The Japanese Love Industry

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    [MUSIC PLAYING]
  • 0:01 - 0:08
  • 0:08 - 0:11
RYAN DUFFY: So here in Tokyo,
    the girls, the nightlife,
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    the clubs, everything is
    controlled by those guys.
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    So they suggested
    to us that maybe we
  • 0:16 - 0:19
need to prove ourselves to them
in order to get to hang out
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    and to get that access.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
So here we are with a little bit
    of male bonding Yakuza style.
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    [MUSIC PLAYING]
  • 0:25 - 0:33
  • 0:33 - 0:35
So it wasn't too long ago
that Japan was a rising power
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    on the international stage.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    Now it has the steepest
    population decline
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    in the world.
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    And you wonder, well,
    why is that happening?
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    It's because people aren't
    spending any time together.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    They're not getting married,
    and they're not having babies.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    According to government surveys,
    nearly 50% of Japanese women,
  • 0:49 - 0:51
aged 18 to 34, are single.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
And more than 60% of men the
same age are single as well.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    MAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    MAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    WOMAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    RYAN DUFFY: Part of the
    equation is definitely
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    changing gender roles,
    which has created
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    a new generation of
    economically empowered women
  • 1:08 - 1:12
who no longer want to be tied
    down to housework or childcare.
  • 1:12 - 1:17
    WOMAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    WOMAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    RYAN DUFFY: Others blame
    the men, a generation
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    obsessed with virtual
    reality and so
  • 1:23 - 1:27
    intimidated by real women that
    they prefer cyber girlfriends
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    over real relationships.
  • 1:29 - 1:36
    MAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 1:36 - 1:42
    MAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    RYAN DUFFY: Now these are
    all interesting theories.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    But there's another one
    evident on the streets
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    of Yakuza controlled Tokyo.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    In a country that
    commidifies everything,
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    sex cells, and the
    Japanese are buying.
  • 1:53 - 1:58
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    Japan has a seemingly
    endless menu
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    of relationship
    replacement services,
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    where you can essentially
    replicate anything
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    you'd get from a relationship,
    be it sexual, emotional,
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    or otherwise, without actually
    having to have a boyfriend
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    or girlfriend.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    And now Japan is known
    at the graying nation.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    With more people over 65
    and less people under 15
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    than anywhere else
    in the world, Japan
  • 2:18 - 2:22
    has the fastest growing
    negative population on Earth.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    By the end of this
    century, Japan's population
  • 2:25 - 2:27
is expected to shrink by half.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    And believe it or
    not, the country
  • 2:29 - 2:33
    actually sells more adult
    diapers than baby diapers.
  • 2:33 - 2:38
    And the face of this
    decaying nation is this guy.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    He might look like a
    stripper, but he's not.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    He's what the
    Japanese call a host.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    And believe it or not,
    he's one of the reasons
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    why they aren't having babies.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    [CHEERING]
  • 2:51 - 2:54
So we're here at one of
    many host clubs in Tokyo,
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    where single women come, just
    like these women right here,
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    and get lavished with
    the kind of attention
  • 2:59 - 3:02
that they wouldn't get if they
went to just a typical bar.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    Instead of taking
    their chances dating,
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    more and more Japanese women
    are paying for companionship
  • 3:07 - 3:09
by coming to places like this.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    Host clubs charge by
    the hour, with prices
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    usually in the hundreds
    of dollars for nothing
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    more than conversation.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    When women sit down, what
    do they want from you?
  • 3:20 - 3:21
    Do they want to be
    lavished with attention?
  • 3:21 - 3:23
Do they just want you to listen?
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    Do they want you
    to touch their arm?
  • 3:25 - 3:30
    NAOKI KISHIDA:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 3:30 - 3:31
    RYAN DUFFY: Bullshit.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    MICHELLE PAYNE:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 3:34 - 3:41
    NAOKI KISHIDA:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 3:41 - 3:48
    MICHELLE PAYNE:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    RYAN DUFFY: $800,000 a year,
to sit here and listen to women
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    talk.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
    NAOKI KISHIDA:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    RYAN DUFFY: Normal
    for him maybe,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    but it's a pretty weird
    place to be hanging out.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    There's lots of
    flirting, and the girls
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    seem to be enjoying
    themselves, but nobody
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    is getting laid here.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    And the craziest part is
that no one seems to mind.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    We're not talking about
    cougars or misfits either.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    These are attractive,
    single women,
  • 4:12 - 4:15
mostly in their 20s and 30s,
    just like club regular Mayo.
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    You're single.
  • 4:16 - 4:16
    MAYO: Yes.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    RYAN DUFFY: And are you
    like actively looking
  • 4:18 - 4:20
for a boyfriend, or you don't
    want a boyfriend, or what's
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    your deal?
  • 4:21 - 4:22
    MAYO: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    MICHELLE PAYNE: She
    doesn't want a boyfriend.
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    Why?
  • 4:24 - 4:25
    RYAN DUFFY: Why not?
  • 4:25 - 4:33
    MAYO: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 4:33 - 4:33
    RYAN DUFFY: Right.
  • 4:33 - 4:41
    MICHELLE PAYNE:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 4:41 - 4:42
    No, it's not.
  • 4:42 - 4:58
    MAYO: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    RYAN DUFFY: And women aren't
    the only ones disillusioned
  • 5:01 - 5:02
    with love in Japan.
  • 5:02 - 5:05
    In Tokyo, there are more
    than 200 hostess clubs
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    for men, where a few
    hundred bucks can get you
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    all the female attention
    you could ever want.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    What are you expected
    to do for that hour
  • 5:14 - 5:17
with a guy who comes down and
plops down a bit of money?
  • 5:17 - 5:24
    WOMAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    RYAN DUFFY: But the host
    and hostess bars are just
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    the tip of the iceberg.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
In Japan today, there's a whole
    industry of pseudo romance
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    services to fit every need.
  • 5:33 - 5:37
If you like anime, you can pay
$70 an hour to go on a date
  • 5:37 - 5:40
with a girl dressed up like
    your favorite character.
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    Or maybe having sex with
    dolls is more your thing.
  • 5:42 - 5:45
    Thankfully, there's
    a guy for that, too.
  • 5:45 - 5:48
And if you just want to take the
day off and do some cuddling,
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    well, you're in luck.
  • 5:50 - 5:51
    Hi, how you doing?
  • 5:51 - 5:51
    Hello.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
  • 5:54 - 5:59
Oh, I just got a real strong
pang of not wanting to do this.
  • 5:59 - 6:03
    So we're here at a
    cuddle cafe in Tokyo.
  • 6:03 - 6:04
    These people have
    been kind enough
  • 6:04 - 6:08
to build what looks like a
    daycare center for toddlers,
  • 6:08 - 6:11
    where grownups can lie
    down and talk to strangers
  • 6:11 - 6:14
    about their feelings, which
    I'm about to do, reluctantly,
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    very, very, very reluctantly.
  • 6:16 - 6:18
    I want that on record.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
Let's see the menu of services.
  • 6:20 - 6:23
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    MAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 6:26 - 6:27
    RYAN DUFFY: OK
  • 6:27 - 6:34
    MAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    RYAN DUFFY: Why?
  • 6:35 - 6:37
Freud would have field day here.
  • 6:37 - 6:39
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    Hello.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    Great, hi.
  • 6:43 - 6:46
So I think I just want to get
    a little bit of everything,
  • 6:46 - 6:47
    like an appetizer platter.
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    SAKURA SERIZAWA: OK.
  • 6:49 - 6:51
    RYAN DUFFY: How
    does that work then?
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    Oh, very nice.
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    This looks very comfortable.
  • 6:53 - 6:54
    Thank you.
  • 6:54 - 6:57
    Do you have irregulars?
  • 6:57 - 7:05
    SAKURA SERIZAWA:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 7:05 - 7:07
    RYAN DUFFY: Oh, really?
  • 7:07 - 7:07
    What about you?
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    Do you have a boyfriend?
  • 7:09 - 7:11
    SAKURA SERIZAWA:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 7:11 - 7:12
    RYAN DUFFY: Of course not?
  • 7:12 - 7:13
    Why of course?
  • 7:13 - 7:16
    SAKURA SERIZAWA:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 7:16 - 7:17
    RYAN DUFFY: Do you
    ever want a boyfriend?
  • 7:17 - 7:22
Or do you think just stuff
    like this will suffice?
  • 7:22 - 7:26
    SAKURA SERIZAWA:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 7:26 - 7:27
    RYAN DUFFY: Wow.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    Oh, my god.
  • 7:29 - 7:33
    SAKURA SERIZAWA:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 7:33 - 7:35
    RYAN DUFFY: That's
    interesting for someone
  • 7:35 - 7:38
    who is affectionate to
    strangers for a living.
  • 7:38 - 7:42
    SAKURA SERIZAWA:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    RYAN DUFFY: OK.
  • 7:43 - 7:45
    I think I've had
    enough of the arm.
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    I think maybe we should
    elevate our relationship
  • 7:47 - 7:50
    to some kind of cosplay.
  • 7:50 - 7:53
    Maybe the French maid outfit.
  • 7:53 - 7:54
    Oh, that is very involved.
  • 7:54 - 7:56
    Looks Victorian, basically.
  • 7:56 - 8:00
We can do the, maybe the staring
    into each other's eyes thing.
  • 8:00 - 8:05
  • 8:05 - 8:08
    Nothing is weirder than this.
  • 8:08 - 8:12
    This is profoundly,
    profoundly disturbing.
  • 8:12 - 8:17
  • 8:17 - 8:20
    To culminate our
    time together, I
  • 8:20 - 8:22
    was hoping I could
    lie in your lap
  • 8:22 - 8:24
    while you pick ear
    wax out of my ears.
  • 8:24 - 8:27
  • 8:27 - 8:30
We're just adding a layer of,
    like, mom into the girlfriend.
  • 8:30 - 8:34
    So it's a mixture of a mom
    activity and girlfriend
  • 8:34 - 8:35
    activity.
  • 8:35 - 8:37
    She's really going
    to town in there.
  • 8:37 - 8:40
    I think we're probably clean.
  • 8:40 - 8:43
Either way, we should stop this,
    because it's freaking me out.
  • 8:43 - 8:44
    Ans she's cleaning my brain.
  • 8:44 - 8:46
Do you know what I owe
    you for everything?
  • 8:46 - 8:48
    SAKURA SERIZAWA:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 8:48 - 8:49
    RYAN DUFFY: 7,000 yen.
  • 8:49 - 8:52
    So, 7,000 yen?
  • 8:52 - 8:53
    Thank you, very much.
  • 8:53 - 8:57
    SAKURA SERIZAWA:
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 8:57 - 9:00
RYAN DUFFY: I've seen a lot
of perverse things in my life,
  • 9:00 - 9:03
    but this pseudo romance
    actually really got to me.
  • 9:03 - 9:06
We felt like it was time for
    something a bit more real.
  • 9:06 - 9:08
    And we knew exactly
    who could take us
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    from the pretend cuddling
    into the harder depths
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    of the illegal underworld.
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    Headed to meet the Yakuza.
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    I'm really looking
    forward to fearing
  • 9:16 - 9:20
for my life for a few hours
    and then having new friends.
  • 9:20 - 9:22
    The Yakuza are Japan's
    notoriously violent
  • 9:22 - 9:24
    organized crime syndicate.
  • 9:24 - 9:27
    And they're well-known for
    their disdain for Western media.
  • 9:27 - 9:29
    They've agreed to a
    rare dinner meeting
  • 9:29 - 9:31
    in the middle of
    Kabukicho, Tokyo's
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    notorious Red Light District.
  • 9:33 - 9:35
    If we wanted to see
    the real outer edges
  • 9:35 - 9:38
    of Japan's sex industry,
we'd come to the right place.
  • 9:38 - 9:43
  • 9:43 - 9:47
    MAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 9:47 - 9:49
    RYAN DUFFY: Cheers.
  • 9:49 - 9:51
    So I guess, kind of
    to jump right into it,
  • 9:51 - 9:53
    this is my first time
    in Japan, and one
  • 9:53 - 9:56
of the things that I think
    the Western world is most
  • 9:56 - 9:58
    fascinated by is this
    just sex culture thing,
  • 9:58 - 10:02
    the hostess bars, the rabbit
    hole of really weird shit
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    you can dive into.
  • 10:04 - 10:08
    How involved is the Yakuza
    in that particular industry?
  • 10:08 - 10:14
    MAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 10:14 - 10:17
    MAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 10:17 - 10:19
RYAN DUFFY: Oh, what is it?
  • 10:19 - 10:20
    What is this?
  • 10:20 - 10:21
    MAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 10:21 - 10:24
    RYAN DUFFY: Yeah, that one,
the thing in the bowl there,
  • 10:24 - 10:25
    very nice, thank you.
  • 10:25 - 10:26
    Is it good?
  • 10:26 - 10:28
    MAN: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 10:28 - 10:29
    RYAN DUFFY: Really?
  • 10:29 - 10:30
    MAN: [INAUDIBLE]
  • 10:30 - 10:33
    RYAN DUFFY: Oh, good god,
why did I smell it first?
  • 10:33 - 10:34
    That was just fucking stupid.
  • 10:34 - 10:38
  • 10:38 - 10:42
    OK, yeah.
  • 10:42 - 10:44
    After earning their
    trust, they agreed
  • 10:44 - 10:48
to show us some of the
    locals only services.
  • 10:48 - 10:50
    But they wouldn't tell me
    exactly what they had planned,
  • 10:50 - 10:55
just that I was to arrive at
    the Hyatt Hotel at midnight.
  • 10:55 - 11:00
    So I still don't know
    what we're doing.
  • 11:00 - 11:02
But I do know that it's not--
  • 11:02 - 11:04
    it's frowned upon,
    whatever it is.
  • 11:04 - 11:05
    So it's --
  • 11:05 - 11:06
    MICHELLE PAYNE:
    Somewhat illegal.
  • 11:06 - 11:07
    RYAN DUFFY: Somewhat illegal.
  • 11:07 - 11:08
    MICHELLE PAYNE: Mm hmm.
  • 11:08 - 11:09
    RYAN DUFFY: So it's
    shrouded in secrecy.
  • 11:09 - 11:10
    MICHELLE PAYNE: Mm hmm.
  • 11:10 - 11:13
RYAN DUFFY: And now we're going
    underground into a parking
  • 11:13 - 11:14
    garage beneath the hotel.
  • 11:14 - 11:16
    And we're going to
    have to hid the camera,
  • 11:16 - 11:18
and go up to some room,
    and wait for some person
  • 11:18 - 11:19
    to come do something
    that we don't
  • 11:19 - 11:21
know what they're going to do.
  • 11:21 - 11:27
  • 11:27 - 11:37
    YUI TOKUI: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 11:37 - 11:39
    RYAN DUFFY: Please
    don't hurt my balls.
  • 11:39 - 11:40
    I'm a fragile dude.
  • 11:40 - 11:43
  • 11:43 - 11:45
    That's fucking tight.
  • 11:45 - 11:45
    Ow.
  • 11:45 - 11:47
    YUI TOKUI: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 11:47 - 11:48
    RYAN DUFFY: That's my penis.
  • 11:48 - 11:56
    YUI TOKUI: [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 11:56 - 11:59
    RYAN DUFFY: OK, all
    right, all right.
  • 11:59 - 12:00
    I can't believe
    people pay for this.
  • 12:00 - 12:02
    Ow, holy fuck.
  • 12:02 - 12:04
    Ow.
  • 12:04 - 12:06
    Ow, god damn it.
  • 12:06 - 12:08
    [SPEAKING JAPANESE]
  • 12:08 - 12:10
    And as I crouched
    in this hotel room,
  • 12:10 - 12:13
    being whipped and
    humiliated, this whole idea
  • 12:13 - 12:16
    of a graying nation kind
    of really came into focus.
  • 12:16 - 12:19
    The host clubs, the
    cuddle cafes, and even
  • 12:19 - 12:22
    this fetish stuff,
    the Japanese, who
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    are so used to
    commodifying everything,
  • 12:24 - 12:27
    have managed to distill each
    part of a human relationship
  • 12:27 - 12:30
    into a buyable
    package, with dating,
  • 12:30 - 12:33
    marriage, and eventually
    babies falling by the wayside.
  • 12:33 - 12:36
  • 12:36 - 12:38
    [MUSIC PLAYING]
  • 12:38 - 13:17
Title:
The Japanese Love Industry
Description:

Japan is a country that is dying—literally. Japan has more people over the age of 65 and the smallest number of people under the age of 15 in the world. It has the fastest negative population growth in the world, and that's because hardly anyone is having babies. In these difficult times, the Japanese are putting marriage and families on the back burner and seeking recreational love and affection as a form of cheap escape with no strings attached. We sent Ryan Duffy to investigate this phenomenon, which led him to Tokyo's cuddle cafes and Yakuza-sponsored prostitution rings.
