DAY 26 - Visiting more "Dodgy Stations"!

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 0:08 - 0:11
GLOVESTRAINS: And again, I have just
    checked the timetable for Eastrington
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    (WIND NOISE)
because it is a dodgy station.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    Hey, everyone! GLovesTrains 'ere.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    And welcome to "Exploring Yorkshire
    and the Humber by Train"
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    day 26.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    Now, don't worry,
we've not suddenly jumped into winter.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    (SEAGULLS CALL)
It's still summer, would you believe.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    "What summer?"
I know. Tell me about it.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    But I've just had
    an overnight stay at Hull,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
and it is really early in the morning.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    I'm off to Howden,
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    Wressle and Eastrington.
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    Yeah, only three stations,
  • 0:44 - 0:45
but two of them are dodgy ones.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
Hence why I've gotten up so early.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
I am just outside of Hull station now,
  • 0:50 - 0:52
so I'm gonna make my way in there
and get on the first train.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
  • 1:01 - 1:02
G: I'm in me favourite seat.
  • 1:02 - 1:03
I always come for this one
    by the toilet.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    I've just had a look,
    it's seat 72.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    I am on 185142.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    And do you know what,
I'm not even feeling tired at all.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    Like usually I do, but...
  • 1:12 - 1:13
with getting up at half past three
    this morning,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
like I am so awake right now.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
I mean the effects of that
might kick in a little bit later on.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
Because I have yet to have
    a morning coffee.
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    Not sure where I'm gonna
    get one of those.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    And it's great as well
    to be able to actually
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    get to the first stop
    within half an hour.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    ANNOUNCEMENT:
    '4:59 Transpennine Express service
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    'through to Liverpool Lime Street.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    'Calling at Brough, Gilberdyke,
    Howden, Selby, Leeds...'
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    G: I'm at Howden.
And I am very happy to see
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    that at twenty-five past five
    in the morning
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    it's already become so light!
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    I was taken by surprise,
    pulling in...
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    Well I mean,
    I saw it yesterday actually,
  • 1:52 - 1:53
but it kind of slipped my mind.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    But Howden does have
    staggered platforms.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    And...
(SINGS) ♫ When you're at Howden
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    ♫ You put your knickers
    on your head
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    ♫ You put your
    knickers on your head
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    ♫ You put your knickers
    on your head
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    ♫ When you're at Howden
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    ♫ You put your knickers
    on your head
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    ♫ And you shout ♫
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    (SHOUTS) Squishy boobies!
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    Got a little sunrise
    over there as well.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
I'm not too sure why my big toe
is feeling wet, at the moment.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    Like it's not even raining
    or anything.
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    I don't know. Anyways...
    (LAUGHS)
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    I am intrigued by
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    (COCKEREL CROWS)
    this station building
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    in like sort of
the middle of the platforms here
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    with the old signage.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
Not too sure what that's used for
    at the minute.
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    At Howden, of course
    we've got two platforms.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
It is run by Northern Trains.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    You've also got TPE and
Hull Trains that serve the station.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
We've got plenty of cycle storage space.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    There's one-way facing
    information displays.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    There is a level crossing
    between the platforms here.
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    And some modern shelters.
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
    (TRAIN WHIZZES PAST)
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    Just seen this poster here
at the end of the platform as well,
  • 3:01 - 3:04
saying that Hull Trains have actually
    improved Howden station.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
And looking at these photos as well,
  • 3:06 - 3:08
I definitely can tell the difference.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    The platforms now,
    they do look very fresh.
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    Okay, turns out the floor
    may have been
  • 3:22 - 3:23
wetter than I thought it was
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    'cause I was leaving footprints.
    I think it's like,
  • 3:25 - 3:28
is it called dew or something like that?
    Anyways...
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    Just seen as well
    that the station building
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    is labelled with "Station House."
  • 3:31 - 3:33
And it is a private residence.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    I am just having
a little walk up the road...
  • 3:36 - 3:39
I think we're about to walk along
    a grassy pavement.
  • 3:39 - 3:40
That's gonna make my big toe
    even wetter.
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 3:47 - 3:49
My shoes are now covered in wet grass.
  • 3:49 - 3:50
    But anyways,
I've just come to have a look
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    at Howden Windmill.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
Which is situated next to this lake.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
And it's made even more picturesque
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    by the beautiful sunrise.
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
    G: I'm on 170474.
  • 4:04 - 4:05
    I honestly did not expect
  • 4:06 - 4:08
to be on a 170 right now.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    I don't know what I expected
    this unit to be,
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    (ANNOUNCEMENTS IN BACKGROUND)
    but just...oh, we're nearly there.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
(LAUGHS) But just a smaller unit,
    to be honest, with Wressle...
  • 4:16 - 4:17
..seeing a low frequency of service.
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    But yeah, lovely surprise
    being on a 170.
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    I'm at Wressle.
  • 4:26 - 4:27
    Wressle is a Northern-only station
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    and it's got two platforms.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    And if only Hull Trains
    called 'ere as well,
  • 4:31 - 4:34
because they could sort the floor
    of platform 2 out.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    It's full of stones and
    plants growing all along it.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    But platform 1,
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    which is the next platform
    I'm gonna be going off,
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    (LAUGHS) does have like...
    the standard platform floor!
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
    (TRAIN WHIZZES PAST)
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    Whilst I mentioned
frequency of service on the train,
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    I thought I'd just check
    how many trains
  • 4:52 - 4:53
actually call at Wressle a day.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    And it is seven.
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    I thought there'd be
the same amount of upwards trains
  • 4:57 - 4:59
as there would be downwards trains.
  • 4:59 - 5:00
But there are four trains to York
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    and three trains to Hull
    and that way.
  • 5:04 - 5:07
My next train, I have checked
    it is on time, thankfully.
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    Because honestly,
    I had no back-up plan
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    if one of my trains
    were cancelled today.
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    So yeah, happy days that
  • 5:13 - 5:14
it is going to plan so far.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    G: At Wressle,
    there's some basic shelters.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    There's a local area map.
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    There's a level crossing.
  • 5:25 - 5:29
    And there isn't, however,
    any information displays.
  • 5:29 - 5:30
I would have been very surprised,
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    to be honest with ya,
    if there were.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    (LAUGHS) But there's also
    no ticket buying facilities.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    It does say
    on a sign down there,
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    that you are able
    to purchase a ticket
  • 5:38 - 5:39
from the conductor on the train.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
    (TRAIN WHIZZES PAST)
  • 5:46 - 5:48
    I am glad there's a pavement here.
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    I am having a walk.
    I saw on the map
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    that there's a castle here.
    Wressle Castle.
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    Don't worry! I'm not gonna
    wrestle the castle.
  • 5:55 - 5:56
I am just gonna have a look at it.
  • 5:56 - 5:57
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    Okay, so you do get
a good view of the castle from here.
  • 6:05 - 6:07
And there is some information here
    about it.
  • 6:07 - 6:10
However, I can't seem to find
    a way actually
  • 6:10 - 6:12
to get any closer to the castle.
  • 6:12 - 6:14
    Which is a shame because
    I've actually got
  • 6:15 - 6:17
    like practically a two-hour wait
    at Wressle.
  • 6:17 - 6:20
    So I'ma have to find
    something else to do.
  • 6:20 - 6:22
I might end up just sitting in the station!
    (LAUGHS)
  • 6:22 - 6:24
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 6:29 - 6:30
The gates of the level crossing
  • 6:30 - 6:31
    (LEVEL CROSSING ALARM)
    are going down now.
  • 6:31 - 6:34
    I'm thinking it's because
my train's about to pull in.
  • 6:35 - 6:37
This train is gonna take me
    back down the line.
  • 6:37 - 6:38
    Calling at Howden and then
  • 6:38 - 6:41
    I'm getting off obviously
    at Eastrington.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
    I'm getting on 155347.
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 6:55 - 6:57
    Well, I'm really pleased
    that I got to ride
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    (WIND NOISE)
    on a Class 155 again.
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    I am gonna be riding
    that train back later.
  • 7:02 - 7:03
I do have the longest wait of the day
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    here at Eastrington.
  • 7:05 - 7:07
I have got about three hours here.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    But yeah,
    I am pretty confident
  • 7:09 - 7:11
    that I am gonna be
    making it home today!
  • 7:11 - 7:13
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 7:17 - 7:20
    Eastrington again
    is a very basic station.
  • 7:20 - 7:22
    (VOICE ECHOES)
We've got one of those oddly-shaped shelters.
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    Where my voice is slightly
    echoing from it right now.
  • 7:25 - 7:26
    Over on the other platform,
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    there is a basic shelter
    and a blue bench.
  • 7:29 - 7:31
    There's Northern Trains calling here.
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    And there's two platforms.
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 7:37 - 7:39
G: You can see some wind turbines
    from the station.
  • 7:39 - 7:42
And again, I have just checked
    the timetable for Eastrington
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    (WIND NOISE)
because it is a dodgy station.
  • 7:44 - 7:47
    And there are six trains
    that call here per day.
  • 7:47 - 7:49
    You've got two to Hull
  • 7:49 - 7:51
    and four to York.
  • 7:51 - 7:52
    You would have thought
    it would be
  • 7:52 - 7:54
    an even split between
    upwards and downwards services.
  • 7:54 - 7:56
    But yeah, it's not.
  • 7:56 - 7:57
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 8:02 - 8:03
I am off for a walk now.
  • 8:03 - 8:05
    I know, right?
Me off for a walk. Jeez.
  • 8:06 - 8:09
    But I am off to
    Eastrington Ponds Nature Reserve,
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    I think it's called.
  • 8:11 - 8:12
    It's about twenty minutes away.
  • 8:12 - 8:14
And again, I am happy to see
  • 8:14 - 8:16
    that there's pavements in Eastrington.
  • 8:16 - 8:18
    Well I say "pavements,"
    there's a pavement
  • 8:18 - 8:20
on this side of the road anyway.
    I hope it lasts!
  • 8:20 - 8:22
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 8:26 - 8:29
It is a lovely walk this.
    It's a really nice area.
  • 8:29 - 8:30
And I think I'm gonna have to
    take my coat off
  • 8:31 - 8:32
    at some point too.
  • 8:32 - 8:33
'Cause it is warming up a lot now.
  • 8:33 - 8:36
    (TRAFFIC NOISE)
But in walking through Eastrington 'ere,
  • 8:36 - 8:38
    I am wondering,
    the people who live here,
  • 8:39 - 8:40
where do they do their shopping?
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    Because there's a hairdressers,
  • 8:42 - 8:43
    there's a pub, there's a cafe.
  • 8:44 - 8:45
But I don't see any shops anywhere.
  • 8:46 - 8:47
    I mean,
at least they've got those things,
  • 8:47 - 8:48
    but yeah,
  • 8:49 - 8:50
they must have to travel out
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    (LAUGHS)
    somewhere to do their shopping.
  • 8:52 - 8:53
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 9:05 - 9:07
    Well, I've found the lake.
  • 9:07 - 9:09
And I think I'm gonna be
spending the rest of my time
  • 9:09 - 9:10
    at Eastrington here.
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    It is absolutely beautiful.
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    I was hoping there'd be
    some seating areas around here.
  • 9:14 - 9:17
    Immediately in stepping into
    the nature reserve,
  • 9:17 - 9:18
I was greeted by a bench.
  • 9:18 - 9:20
So I'm very happy to see that.
  • 9:20 - 9:22
I think I'm gonna go have a walk
    around the lake.
  • 9:22 - 9:24
    Might be some more
    benches around there.
  • 9:24 - 9:25
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 9:35 - 9:37
Well, what a wonderful way to end
  • 9:37 - 9:38
    a quick and short day.
  • 9:38 - 9:41
And a very beautiful one as well.
  • 9:41 - 9:42
The main aim for me today
  • 9:42 - 9:44
was to get them dodgy stations done.
  • 9:44 - 9:47
    So I am happy
    that everything went to plan.
  • 9:47 - 9:49
And from my early start this morning
  • 9:49 - 9:51
and my lack of coffee like,
  • 9:51 - 9:53
I am still not tired at all.
  • 9:53 - 9:55
I am very awake right now.
  • 9:55 - 9:57
    Thank you very much
    for watching, everyone.
  • 9:57 - 9:59
    Byesie byes!
  • 9:59 - 10:00
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 10:08 - 10:10
    (MUSIC ENDS)
  • 10:10 - 10:12
    Well, what a wonderful en...
  • 10:12 - 10:13
    Weh, weh, weh.
  • 10:13 - 10:15
    Well, what a wonderful en...
  • 10:15 - 10:16
    End to the... (LAUGHS)
  • 10:17 - 10:18
    Friggin' hell,
    I can't even speak now.
