The Egyptian myth of Isis and the seven scorpions
-
0:11 - 0:17A woman in rags emerged from the swamp
flanked by seven giant scorpions. -
0:17 - 0:22Carrying a baby, she headed
for the nearest village to beg for food. -
0:22 - 0:24She approached a magnificent mansion,
-
0:24 - 0:28but the mistress of the house
took one look at her grimy clothes -
0:28 - 0:32and unusual companions
and slammed the door in her face. -
0:32 - 0:37So she continued down the road
until she came to a cottage. -
0:37 - 0:40The woman there took pity on the stranger
and offered her what she could: -
0:40 - 0:44a simple meal and a bed of straw.
-
0:44 - 0:47Her guest was no ordinary beggar.
-
0:47 - 0:51She was Isis,
the most powerful goddess in Egypt. -
0:51 - 0:54Isis was in hiding from her brother Set,
-
0:54 - 0:59who murdered her husband and wanted
to murder her infant son, Horus. -
0:59 - 1:03Set was also a powerful god,
and he was looking for them. -
1:03 - 1:07So to keep her cover,
Isis had to be very discreet— -
1:07 - 1:09she couldn’t risk using her powers.
-
1:09 - 1:11But she was not without aid.
-
1:11 - 1:14Serket, goddess of venomous creatures,
-
1:14 - 1:20had sent seven of her fiercest servants
to guard Isis and her son. -
1:20 - 1:24As Isis and Horus settled
into their humble accommodation, -
1:24 - 1:29the scorpions fumed at how the wealthy
woman had offended their divine mistress. -
1:29 - 1:34They all combined their venom
and gave it to one of the seven, Tefen. -
1:34 - 1:38In the dead of night,
Tefen crept over to the mansion. -
1:38 - 1:39As he crawled under the door,
-
1:39 - 1:42he saw the owner’s young son
sleeping peacefully -
1:42 - 1:45and gave him a mighty sting.
-
1:45 - 1:49Isis and her hostess were soon awakened
by loud wailing. -
1:49 - 1:52As they peered out of the doorway
of the cottage, -
1:52 - 1:54they saw a mother running
through the street, -
1:54 - 1:57weeping as she cradled her son.
-
1:57 - 2:00When Isis recognized the woman
who had turned her away, -
2:00 - 2:03she understood what her
scorpions had done. -
2:03 - 2:09Isis took the boy in her arms
and began to recite a powerful spell: -
2:09 - 2:13"O poison of Tefen, come out of him
and fall upon the ground! -
2:13 - 2:18Poison of Befen, advance not,
penetrate no farther, come out of him, -
2:18 - 2:21and fall upon the ground!
-
2:21 - 2:26For I am Isis, the great Enchantress,
the Speaker of spells. -
2:26 - 2:31Fall down, O poison of Mestet!
Hasten not, poison of Mestetef! -
2:31 - 2:39Rise not, poison of Petet and Thetet!
Approach not, poison of Matet!" -
2:39 - 2:45With each name she invoked,
that scorpion’s poison was neutralized. -
2:45 - 2:48The child stirred,
and his mother wept with gratitude -
2:48 - 2:51and lamented her earlier callousness,
-
2:51 - 2:56offering all her wealth
to Isis in repentance. -
2:56 - 2:59The woman who had taken Isis in
watched in awe— -
2:59 - 3:02she had had no idea who she’d brought
under her roof. -
3:02 - 3:05And from that day on,
-
3:05 - 3:08the people learned to make a poultice
to treat scorpion bites, -
3:08 - 3:13speaking magical incantations
just as the goddess had.
