  • 0:58 - 1:00
    [rooster crowing]
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    [birds chirping]
  • 1:03 - 1:08
Once upon a time in the
    happy kingdom of Kapilavatsu,
  • 1:08 - 1:14
    King Suddhodana and Queen Maha
Maya found out that they were going
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    to have a baby.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    [birds chirping]
  • 1:17 - 1:22
    So the Queen decided to
    go to her father's house.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
On the way, they came to Lumbini Gardens,
  • 1:26 - 1:33
where she gave birth to a beautiful
baby boy whom they called Siddhartha.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    [baby cooing]
  • 1:40 - 1:45
Sadly, seven days later, the Queen died.
  • 1:49 - 1:54
    A wise man named
    Kaundinya told the King that,
  • 1:54 - 2:00
when Siddhartha grew up, he would see
things that would make him unhappy and
  • 2:00 - 2:04
cause him to leave for the forest.
  • 2:08 - 2:15
    The King therefore never allowed
Siddhartha to go outside the palace gates.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
Siddhartha was a bright and happy child
  • 2:24 - 2:29
who was very caring and gentle.
  • 2:29 - 2:35
    One day, Siddhartha and his
cousin Devadatta were taking a walk.
  • 2:39 - 2:44
    Devadatta suddenly spotted
a swan and shot it down.
  • 2:49 - 2:53
They then ran to see the wounded bird.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
    Siddhartha was horrified
    to see the wounded bird.
  • 2:58 - 3:03
He pulled out the arrow and
applied some herbs over the wound.
  • 3:11 - 3:15
    Devadatta insisted on
    keeping the bird for himself.
  • 3:15 - 3:21
So they went to the wise man of the court,
who declared that the swan belonged
  • 3:21 - 3:29
to the person who saved it, and not to the
person who tried to take its life away.
  • 3:34 - 3:38
    Siddhartha often sat by himself.
  • 3:41 - 3:48
One day, Siddhartha accompanied his father
to watch a bullfight, but after a while
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    he quickly slipped away.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
    He was later found
    meditating under the tree,
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    quiet and happy by himself.
  • 3:59 - 4:02
    [meditative music]
  • 4:04 - 4:09
The Prince grew up and became a young man.
  • 4:09 - 4:15
    King Suddhodana had gotten married
    to the beautiful Princess Yasodhara.
  • 4:33 - 4:38
But Siddhartha wasn't happy in the palace.
  • 4:43 - 4:47
One day he told his servant Channa,
  • 4:47 - 4:51
"Let's go for a ride outside the palace."
  • 4:54 - 4:59
    On the way, the prince
saw a man bent with age.
  • 5:00 - 5:04
    The Prince had never
    seen an old man before.
  • 5:06 - 5:09
"What is that?" he asked Channa.
  • 5:09 - 5:12
"That is an old man," said Channa.
  • 5:13 - 5:18
"We will all grow old one day, Prince."
  • 5:19 - 5:24
    The Prince was very upset
and went back to his palace.
  • 5:30 - 5:35
    After a few days,
    Siddhartha went out again.
  • 5:36 - 5:42
This time he saw a very sick man
who was crying out in pain.
  • 5:43 - 5:49
Siddhartha had never seen a sick
man before, and so he asked Channa,
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    "Why is that man crying?"
  • 5:53 - 5:59
"He is sick and is crying
    in pain," replied Channa.
  • 6:01 - 6:07
    Again, Siddhartha was very upset
    and went back the palace.
  • 6:12 - 6:14
The next time Siddhartha went out,
  • 6:14 - 6:19
he saw a group of people
    carrying a dead body.
  • 6:27 - 6:30
    Channa explained to Siddhartha
  • 6:30 - 6:38
that he was seeing a dead person
and said, "One day, we will all die."
  • 6:40 - 6:45
Siddhartha realized that his father had kept
him inside the palace to protect him
  • 6:45 - 6:48
    from these things.
  • 6:51 - 6:57
He asked himself, "Must we all
become old, fall sick, and die?
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    "Is there no other way?"
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    Siddhartha went out again.
  • 7:05 - 7:07
This time, he saw a man
  • 7:07 - 7:14
with a shaven head wearing orange
robes and carrying a bowl in his hand.
  • 7:14 - 7:17
    The man looked very content.
  • 7:18 - 7:24
    Siddhartha asked Channa,
    "Who is that man?"
  • 7:24 - 7:31
Channa said, "That is a wise man who has
left everything and gone to the forest
  • 7:31 - 7:33
    "to seek happiness."
  • 7:38 - 7:44
    Siddhartha thought over
all the things he had seen.
  • 7:52 - 7:56
He then decided to leave home
    in search of happiness.
  • 7:56 - 8:03
So one night, while his wife
and son Rahula were fast asleep,
  • 8:03 - 8:10
    Siddhartha, along with his faithful
servant Channa, quietly left the palace.
  • 8:14 - 8:19
    They traveled together until
    they crossed River Anoma.
  • 8:19 - 8:21
    [horse neighs]
  • 8:22 - 8:25
There, Siddhartha took off his royal robes.
  • 8:25 - 8:31
He gave his clothes and his horse
to Channa to take back to the palace.
  • 8:34 - 8:41
He then put on an orange robe, cut off his
long hair, and set out with a bowl in hand.
  • 8:43 - 8:50
Siddhartha went from teacher to teacher,
asking "Do you know the way to happiness?"
  • 8:50 - 8:53
    But nobody would tell him.
  • 8:55 - 9:03
Finally, he sat under a bodhi tree
and tried to find the answer himself.
  • 9:07 - 9:10
Many days later, his quest ended.
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    [chiming]
  • 9:12 - 9:17
He had now become a wise man, and
    people called him "Gautama Buddha."
  • 9:23 - 9:29
    Buddha loved all animals and
    treated them with compassion.
  • 9:33 - 9:39
    Once, his jealous cousin Devadatta
sent wild elephants to attack Buddha.
  • 9:39 - 9:42
    [elephants trumpet]
  • 9:43 - 9:49
    However, on seeing Buddha, the
    elephants bowed down before him.
  • 9:56 - 10:00
    Gautama Buddha had many disciples.
  • 10:00 - 10:05
He went from place to place
teaching people what he had learned.
  • 10:05 - 10:10
    His students lived in
    groups called "sangha."
  • 10:10 - 10:12
He preached that one could attain
  • 10:12 - 10:20
happiness by being content with what one
had and showing compassion to all beings.
  • 10:22 - 10:25
    When Buddha returned to Kapilavastu,
  • 10:25 - 10:32
his father, wife, and son, along with
    many others, became his disciples.
  • 10:34 - 10:36
One of his relatives, called Ananda,
  • 10:36 - 10:42
    became Buddha's faithful disciple and
took care of him when he grew old.
  • 10:43 - 10:47
Buddha preached for another 45 years.
  • 10:48 - 10:52
    By then, he had become
an old man of 80 years.
  • 10:55 - 11:00
    Finally, at a place called
    Kushinagar, he laid down
  • 11:00 - 11:05
    below the sala trees
    and breathed his last.
