Episode 07 - Micro Design - Top 10 Design Elements in Copenhagen's Bicycle Culture
-
0:00 - 0:03Top 10 Bicycle-Friendly Design Elements in Copenhagen
-
0:03 - 0:07Chapter 07: Micro design
-
0:09 - 0:14From an organism perspective, all aspects of design are important.
-
0:14 - 0:19Macro design, the entire infrastructural network, bridges over the harbour for bicycle and pedestrians.
-
0:19 - 0:24But also micro design just as important, and in many ways, it's these tiny details
-
0:24 - 0:29on the road landscape that are most interesting and quite often the most fun.
-
0:35 - 0:39Trademarks of Copenhagen at the moment is innovation.
-
0:39 - 0:48Thinking differently about now, we can use micro design to broadcast the message or to be more helpful to people who ride bicycles.
-
0:49 - 0:51bicycle ramps
-
0:51 - 0:56Now every train station in Denmark has elevators for baby carriages and bicycles and wheelchairs,
-
0:56 - 0:59but on the stairs, you often see at little ramp.
-
0:59 - 1:04It makes easier for the cyclist come up and down the stairway. It has very important accessibility function,
-
1:04 - 1:09but it's a great example of micro design, it's an addition to the existing stairway.
-
1:10 - 1:11Bicycle counters
-
1:11 - 1:14PeopIe in Copenhagen, they don't know how amazing they are, you know,
-
1:14 - 1:18in the global perspective, they just go from A2B and back again,
-
1:18 - 1:20and so they do everything and they don't think they do anything special.
-
1:20 - 1:25But having the counter there, you can see that, wait a minute,
-
1:25 - 1:291,7 million people riging bicycle passed this point this year.
-
1:29 - 1:32You know, we don't know how many people are riding bicycles in Copenhagen.
-
1:32 - 1:36You see a number on it, it really makes you feel proud, makes you feel amazed
-
1:36 - 1:41that so many people ride bicycles, which also encourages, more people will do so.
-
1:42 - 1:44Trash bin for cyclists
-
1:45 - 1:48One of the ideas that we had, here at the company, a few years ago,
-
1:48 - 1:53we suggested to the city of Copenhagen that they have the garbage cans on the street
-
1:53 - 1:56along service track of cycle track, why don' they tilt them?
-
1:56 - 1:59Redesigned this little tilt towards people riding bicycles because,
-
1:59 - 2:04when you use your bicycle all day, every day, you often have garbage to throw off.
-
2:05 - 2:07Conversation lanes
-
2:07 - 2:12On certain sections of the city's cycletrack network, now on the very wide sections,
-
2:12 - 2:18we see some small arrows, positioned off to the left of the middle of the cycletrack.
-
2:18 - 2:25Now the city of Copenhagen wanted to think about this concept of conversation lanes.
-
2:25 - 2:28And this has really become a goal for the bicycle office here,
-
2:28 - 2:31is to have space enough on every cycle track for two people having conversation
-
2:31 - 2:36on the bicycles and still have room at the left for some rider to overtake them.
-
2:37 - 2:39Railings for cyclists
-
2:39 - 2:45One of more interesting I think, and funny additions to the bicycle culture here is,
-
2:45 - 2:47that the city of Copenhagen has put up a railing.
-
2:47 - 2:51So that while you are waiting at the red light, you just can hold on the railing,
-
2:51 - 2:53you don't have to get off your seat, which is always irritating, when you are on the bicycle.
-
2:53 - 2:59You don't have to put the foot down, you just hold on the railing or put your foot on the footrest.
-
2:59 - 3:07And the text on mini the footrest is: "Hi cyclist, rest your foot here and thank you for cycling in the city"
-
3:07 - 3:12This is a behavioral template that we designed for the City of Copenhagen's Bicycle office.
-
3:12 - 3:18A very human little touch, it's a pat on the back if you like, to the people who ride bicycle every day.
