How Brenna Huckaby Conquers a Snowboard Course | NYT - Inside an Olympic Athlete's Mind
-
0:00 - 0:04When I'm at the start gate and
I'm preparing to visualize, -
0:04 - 0:06I'm usually looking
down the course. -
0:06 - 0:09Usually I've memorized
the course to almost a T. -
0:09 - 0:12Pull out of the gate, flat,
roller, roller, roller, -
0:12 - 0:14stay flat, don't speed
check - you've got this. -
0:14 - 0:17Pop, tabletop, pop
down, turn one - -
0:17 - 0:19Any time I feel my
heart rate starting -
0:19 - 0:22to go up, whether it's
good or bad, I reset. -
0:22 - 0:26I go to my happy place,
which is usually home. -
0:26 - 0:30I have my entire family, my
mom's cooking, sit with my dad, -
0:30 - 0:32and I can smell Cajun food -
-
0:32 - 0:35I'm from Louisiana.
-
0:35 - 0:38Roller, turn two, absorb hole -
-
0:38 - 0:40After having my daughter,
for whatever reason, -
0:40 - 0:43while I was competing,
I heard my mom's voice -
0:43 - 0:45saying, “Come on, baby."
-
0:45 - 0:47Because she used to say that
in all my gymnastics videos. -
0:47 - 0:49I could hear my mom being
like, “Come on, baby. -
0:49 - 0:51Come on, baby."
-
0:51 - 0:53Four, drawn out.
-
0:53 - 0:54Five, super tight.
-
0:54 - 0:55Waterfall.
-
0:55 - 0:57Six, speed check.
-
0:57 - 0:58Jump.
-
0:58 - 1:00Seven - tight.
-
1:00 - 1:04Eight, hold speed, roller,
roller, roller, jump, finish. -
1:04 - 1:07I'm always envisioning
the course and winning. -
1:07 - 1:11I hear “Brenna Huckaby,
U.S.A.," and you're like, wait. -
1:11 - 1:12That's not right.
-
1:12 - 1:15But you go up to the
first place anyway. -
1:15 - 1:18There's a pink background
behind me, there's a bear, -
1:18 - 1:23there's little flowers that
they made, and I see the seats. -
1:23 - 1:25And I see myself
standing in first. -
1:29 - 1:31The reason I love
snowboarding so much -
1:31 - 1:33is because I feel
like everyone else. -
1:33 - 1:36I cover my - well, not cover
my leg because I want to, -
1:36 - 1:38but it's cold, so
I put my pants down -
1:38 - 1:42and nobody knows that I'm
missing a leg, and I love that. -
1:42 - 1:44It just gives me that
sense of freedom. -
1:44 - 1:46Whenever I'm walking
down the street, -
1:46 - 1:48someone's always staring
or someone's always gotta -
1:48 - 1:49bring that up.
-
1:49 - 1:51Being on snow and being
in my snowboard pants, -
1:51 - 1:53like, I'm away from that.
-
1:53 - 1:56Just - I'm just Brenna,
and I love that.
