DISABILITY | How You See Me

  • 0:00 - 0:03
Female 1: I feel so blessed
to be able to just live my
  • 0:03 - 0:06
life and have people be motivated by it.
  • 0:06 - 0:15
    [Music]
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    Female 2:
I have a spinal cord injury.
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    And so, when I
  • 0:18 - 0:22
was seeing people roll by I was like
  • 0:22 - 0:26
wow, so that's what I'm gonna look like
  • 0:26 - 0:30
    Female 3:
I think I always knew I was different.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
I knew other kids can hear and I can't
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    Female 4: I was born
    paralyzed I
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    was born with
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    Spina Bidfia. Um so,
    I've been paralyzed my
  • 0:37 - 0:39
whole life and its the only life I know.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    I had to kinda
    grow into learning I
  • 0:42 - 0:42
    was different.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    Female 1:
My biggest insecurity is my legs.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
So, I decided hey, if thats my biggest
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    insecurity, then I'm
gonna I'm gonna start a jean line.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
And all of the pictures are based around
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    my jeans
and my legs, and other peoples legs.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
And thats where I realized that
    its okay to be
  • 0:58 - 1:00
different. Because, once you embrace it
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    your entire world changes.
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    Male 1:
    People usually
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    they don't know how to
react to me a lot of times
  • 1:05 - 1:08
So like I'll make little jokes like,
  • 1:08 - 1:11
Hey calm down, it's okay. I'll be okay.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    Male 2: I would have
people treat me as if I wasn't
  • 1:13 - 1:15
really there. And I would have people
  • 1:15 - 1:17
treat me like they didn't want anything
  • 1:17 - 1:19
to do with me, and perhaps
    its because they
  • 1:19 - 1:21
were scared. And they didn't know any
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    other response.
  • 1:23 - 1:27
Female 1: One of my favorite
    things is when I'm out
  • 1:27 - 1:30
in public and i have all my girls with me
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    who are all in chairs.
    Who are all gorgeous.
  • 1:33 - 1:38
    And we literally love when
    we see heads, just turn.
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    Female 4: Society doesn't
    correlate disability and
  • 1:41 - 1:44
being attractive. We are beautiful people.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    [chuckling]
  • 1:45 - 1:46
Everyone is beautiful in their own way.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
    But, we can be stylish.
    We can be gorgeous.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
And stunning and fabulous, as I like to
  • 1:53 - 1:56
say. Because, yes I see myself as being
    fabulous
  • 1:56 - 1:58
Female 2: Being a dancer you know, once a
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    dancer always a dancer. I didn't stop
  • 2:00 - 2:03
So, I would go out to the
clubs and I would get my
  • 2:03 - 2:07
boogie on. And I was surprised by how
  • 2:07 - 2:10
guys would approach me and be like
  • 2:10 - 2:12
hey you're hot and they wouldn't say
  • 2:12 - 2:15
your still hot, they would say you're hot
  • 2:15 - 2:17
Male 2: There is the black and white, there is the
  • 2:17 - 2:20
bad and theres good. So as long as your
  • 2:20 - 2:23
focusing on the good, then the bad just
    seems to melt away.
  • 2:23 - 2:27
Female 1: We're only given one
life, and you gotta be proud of it.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    Female 2:
you want me to bust a couple of moves?
  • 2:32 - 2:36
    [inaudible] what oh
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    [inaudible]
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    [laughing]
director: Perfect Lets get a cut
  • 2:41 - 2:59
    [Music]
