The Promise of Justification Isn't For Good People - Tim Conway

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    And the promise is this:
  • 0:02 - 0:06
That if we cling to Christ in faith,
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    we'll be justified.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    There's the promise.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
You see, the promise is the blessing
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    of all the nations.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    The promise is this:
  • 0:15 - 0:18
That there is a way to heaven.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
There is a way to be justified
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    by faith in Jesus Christ.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    That's the blessing.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
    Justification by faith
    is the most glorious
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    promise that can be imagined.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    I mean, this is it.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    This is it. Why?
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    Because what God has done
  • 0:36 - 0:40
is He has found a way for us
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    to be righteous without law-keeping.
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    And that's huge!
  • 0:44 - 0:47
Because you see, if you keep the law,
  • 0:47 - 0:49
if you've kept it, you're just.
  • 0:49 - 0:53
You don't need any way to be justified.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
    You are just.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
But if you've once broken His law -
  • 0:59 - 1:01
you see what God has done is
  • 1:01 - 1:05
He's given a promise to those
    who need another way.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
    (Incomplete thought)
  • 1:09 - 1:12
See, the problem is, once you've broken it
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    you can't heal that breach.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    There's nothing you can do
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    once you're a law breaker
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    to change that reality,
  • 1:22 - 1:28
except by the promise. That's it.
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    See, there's no way.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    People who say, well,
    I'm a pretty good person.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    No, no, no.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    You can take that
    "pretty good" off the front.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
Because if by "pretty good," you mean
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    that you sin sometimes,
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    you're a law breaker.
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    And as a law breaker,
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    you're under a curse,
    and that curse says
  • 1:43 - 1:45
you need to keep everything written
  • 1:45 - 1:48
in the Book of the Law
or you're going to go to hell.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    You're cursed. You're under
    the wrath of God.
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    There is no hope.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    You have to keep everything.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    Everything. Every iota.
    Every jot and tittle.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    You cannot vary.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
You can't be at variance from God's law
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    in the least bit.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
Why? Because to sin is to fall short
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    of the glory of God.
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    It is a reproach.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
It is an attack on His glory.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    And what God has said,
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    "I give promise, Abraham,
  • 2:12 - 2:13
that a blessing is going to come."
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    Oh, if Abraham could have
  • 2:15 - 2:18
laid his teeth into the fullness of it.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    It wasn't totally revealed.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
It was in darkness at the time.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
It was not revealed in other generations
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    as it's now been revealed.
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    Which is what?
  • 2:27 - 2:32
We Gentiles - there's a way to heaven.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
There's a way to have our sins dealt with
  • 2:34 - 2:40
    that does not require
    me to keep God's law.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    And that is the promise.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
    Justification. What is that?
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    Justification is an act -
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    a gracious act of God,
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    where He counts you righteous.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    Not because you are righteous.
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    Not because you've done good.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
Not because you've kept the law.
  • 2:59 - 3:02
But He counts you as such
  • 3:02 - 3:06
based on the merits of Jesus Christ.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    By His obedience,
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    by His perfections,
  • 3:10 - 3:13
by His obedience all the way to the cross,
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    by His death,
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    by His righteousness.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    He fulfilled all righteousness.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    And it's by this,
  • 3:21 - 3:23
oh, do you hear those words?
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    David spoke them and
    they're repeated by Paul
  • 3:25 - 3:27
in the 4th chapter of Romans.
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    Blessed. Blessed is that man
  • 3:31 - 3:36
against whom God does not count his sin.
  • 3:36 - 3:40
If you're good, you have no need of this.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
Look, if you came in here today
  • 3:42 - 3:44
and aside from all of this,
  • 3:44 - 3:46
you could say, "I'm a pretty good person."
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    Then, you don't need this.
  • 3:47 - 3:48
    You see, Jesus said,
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    those who are well,
    they don't need a doctor.
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    This isn't for you.
  • 3:52 - 3:57
    God hasn't designed
    a way to justify people
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    who have kept the law;
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    who are good people.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
That's not what this is for.
  • 4:01 - 4:03
This is for people who need another way.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    This is for people who,
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    you know what?
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    In the eyes of good people;
  • 4:07 - 4:10
in the eyes of religious people,
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    they're hopeless.
  • 4:12 - 4:13
    There's no way.
  • 4:13 - 4:15
You see, this is for people
  • 4:15 - 4:17
like the thief on the cross
  • 4:17 - 4:19
who have done nothing but live a life
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    of wretchedness and debauchery
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    and sin and thievery,
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    and they've got nothing.
  • 4:25 - 4:27
And they don't have time left
  • 4:27 - 4:30
to even try to repair their bad record.
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    Which is basically what most
    of the false religions teach:
  • 4:33 - 4:37
do enough good and you can undo the bad.
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    But you see, no matter
    how much good you do
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    after you've broken
    the law, you're unjust.
  • 4:43 - 4:50
Justification is God, by His grace,
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    devising a way
  • 4:52 - 4:58
that bad people can be declared righteous.
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    That's the reality.
  • 5:00 - 5:03
    That's the promise.
  • 5:03 - 5:08
    What greater promise could
you be a partaker of than that one?
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    That's it.
Title:
The Promise of Justification Isn't For Good People - Tim Conway
Description:

There is a way to be made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ. This is called justification; the most glorious promise that can be imagined. But this is only good news to those who recognize their total need for this blessing. Are you a pretty good person? Or does God's law render you cursed under His wrath, standing naked and needy of Another to justify you?
