what's another reason?
  • 8:45 - 8:47
    That's a good reason.
  • 8:47 - 8:51
    Why pray to God?
  • 8:51 - 8:52
    Tell me.
  • 8:52 - 8:58
Children: Because God takes care of us.
  • 8:58 - 8:59
    Tim: There! Right there!
  • 8:59 - 9:02
    He takes care of us.
  • 9:02 - 9:04
You know why we pray to God?
  • 9:04 - 9:09
Because we have a God who answers prayer.
  • 9:09 - 9:11
We have a God who's kind.
  • 9:11 - 9:13
We have a God who saves.
  • 9:13 - 9:15
We have a God who gives.
  • 9:15 - 9:17
He is the Father of lights from whom
  • 9:17 - 9:20
every good and perfect gift comes.
  • 9:20 - 9:21
    Not that.
  • 9:21 - 9:23
    You pray to that?
  • 9:23 - 9:26
    You know the best you'll
get if you pray to that?
  • 9:26 - 9:28
    You'll get demons.
  • 9:28 - 9:31
That's the best you'll get there.
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    But they don't love you
  • 9:33 - 9:35
and they don't have your good in mind.
  • 9:35 - 9:37
You see, we have us a God we can pray to
  • 9:37 - 9:41
and He helps those who come to Him.
  • 9:41 - 9:44
If you pray to that god
    and you get an answer,
  • 9:44 - 9:46
    it's an answer of deception.
  • 9:46 - 9:52
    And all they mean to
    do is damn your souls.
  • 9:52 - 9:54
    That's not God either.
  • 9:54 - 9:58
    Now how about this?
  • 9:58 - 9:59
    Is that God?
  • 9:59 - 10:01
    Children: Yes.
  • 10:01 - 10:05
Tim: No! That is not God.
  • 10:05 - 10:08
    That is a picture -
  • 10:08 - 10:10
    for one, it's a picture.
  • 10:10 - 10:12
    No picture is God.
  • 10:12 - 10:16
You can't put God on a screen.
  • 10:16 - 10:18
You can't put God in that tent.
  • 10:18 - 10:20
You can't build a house for Him.
  • 10:20 - 10:23
    That's what Solomon knew
    when he built a temple.
  • 10:23 - 10:25
There's no building that can hold God.
  • 10:25 - 10:27
And you can't put God on a screen.
  • 10:27 - 10:29
    And you know what?
  • 10:29 - 10:33
    Even though God became man,
  • 10:33 - 10:37
and that God-man was Jesus Christ,
  • 10:37 - 10:40
    that is not Him.
  • 10:40 - 10:43
And we have no picture of Him.
  • 10:43 - 10:48
That right there is probably the creation
  • 10:48 - 10:52
    if I understand right of
    medieval Roman Catholics
  • 10:52 - 10:56
    and they basically simulated
    one of their priests.
  • 10:56 - 10:59
    That is not God.
  • 10:59 - 11:01
    Now, my great-grandmother, I think
  • 11:01 - 11:03
    she had that exact picture.
  • 11:03 - 11:04
That is a very well known picture.
  • 11:04 - 11:06
I think she had that exact picture
  • 11:06 - 11:09
on her wall in her bedroom.
  • 11:09 - 11:12
    She was a foul-mouthed, wicked,
  • 11:12 - 11:14
    100 year old woman.
  • 11:14 - 11:17
    She could swear with
    the best of the sailors,
  • 11:17 - 11:19
but she had that on her wall
  • 11:19 - 11:20
    and she trusted it.
  • 11:20 - 11:23
    Don't ever trust a picture.
  • 11:23 - 11:25
    That is not God.
  • 11:25 - 11:28
    That is not God.
  • 11:28 - 11:32
That is a photo of who knows who,
  • 11:32 - 11:36
but it's not even an accurate
    picture of Jesus Christ.
  • 11:36 - 11:40
    We do not know what
    Jesus Christ looked like.
  • 11:40 - 11:43
Pictures of Him never are right.
  • 11:43 - 11:45
    Never.
  • 11:45 - 11:48
    That is not God.
  • 11:48 - 11:50
    Sometimes God is portrayed
  • 11:50 - 11:52
    as just being light.
  • 11:52 - 11:54
You think of the glory of God
  • 11:54 - 11:57
or bright or a brightness or light.
  • 11:57 - 12:02
But listen, no picture can capture God.
  • 12:02 - 12:04
How can we have a picture
  • 12:04 - 12:07
    of somebody who's everywhere?
  • 12:07 - 12:09
    And who is spirit?
  • 12:09 - 12:13
    I can't put a picture up here.
  • 12:13 - 12:15
    But I'll tell you this,
  • 12:15 - 12:19
    listen.
  • 12:19 - 12:21
    Listen to what God says.
  • 12:21 - 12:25
    "Therefore watch
    yourselves very carefully.
  • 12:25 - 12:32
    Since you saw no form..."
  • 12:32 - 12:35
    This is what God's saying.
  • 12:35 - 12:39
    God says to Israel:
  • 12:39 - 12:41
You did not see any form.
  • 12:41 - 12:44
    You didn't see Me.
  • 12:44 - 12:47
"...When the day that God spoke to you
  • 12:47 - 12:49
    up on Mount Sinai out
of the midst of the fire."
  • 12:49 - 12:52
And He said this, "Beware, lest you
  • 12:52 - 12:56
    act corruptly by making any
    kind of carved images..."
  • 12:56 - 12:58
You don't want to make pictures.
  • 12:58 - 13:00
    You know why?
  • 13:00 - 13:02
    Pictures can never represent Him.
  • 13:02 - 13:04
    He's far greater.
  • 13:04 - 13:06
    Far, far greater.
  • 13:06 - 13:09
Nothing can hold God. He is so big.
  • 13:09 - 13:11
    But you know what?
  • 13:11 - 13:14
As big as He is, and He is big,
  • 13:14 - 13:17
He is everywhere at the same time.
  • 13:17 - 13:22
He knows everything all the time.
  • 13:22 - 13:24
    And He's good.
  • 13:24 - 13:25
    And you know what?
  • 13:25 - 13:27
    He saves sinners.
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    He's good.
  • 13:29 - 13:31
    But He said,
  • 13:31 - 13:34
"Don't make any form of any figure,
  • 13:34 - 13:36
the likeness of male or female,
  • 13:36 - 13:40
    any animal, the likeness
    of any winged bird,
  • 13:40 - 13:43
    the likeness of anything
    that creeps on the ground,
  • 13:43 - 13:44
    any fish in the water..."
  • 13:44 - 13:46
"Beware, lest you raise your eyes..."
  • 13:46 - 13:48
    Here it is, "...to heaven,
  • 13:48 - 13:49
    when you see the sun
  • 13:49 - 13:53
and the moon and the stars,
  • 13:53 - 13:56
and you be drawn away and bow down."
  • 13:56 - 14:01
You know what? This is what
    it means to bow down.
  • 14:01 - 14:04
It's right to bow to God.
  • 14:04 - 14:05
    You want to bow.
  • 14:05 - 14:07
Falling on your knees, you know what?
  • 14:07 - 14:11
Many of your parents who are Christians,
  • 14:11 - 14:13
we get on our knees at times
  • 14:13 - 14:16
and maybe some of you do too,
  • 14:16 - 14:19
but there are times we bow before Him.
  • 14:19 - 14:21
You never bow before the moon.
  • 14:21 - 14:27
    Never bow before some
    elephant-headed god.
  • 14:27 - 14:31
    Never bow before a picture
    that's supposedly of Jesus.
  • 14:31 - 14:36
Our God - He dwells in the heavens,
  • 14:36 - 14:38
    but you now what, even
    the heaven of heavens
  • 14:38 - 14:41
    can't contain Him.
  • 14:41 - 14:44
    We'll take you to another
    one. Look at this.
  • 14:44 - 14:47
"To whom then will you liken God,
  • 14:47 - 14:50
or what likeness compare Him with?"
  • 14:50 - 14:51
    Listen to that.
  • 14:51 - 14:53
To whom will you liken Him?
  • 14:53 - 14:55
    None!
  • 14:55 - 14:56
    There's no equal.
  • 14:56 - 15:00
You cannot equal God to anybody.
  • 15:00 - 15:04
    He's far greater than everything.
  • 15:04 - 15:05
    Now watch this.
  • 15:05 - 15:09
    (incomplete thought)
  • 15:09 - 15:11
To whom will you liken God?
  • 15:11 - 15:13
This is I want to leave you with
  • 15:13 - 15:15
and it seems like some of the others here,
  • 15:15 - 15:18
they took you in the same direction.
  • 15:18 - 15:20
One thing we know about God is this -
  • 15:20 - 15:22
and the Bible starts with this -
  • 15:22 - 15:30
    God created everything.
  • 15:30 - 15:32
"Have you not known? Have you not heard?
  • 15:32 - 15:34
The Lord is the everlasting God,
  • 15:34 - 15:35
    the Creator..."
  • 15:35 - 15:38
This comes up so much in your Bibles.
  • 15:38 - 15:41
"...The Creator of the ends of the earth.
  • 15:41 - 15:43
    He does not faint or grow weary;
  • 15:43 - 15:45
    His understanding is unsearchable."
  • 15:45 - 15:46
    Watch this.
  • 15:46 - 15:55
    This just takes you quickly
    through the six days.
  • 15:55 - 15:58
    You know what?
  • 15:58 - 16:05
    God created it all.
  • 16:05 - 16:07
    Think about it.
  • 16:07 - 16:09
    He created those apples.
  • 16:09 - 16:10
You saw a picture of apples.
  • 16:10 - 16:13
You know why He created those?
  • 16:13 - 16:16
    For you to eat.
  • 16:16 - 16:18
You know what the Bible says?
  • 16:18 - 16:24
    That God shows you kindness.
  • 16:24 - 16:31
Because the Lord would have you
  • 16:31 - 16:35
    to repent, trust Christ.
  • 16:35 - 16:39
But I want you to know, this God,
  • 16:39 - 16:42
    He's big. He's great.
  • 16:42 - 16:44
You can't put Him on that screen.
  • 16:44 - 16:46
You can show pictures of what He created,
  • 16:46 - 16:49
but I can't put a picture of God up there.
  • 16:49 - 16:52
There is no picture of God.
  • 16:52 - 16:57
    The picture of God is
    found in your Bibles.
  • 16:57 - 16:58
It tells us all about Him.
  • 16:58 - 17:01
If you want to learn about this God,
  • 17:01 - 17:05
you don't go look in a book at pictures.
  • 17:05 - 17:07
You go look in your Bible
  • 17:07 - 17:10
and you read about what it says about Him.
  • 17:10 - 17:13
And this is one of the first
things that it says about Him:
  • 17:13 - 17:18
    "In the beginning, God created
  • 17:18 - 17:22
    the heavens and the earth."
  • 17:22 - 17:25
    Our God is the Creator.
  • 17:25 - 17:28
    And so that's what I
    want to leave you with.
  • 17:28 - 17:30
    Okay?
  • 17:30 - 17:35
    Let's pray.
  • 17:35 - 17:43
Father, I pray that these children
  • 17:43 - 17:47
would have their minds opened up
  • 17:47 - 17:52
    to behold greatness, glory.
  • 17:52 - 18:00
    Father, we don't grasp,
  • 18:00 - 18:04
and how much we desire to have You
  • 18:04 - 18:08
    open up the eyes and
    the hearts of our children
  • 18:08 - 18:10
    to recognize the greatness.
  • 18:10 - 18:12
    We know what they're
    going to be attacked with.
  • 18:12 - 18:15
We know that the schools and the colleges
  • 18:15 - 18:17
and the very mindset of the world,
  • 18:17 - 18:19
    the worldviews around us
  • 18:19 - 18:22
    that proclaim evolution
  • 18:22 - 18:25
    and they dishonor You
  • 18:25 - 18:29
and they spit at Your glory.
  • 18:29 - 18:32
    Lord, we know You created.
  • 18:32 - 18:37
Lord, we know that our views of You
  • 18:37 - 18:41
    are yet too small.
  • 18:41 - 18:47
And we hear those words ring out to Job:
  • 18:47 - 18:50
"Where you there when I laid
    the foundations of the world?
  • 18:50 - 18:55
If you were, if you have understanding..."
  • 18:55 - 18:57
    But we weren't there.
  • 18:57 - 18:59
We weren't there, but we can behold.
  • 18:59 - 19:01
We can see what You've done.
  • 19:01 - 19:03
And we know that You are a God
  • 19:03 - 19:04
    who does love sinners
  • 19:04 - 19:06
    and we're thankful for that.
  • 19:06 - 19:08
    I pray for these children.
  • 19:08 - 19:10
    Lord, in Your kindness,
  • 19:10 - 19:12
open their eyes to behold Your glory.
  • 19:12 - 19:16
I pray in Christ's name, Amen.
