What place do you want to have in the world? |Camila Agone | TEDxSãoPaulo
-
0:06 - 0:08What place do you want
to have in the world? -
0:08 - 0:11Have you ever asked yourself
this question? -
0:11 - 0:14At some point in high school,
my history professor, -
0:14 - 0:18who was also teaching on life project,
asked me this question, -
0:18 - 0:21"What's the place you want
to occupy in the world?" -
0:21 - 0:22I didn't know the answer.
-
0:22 - 0:25I couldn't imagine that thinking about it
-
0:25 - 0:30could disclose such possibilities
of growth and future. -
0:31 - 0:33I come from a very poor family,
-
0:33 - 0:37most of them coming from Rondônia,
where they worked in the fields. -
0:37 - 0:40And, when I was around one,
they came to São Paulo. -
0:40 - 0:43In spite of all the difficulties
my family faced everyday, -
0:43 - 0:46they always insisted
in giving me the best. -
0:46 - 0:48and they've always given me
all the support I needed. -
0:48 - 0:52I have to thank them for everything.
-
0:52 - 0:53Near my house,
-
0:53 - 0:57there was a school where I started
my primary school classes. -
0:57 - 1:01That school was considered
the worst school of my area. -
1:01 - 1:04Most professors were not reliable,
-
1:04 - 1:08classes were canceled,
and there was general disinterest. -
1:08 - 1:11Of course, I wasn't remotely motivated.
-
1:11 - 1:14When time came to go
to the secondary school, -
1:14 - 1:17A new school appeared,
next to the other one, -
1:17 - 1:20a full-time school called Jardim Riviera.
-
1:20 - 1:22I've always liked studying,
-
1:22 - 1:25but most of my friends
were still in the old school. -
1:25 - 1:28So I wondered: should I go or not?
-
1:28 - 1:32And then there was my mother,
who wanted me heaps to go, -
1:32 - 1:34saying that I had to make a change.
-
1:34 - 1:39I changed school,
and, consequently, my life changed. -
1:40 - 1:44The new school was public too,
but it was far better. -
1:44 - 1:48And, from the very beginning,
I felt welcome in the extreme. -
1:48 - 1:52There I came across a project
called 'Protagonismo Juvenil', -
1:52 - 1:56that is a project in which young students
with academic distinction -
1:56 - 1:59have the opportunity
to influence other youth -
1:59 - 2:02and those youth disseminate
what they've learnt in their own schools. -
2:02 - 2:04During my secondary school years,
-
2:04 - 2:07I ended up being
one of the main representatives -
2:07 - 2:11of São Paulo State
in terms of juvenile protagonism. -
2:12 - 2:16Now, that project woke my proactive side.
-
2:16 - 2:18And as in the school there were
also elective courses, -
2:18 - 2:21the possibility to choose what I wanted
-
2:21 - 2:24made me decide to attend a course
called Pre-Induction Science Program. -
2:25 - 2:27Among the possible projects,
-
2:27 - 2:30working with plants was
one of the most reachable. -
2:30 - 2:33So, I walked to a park near my house
-
2:33 - 2:36and there I bumped into
a huge tree called 'embaúba' -
2:36 - 2:40that, according to conventional wisdom,
had catheterizing properties. -
2:41 - 2:45The embaúba is an endemic tree of Brazil.
-
2:45 - 2:48Everybody knows it,
it's a plant that has many properties. -
2:48 - 2:51Even people of my family knew it.
-
2:52 - 2:53Surfing the Internet,
-
2:53 - 2:55I saw that the hypothesis
-
2:55 - 2:58of the catheterizing property
was coming true. -
2:58 - 3:02But there was nothing scientific about it.
-
3:02 - 3:06How come? Such an important
tree and nothing scientific about it? -
3:06 - 3:08It was exactly what I needed
to start my project. -
3:08 - 3:13After the starting idea, I thought
about the best way to use the plant. -
3:13 - 3:18So I made tea, juice, balm, soap,
I even made recycled paper with it. -
3:18 - 3:21I was running out of ideas.
-
3:22 - 3:26The tea had still an acceptable taste,
but, in big quantities, -
3:26 - 3:28it has hallucinogenic potential.
-
3:28 - 3:29Don't try this at home!
-
3:29 - 3:31(Laughter)
-
3:31 - 3:36The juice had a horrible taste,
so no one would try it out. -
3:36 - 3:39But, ladies, they say
it's good for weight loss. -
3:39 - 3:43The balm, I tested it,
gave results for sure, -
3:43 - 3:49and I saw that there was a chance
of developing a wonderful project. -
3:49 - 3:52Since I didn't have a laboratory
where to develop my research, -
3:52 - 3:54I had to look for partnerships.
-
3:54 - 3:56I found partnerships
with some universities, -
3:56 - 3:58among them, UNIFESP;
-
3:58 - 4:02they helped me
to develop my project better. -
4:02 - 4:07I did the specie identification,
the pharmacological properties mapping, -
4:07 - 4:09I did a battery of tests.
-
4:09 - 4:12And, at last, I proved
embaúba was catheterizing. -
4:13 - 4:17I won many prizes,
I also published a scientific article. -
4:17 - 4:21Today, many students
of that school do research, -
4:21 - 4:23and my project is an example
for many of them. -
4:23 - 4:25I am really proud of this.
-
4:25 - 4:31With all that encouragement
to do research, -
4:31 - 4:35I lived the secondary school years
wishing to attend Pharmacy. -
4:35 - 4:38I, who came from
the worst school of my area, -
4:38 - 4:42passed all the entrance exams I did.
-
4:42 - 4:43Did I choose Pharmacy? No.
-
4:44 - 4:46I stopped, meditated, and decided
-
4:46 - 4:50Engineering was something more related
to what I wanted for my future. -
4:51 - 4:56Today I'm 18, I'm coursing my second year,
-
4:56 - 4:59and I want to graduate
in Energy Engineering. -
4:59 - 5:03Because I can't stand to know a country
with a territorial extension like this, -
5:03 - 5:06with such climatic diversities
-
5:06 - 5:09is still using thermoelectric energy,
in good weather periods. -
5:09 - 5:13And at the same time, it has so little
matrix energetics diversification. -
5:14 - 5:17Even now, I don't have the answer
for that initial question. -
5:17 - 5:22But, thanks to my education, I discovered
that my strongest will is growing up -
5:22 - 5:24and making life better
for the people around me. -
5:25 - 5:28In my life, there have been
two kinds of schools. -
5:28 - 5:31But this has never demotivated
nor stopped me. -
5:32 - 5:36So, today I want to serve as inspiration
for as many youth as possible, -
5:36 - 5:39just like other people inspired me
during my entire life. -
5:39 - 5:42I want youth to believe in their talent
-
5:42 - 5:44and in their hard work.
-
5:44 - 5:49I wish they looked for their dreams
and changed their lives and the world. -
5:49 - 5:52People should never ever say
that someone's dreams are rubbish. -
5:52 - 5:56It would be a pity
if everyone believed this. -
5:56 - 5:57You are as big as your dream.
-
5:57 - 6:00It doesn't matter where you came from,
where you were born. -
6:00 - 6:04If you have a dream and move mountains
to achieve what you want, -
6:05 - 6:07believe me, things will happen.
-
6:07 - 6:10Do you know Alice in Wonderland?
-
6:10 - 6:12Do you remember the cat?
-
6:12 - 6:15"Which way you ought to go
depends on where you want to get to." -
6:15 - 6:20So, the question is this:
what's your dream? -
6:20 - 6:23And what's the place
you want to have in the world? -
6:23 - 6:24Thank you very much.
-
6:24 - 6:25(Applause)
