World Without Teachers

  • 0:01 - 0:04
    [Laughter]
That's what you're gonna ask her too?
  • 0:05 - 0:06
    Um...
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    That's a hard question.
  • 0:09 - 0:10
    Uh....
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    A world without teachers?
  • 0:14 - 0:17
What would the world be like
    without teachers?
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    Chaos.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    Sad.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    Because I won't learn anything.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    The younger generation wouldn't have
anyone to look up to, to learn from.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    Walk around ignorant.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    We could keep the teachers
    but just not homework.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    Everyone would be going cuckoo
    and we wouldn't know anything.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    That is the scariest thought
    that anyone could ever have.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
I think it would be craziness
just because I think besides parents
  • 0:46 - 0:50
Teachers are the first people we meet
    who shape who we become.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
I haven't always been like the best student
    throughout my whole life.
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    I was always in trouble.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    I had suffered three Fs
    and I realized, like woah,
  • 0:57 - 0:59
I need to fix that, you know?
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    Fourth grade was over.
    Fifth grade, we graduated.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    Sixth grade. Hi Mrs. Gonzalez.
    How are you doing?
  • 1:04 - 1:08
She said I heard these were your grades.
What's going on in that science class?
  • 1:09 - 1:13
She was like totally keeping up
and I just felt like, Woah,
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    Something is different about that.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
Gave me the time of day, mostly.
He was very engaged in what I was doing
  • 1:23 - 1:25
Even though I was in detention
    I was still learning.
  • 1:26 - 1:30
She was the one teacher who really saw
    a lot in me.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
She made me feel like I wasn't the kid
    that the other teachers described.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
And there was a point when I said okay
I'm going to fail my French class
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    Because I haven't been there.
    I haven't done any homework.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
I'm just going to drop out before I fail.
And then she specifically came to me
  • 1:44 - 1:47
And said, No, I'm going to work out a deal
with you so that if you stay
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    You won't fail.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
If we didn't do good in school
    she would chew you out.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
But she would always give you
a chance to make it up.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    You know what I mean?
She would never put you in low standards
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    and leave you there.
That's one thing I like about teachers
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    They won't leave you behind.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
When I got accepted into colleges
The first thing I thought is
  • 2:11 - 2:15
I'd better go and tell her
Guess what! I got into Penn State
  • 2:16 - 2:19
I got into UC. I got into all these colleges.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    Actually, it inspired me
    to pursue political science.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
She was basically the one who taught me
    to keep trying.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
I can accomplish more than I probably
    think I can.
  • 2:27 - 2:31
I really felt like she didn't have to do that
    but it made the difference.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
    You see I'm getting emotional.
    Because she's great, you know.
  • 2:37 - 2:42
    [Starting to cry...]
Give me a minute. [Walks away]
  • 2:43 - 2:50
    [Music in background.]
  • 2:55 - 2:59
I wouldn't be here without her.
I'd like to thank her so much for that.
  • 2:59 - 3:03
    Thanks, Ms. Victor.
Hope you see this and I hope you know that
  • 3:04 - 3:08
You mean a lot to me
    You're really important.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
What was your teacher's name again?
    Miss Marabelle.
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    It's Mr. Elmore.
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    Adam Esperida.
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    Miss Harris.
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    Her name was Casey Crocker.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    She just exhibited like
such a raw passion for teaching.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
It made me want to teach.
I want to do that for people.
  • 3:25 - 3:29
    That's a beautiful thing.
    Sweet.

This Teacher Appreciation Month, we want to honor the teachers around the world. They not only taught us the fundamentals of our education - reading, writing, mathematics - but also became our role models and inspiration for life. It's no doubt that teachers have had a profound impact on our lives. This month, as students are graduating and finishing up the school year, Jubilee Project is proud to share with you "World Without Teachers" a short video that takes a moment to look back on the teachers in our lives and how they have shaped who we are.

Subtitles in English by Susan Ramsey.

Everybody knows that teachers make a huge difference in our lives. Yet less than 10% of top-tier undergrads express any interest in teaching as a career. Without more young people going into the field of education, it is a real possibility that some children will grow up without the impactful influence of great teachers in their lives.

Jubilee Project is proud to partner with Participant Media's TEACH campaign to encourage passionate, creative, innovative young people to consider teaching as a career. Together, let's help build a world where every student has a great teacher to guide them along the way.

*Special thanks to everybody to shared their stories with us.*
