Ukulele Lesson 11 - Movable Chord Shape 1 (UK-011)
-
0:05 - 0:06Hey how you doing.
-
0:06 - 0:08Justin here for another
ukulele lesson for you. -
0:08 - 0:12and today we are checking out
shape one of the -
0:12 - 0:13moveable chords.
-
0:13 - 0:16Okay, so. Hopefully by this
stage you're really hip with all of -
0:16 - 0:19the open chord shapes on the uke that
we've covered so far in the course. -
0:19 - 0:22And now we're going to look at the
chord shapes that move -
0:22 - 0:24up and down the neck.
-
0:24 - 0:26Okay, and this particular one
that we're looking at today -
0:26 - 0:28I've called shape one.
-
0:28 - 0:32Now, the root note for that
is on the first string. Okay? -
0:32 - 0:36The one that start with the note A. Okay?
-
0:36 - 0:40So, you need to be familiar
with the notes on the first string. -
0:40 - 0:44Okay? Particularly the ones kind of
early on from the nut, -
0:44 - 0:47say the first 5/6 frets particularly. Ok?
-
0:47 - 0:48So let's get to a close up.
-
0:48 - 0:51Check out this chord and
what the root note is, -
0:51 - 0:54and see if we can't change the chords
around a little bit. -
0:54 - 0:58Okay, Here we are with the first of our
moveable chord shapes ... -
0:58 - 1:00for the ukulele.
-
1:00 - 1:02This one I call Shape One.
-
1:02 - 1:05We're going to start with the
third finger -
1:05 - 1:08on the fourth fret of the fourth string.
-
1:08 - 1:12Then we put the second finger down
in the third fret of the third string, -
1:12 - 1:17and we use our 1st finger
to cover 2 strings in the 2nd fret. -
1:17 - 1:20That'll be the 1st string and
the 2nd string on the 2nd fret. -
1:20 - 1:24Some people prefer to put the fingers
down in order, so 1st finger 1st, -
1:24 - 1:27doing a little mini-barré there,
2nd finger down on the 3rd fret -
1:27 - 1:32of the 3rd string, 3rd finger
down on the 4th fret of the 4th string. -
1:32 - 1:34♪
-
1:34 - 1:35That's what it sounds like.
-
1:35 - 1:37♪
-
1:37 - 1:40For those of you who're curious where it
comes from, if you remember our A chord, -
1:40 - 1:41♪
-
1:41 - 1:44Open chord, we've re-fingered that
using strings 2 and 3, -
1:44 - 1:47if we move that up one fret and then our
1st finger replaces the nut, -
1:47 - 1:48♪
-
1:48 - 1:51That's where we've got it!
So, that's (♪) A chord, -
1:51 - 2:00Up one fret from A chord would be
A sharp (♪), up one more would be B (♪) -
2:00 - 2:03And here is our root note.
So, that was the note A. -
2:03 - 2:04♪
-
2:04 - 2:11If we wanted to play a B chord,
- A, A#, B - (♪) -
2:11 - 2:13There's B, (♪),-
B chord! -
2:13 - 2:16What would it be if we move it up
one more fret? (♪) -
2:16 - 2:20What's this note here? (♪)
3rd fret of the thinnest string. -
2:20 - 2:27That would be the note C (♪)
So that would be a C chord (♪) -
2:27 - 2:29We already got a C chord like that.
But we can play it ( ♪) -
2:29 - 2:31It's another way of playing a C chord now,
-
2:31 - 2:34so, we could do that (♪), way, or that way (♪)
-
2:34 - 2:37Same chord. You can hear it sounds
slightly different, but it's essentially -
2:37 - 2:45the same chord. Anyone figure out where
we'd put it if we wanted to play a D# chord? -
2:45 - 2:53Think about it! So, we had an A there,
A#, B, C, C#, D, D# -
2:53 - 3:00Right up on the 6th fret (♪)
That's how we'd get our D# chord (♪) -
3:00 - 3:01Okay, so, make sure you get that!
-
3:01 - 3:08So we've got A,- would be the open chord,-
up one, A sharp/B flat, up another one B. -
3:08 - 3:17C, C sharp/D flat, D, D sharp/E flat, E.
-
3:17 - 3:21Okay, so it's a moveable chord shape.
-
3:21 - 3:24Very-very cool little idea, you'll learn
lots of different chords this way. -
3:24 - 3:29So, it get's cooler. 'cause that's the
major chord, ok? If I move it back to B. -
3:29 - 3:31So, 1st finger's in the 2nd fret.
-
3:31 - 3:32♪
-
3:32 - 3:35That's the major chord.
If we take off the 2nd finger, -
3:35 - 3:38and move the bar over, so it's covering now
-
3:38 - 3:433 strings, so we've got:
4th fret, 2nd fret, 2nd fret, 2nd fret. -
3:43 - 3:47Now I'm kind of moving my 2nd finger
other way, so you can see, I'd normally -
3:47 - 3:54just leave it hanging around.
Okay, so 4th fret, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd -
3:54 - 3:57That would be a B minor chord.
-
3:57 - 4:02Ok? So, major..minor...ok?
-
4:02 - 4:04Now, the same idea just moves around.
-
4:04 - 4:09So, if we wanted to say,
take it up to a D chord at the 5th fret, -
4:09 - 4:14that'll be a D major chord.
That'll be a D minor. -
4:14 - 4:19Ok? Major...minor...major...minor...
-
4:19 - 4:24Ok? So, if I wanted you to play a
B flat minor chord, you'd start with A, -
4:24 - 4:29find the root note first, so that'd be A,
A#/ B flat,- ok, there's the root note, -
4:29 - 4:32now, we know, that was the major shape,
oh, there's the minor shape! -
4:32 - 4:34There's B flat minor (♪)
-
4:34 - 4:38What, if we wanted to play a D flat minor?
-
4:38 - 4:47Ok, 1st of all, you find where the D is,
so, A, A sharp, B, C, C sharp, D, -
4:47 - 4:52Then we want a D flat,- we said,
D flat minor, so, D, flat, we put down the shape -
4:52 - 4:58and we want D flat minor.
So, we'd use that shape (♪) - Ok? -
4:58 - 5:00If you're really clever, you could 've gone
straight to the D flat, there, and then -
5:00 - 5:05put down the minor grip - ok?
So, a really good exercise is to try -
5:05 - 5:11playing a few songs, just using these shapes.
See, if you can find some tunes that -
5:11 - 5:19are just using these (♪)
-
5:19 - 5:22Ok? there's all sorts of different little
things that you can find that're just using -
5:22 - 5:25these one-shape kinda grips moving around.
-
5:25 - 5:29Ok, so, we've looked at major, and minor,
-
5:29 - 5:33There's also another really cool one
which is dominant 7 (♪) -
5:33 - 5:38Ok? So, we're just barring the whole neck now.
Ok? So, this is more like a proper barré chord -
5:38 - 5:43that we'd have on guitar; covering all
4 strings with the 1st finger, -
5:43 - 5:48and then we add the 2nd finger
in the 3rd fret of the 3rd string. -
5:48 - 5:49♪
-
5:49 - 5:522-3-2-2
-
5:52 - 5:54Root note's still here, this would be a B7.
-
5:54 - 5:58♪
-
5:58 - 6:04If we wanted a D7:
ok, find B, C, C sharp, D. -
6:04 - 6:05Put the shape down!
-
6:05 - 6:07♪
-
6:07 - 6:10Ok? it's really important that you
get used to this idea of finding -
6:10 - 6:14the root note on the thinnest string and
then putting down the appropriate shape. -
6:14 - 6:18Either major, minor, or 7.
-
6:20 - 6:23It's very likely, that learning these
moveable shapes on the uke are -
6:23 - 6:26a little bit more challenging then
the regular open chords and require -
6:26 - 6:29a little bit more finger strength,
but it's just practice! -
6:29 - 6:33Particularly on ukulele, the fact that
strings are nice and soft and you don't -
6:33 - 6:37usually have to press'em down too hard,
should make it relatively easy. -
6:37 - 6:39It's definitely not as difficult as learning
barré chords on the guitar. -
6:39 - 6:43The big deal is, making sure that you know
those root notes. 'Cause without knowing the -
6:43 - 6:45root notes, the notes on that thinnest string,
-
6:45 - 6:48you're not gonna be able to use these shapes.
-
6:48 - 6:51But what this has done, in case you hadn't realised,-
is given you a whole lotta chords. -
6:51 - 6:56You've got 3 chords on each different fret
that you know know, a maj. chord, a min.chord -
6:56 - 7:00and a dominant 7th on every fret,
all the way up, as far as you can get -
7:00 - 7:03your fingers still in the frets - ok?
That's a whole lot of chords. -
7:03 - 7:08I don't know exactly how many, but a LOT.
Depends on, I guess, how far up the neck -
7:08 - 7:11you feel like you can get to.
But this gives you access now to -
7:11 - 7:16all of those chords that you couldn't
play before. if you see C#min. or E flat7 -
7:16 - 7:19or whatever, these kind of chords that you
might not have been able to play in an -
7:19 - 7:22open position, you can now play them
using this shape one. -
7:22 - 7:26There's five shapes alltogether.
But this particular shape is the one that -
7:26 - 7:30I recommend you spend quite a bit of time
with first-ok? And it's got that root note -
7:30 - 7:34on the thinnest string, which is in
some instances is the easiest string -
7:34 - 7:38to remember the note names of - ok?
So, get to grips with that solidly first, -
7:38 - 7:41before you even think about learning
more shapes, but when you're ready, -
7:41 - 7:44join me for the next one, and we're gonna
be looking at Shape Two! -
7:44 - 7:45Take care of yourselves!
Bye-bye!
