Coworking can change the world: Amarit Charoenphan at TEDxChiangMai 2013
-
0:13 - 0:14Good morning
-
0:14 - 0:16Just kidding, good evening!
-
0:16 - 0:17Ladies and gentlemen, Tedsters
-
0:17 - 0:19My name is Amarit Charoenphan
-
0:19 - 0:21the cofounder & CEO of HUBBA Co., Ltd
-
0:21 - 0:23with the first coworking space
-
0:23 - 0:25in Thailand for startups,
creatives and freelancers. -
0:25 - 0:27And today I’d like to share with you
-
0:27 - 0:29one very simple message
-
0:29 - 0:30I believe that
-
0:30 - 0:31coworking can change,
-
0:31 - 0:33can and will change the world.
-
0:33 - 0:35And I like you to be
part of that movement, -
0:35 - 0:39So, how did coworking begin in Thailand
-
0:39 - 0:41and what is a coworking space?
-
0:42 - 0:44So, for me the journey towards
-
0:44 - 0:46building the whole coworking movement
-
0:46 - 0:49is essentially trying…me trying to solve
-
0:49 - 0:52a personal, very painful situation,
-
0:52 - 0:55from a house that
was flooded in October 2011 -
0:55 - 0:58and I had to move out to Pattaya.
-
0:59 - 1:01So…like most people,
-
1:01 - 1:03me and my brother, we started working,
-
1:03 - 1:05of course, at a house.
-
1:05 - 1:06We rented this small house in Hialeah,
-
1:06 - 1:08that includes 13 dogs,
-
1:08 - 1:11all the stuff we brought over from Pattaya,
-
1:11 - 1:12a very nagging mom
-
1:12 - 1:17and just general mayhem
with no wifi and 3G, imagine that! -
1:17 - 1:20And we tried to start
a business at that house, -
1:20 - 1:23and ok, at first, of course,
it's sort of works -
1:23 - 1:26it's the quickest office
you’ll ever get to in your life. -
1:26 - 1:27You just get up and go,
-
1:27 - 1:29it's also the most cost-efficient
-
1:29 - 1:31if you're living with your parents.
-
1:31 - 1:33And also it's comfortable
-
1:33 - 1:35if you're working from your bed
or in your underwear. -
1:35 - 1:37Fortunately I do not have pictures of me
-
1:37 - 1:38working in my underwear!
-
1:38 - 1:41But, more importantly is that
-
1:41 - 1:42we soon found out that
-
1:42 - 1:44if you're working from your homes,
-
1:44 - 1:45you’ll get the feeling that
-
1:45 - 1:48it’s just not a place to start anything.
-
1:48 - 1:50Whether you become lonely, bored
-
1:50 - 1:53or generally demotivated
-
1:53 - 1:55and the place is really not suited
-
1:55 - 1:58for you to meet with investors,
-
1:58 - 2:01teams, your clients and your suppliers.
-
2:01 - 2:02Then once you throw in your pets
-
2:02 - 2:04or you have wives, kids,
-
2:04 - 2:07visiting relatives and 13 dogs,
-
2:07 - 2:09it just becomes too much.
-
2:09 - 2:11So like most people, we just said,
-
2:11 - 2:12ah…this isn’t going to work,
-
2:12 - 2:13so where do we go?
-
2:14 - 2:16So we went to look around
for the best coffee -
2:16 - 2:18and the best café in town.
-
2:18 - 2:20And we searched far and wide
and we love coffee -
2:20 - 2:22and we craved it after a while.
-
2:22 - 2:26Also we just love
the energy and buzz of seeing... -
2:26 - 2:27you know...people,
-
2:27 - 2:29especially good-looking people
-
2:29 - 2:31working at the café.
-
2:31 - 2:34And initially it sort of worked as well.
-
2:34 - 2:36But, you soon found out that cafés
-
2:36 - 2:38were never meant to be
-
2:38 - 2:40ah… office substitute.
-
2:40 - 2:42For a very good reason:
you're paying the rent -
2:42 - 2:44with 2 cups of coffee a day,
-
2:44 - 2:45if you don’t drink,
-
2:45 - 2:46the owner starts looking at you
-
2:46 - 2:47and getting pissed off
-
2:47 - 2:49Then, after a while,
-
2:49 - 2:51the power socket is hard to find,
-
2:51 - 2:53the chairs are uncomfortable,
-
2:53 - 2:54the light is dim,
-
2:54 - 2:58and then, all the tourists
from everywhere start coming, -
2:58 - 3:00and eventually, you realize that
-
3:00 - 3:02this is too much distraction.
-
3:02 - 3:04And, after a while,
-
3:04 - 3:05you just find out that,
-
3:05 - 3:07you know, this coffee shop
-
3:07 - 3:09has one very big drawback:
-
3:09 - 3:12one I just found out
in a very hard way! -
3:12 - 3:14It's that, I had diarrhea,
-
3:14 - 3:16I had to pack all my stuff in my bag,
-
3:17 - 3:19put everything together,
run to the toilet, -
3:19 - 3:20and then it’s locked!
-
3:20 - 3:21Somebody was inside!
-
3:21 - 3:23And then like...No, I know It
-
3:23 - 3:24I didn't do it on my pants
-
3:24 - 3:27There was the lady's room on the side.
-
3:27 - 3:30So what is there to do
for new entrepreneurs? -
3:30 - 3:32Essentially, there’s…
-
3:33 - 3:35it's the house and the café
-
3:35 - 3:36just didn’t really work,
-
3:36 - 3:38but, we couldn’t afford for an office
-
3:38 - 3:40or rent one of those service offices.
-
3:40 - 3:43So, there has to be a better way
-
3:43 - 3:44And there is!
-
3:44 - 3:47Which is this mega trend of coworking,
-
3:47 - 3:49which is working out for
a hundred thousand people -
3:49 - 3:52across the world in
over 3,000 spaces worldwide -
3:52 - 3:54and we read all these articles and said,
-
3:54 - 3:55this is so awesome
-
3:55 - 3:57but none of this exists in Thailand
-
3:57 - 3:59So if there was one in Thailand,
-
3:59 - 4:02then I would pay money
to go and use it. -
4:02 - 4:04And, it’s working out
for so many people -
4:04 - 4:06that it's actually,
fundamentally changing -
4:06 - 4:09the way we work and for the better.
-
4:10 - 4:12So what is coworking space?
-
4:12 - 4:12A lot of you would say,
-
4:12 - 4:16Yes, it’s basically a whole bunch
of independent professionals -
4:16 - 4:19coming together to share
a facility that has -
4:19 - 4:22all the stuff you find
in a really nice office. -
4:22 - 4:24But that’s the simplistic definition
-
4:24 - 4:28that only describes the tangible aspects
of a coworking space -
4:28 - 4:31whereas I’d like to see coworking
-
4:31 - 4:34as a concept that is a verb
and not a noun. -
4:34 - 4:35It's the way of working,
-
4:35 - 4:39not actually a static place,
-
4:39 - 4:41but also where 3 COs
-
4:41 - 4:43in the word “coworking” converge:
-
4:43 - 4:45Cooperation, Collaboration, Community.
-
4:45 - 4:48That’s where our generation of millennials
-
4:48 - 4:50and generation Y and people after us
-
4:50 - 4:51want from work space
-
4:51 - 4:55a service, a relationship... a community
-
4:56 - 4:58So, back to my story.
-
4:58 - 5:00I came back from Pattaya and
-
5:00 - 5:01I thought this was the big…
-
5:01 - 5:03very big pain that I want to solve
-
5:03 - 5:04and I really wanted to work at
-
5:04 - 5:06a coworking space
-
5:06 - 5:07There’s none in Thailand,
-
5:07 - 5:08I've never been to one,
-
5:08 - 5:09never did any market research,
-
5:09 - 5:10but we knew
-
5:10 - 5:11there were more people
-
5:11 - 5:14going through the same pain as me,
-
5:14 - 5:15and not just about diarrhea,
-
5:15 - 5:16but just about working;
-
5:16 - 5:18so we realized that O.K.
-
5:18 - 5:19We’re just gonna build it
-
5:19 - 5:21and we found this really beautiful house
-
5:21 - 5:23Actually it’s very ugly right now,
-
5:23 - 5:24but in 6 months,
-
5:24 - 5:26we turned it into this!
-
5:26 - 5:29We basically put everything
-
5:29 - 5:31that you find in a really nice office
-
5:31 - 5:33and more, and shared it
with everyone else. -
5:33 - 5:34You know,
-
5:34 - 5:36beautifully decorated work space,
-
5:36 - 5:39fast Wi-Fi, a lot of books,
-
5:39 - 5:43shared water, coffee, a printing service,
-
5:43 - 5:45meeting rooms, everything,
-
5:45 - 5:47even a trampoline in this garden.
-
5:47 - 5:49However, all of that is very affordable
-
5:49 - 5:52for the budget-conscious entrepreneur
-
5:52 - 5:54and freelancer and at the same time,
-
5:54 - 5:56so well-managed that
-
5:56 - 5:58our members just focus on their work
-
5:58 - 6:02and not actually
on the workspace or managing. -
6:02 - 6:04So we thought that people love us
-
6:04 - 6:06for building this,
-
6:06 - 6:07that they’ll kiss my hands and say,
-
6:07 - 6:08"Oh, shut up and take my money.
-
6:08 - 6:10Oh, thank you bringing
coworking to Thailand." -
6:11 - 6:12But, of course,
-
6:12 - 6:13that’s a fairytale
-
6:13 - 6:15and then, the reality is that,
-
6:15 - 6:16in the first months,
-
6:16 - 6:18we had 1 member.
-
6:18 - 6:20And we were like, what is going on?
-
6:20 - 6:23So we were immediately
so close to failure. -
6:23 - 6:25I spent millions on this space,
-
6:25 - 6:28and built it, nobody…you know
-
6:28 - 6:29everybody came
-
6:29 - 6:31the investors, media and everyone...
-
6:31 - 6:34They liked it, but nobody really signed up
-
6:34 - 6:35Nobody really signed up,
-
6:35 - 6:37so I realized something was amiss
-
6:37 - 6:39and asking enough questions,
I realized that -
6:39 - 6:43people just found coworking
as a culture so new -
6:43 - 6:46that they didn’t know
what was the value -
6:46 - 6:49that they were getting out of the space,
-
6:49 - 6:51and that they didn't know
-
6:51 - 6:53whether it was more valuable
-
6:53 - 6:54above and beyond, you know,
-
6:54 - 6:56just a nice office,
-
6:56 - 6:57but why should they be there
-
6:57 - 7:00instead of a house or cafe,
-
7:00 - 7:02realizing both on to one word:
-
7:02 - 7:04community.
-
7:04 - 7:07Community is the lifeblood,
-
7:07 - 7:09the…what makes
coworking space so addictive -
7:09 - 7:11because community is what
-
7:11 - 7:13gets my members
and everyone that I know -
7:13 - 7:15up from bed traveled far and wide
-
7:15 - 7:16to come to this space
-
7:16 - 7:18and pay me to work
-
7:18 - 7:20because they find that
-
7:20 - 7:21the experience of working with
-
7:21 - 7:23awesome like-minded individuals
-
7:23 - 7:25side by side, every day,
-
7:25 - 7:27sharing coffee and conversation,
-
7:27 - 7:28becoming friends,
-
7:28 - 7:31starting to help, share, learn
-
7:31 - 7:32and collaborate with one another
-
7:32 - 7:35is so invaluable, so hard to find
-
7:35 - 7:37to the point that, you know,
-
7:37 - 7:40entrepreneurship is so hard for them,
-
7:40 - 7:41freelancing is so hard
-
7:41 - 7:43for them for the first time
-
7:43 - 7:44that they believe that
-
7:44 - 7:46if they can work with somebody else
-
7:46 - 7:48the journey is much more fun and valuable.
-
7:48 - 7:50So, finding that out,
-
7:50 - 7:52we focus on communities,
-
7:52 - 7:53making the space fun and friendly
-
7:53 - 7:55but also adding value where we can
-
7:55 - 7:57with events, activities, and workshops,
-
7:57 - 7:58like this event,
-
7:58 - 8:00start on the weekend, 54 hours straight,
-
8:00 - 8:03straight complete strangers come together
-
8:03 - 8:04to do a start-up business
-
8:04 - 8:06and pitch to investors.
-
8:06 - 8:06They're so well received
-
8:06 - 8:08that 200 people showed up, you know
-
8:08 - 8:09in our the latest event
-
8:09 - 8:11and our latest conference
-
8:11 - 8:13for the technology star vehicle system
-
8:13 - 8:15attracted 400 people
-
8:15 - 8:17and we filled our entire auditorium.
-
8:19 - 8:20So, who are all these people
-
8:20 - 8:22that work out of these spaces?
-
8:22 - 8:24And, where do they come from?
-
8:24 - 8:25and the events as well
-
8:25 - 8:26So, essentially
-
8:26 - 8:30we’ve met so many
different types of people, -
8:30 - 8:32the sheer diversity is amazing.
-
8:32 - 8:35It's not just start-ups and
creatives and freelancers -
8:35 - 8:37but I’ve met politicians and lawyers
-
8:37 - 8:40and yoga masters and painters
-
8:40 - 8:43and corporate warriors and nonprofit people,
-
8:43 - 8:45social entrepreneurs, actors...
-
8:46 - 8:50Actually, I had one really
nice member recently -
8:50 - 8:54who used to be homeless
in New York, in the States, -
8:55 - 8:57learned how to become a DJ,
-
8:57 - 8:59and one...one day she decided
-
8:59 - 9:01she's just gonna fly to Thailand
-
9:01 - 9:03and she started writing about
-
9:03 - 9:05displaced people
and becoming really famous -
9:05 - 9:07about refugee issues.
-
9:07 - 9:09So basically, anybody can work
-
9:09 - 9:10out of a coworking space;
-
9:10 - 9:12anybody in this room,
-
9:12 - 9:13all of you can work out there
-
9:13 - 9:16because essentially,
coworking is a community. -
9:16 - 9:17A community of people that
-
9:17 - 9:19share ideas, interests and passion,
-
9:19 - 9:21and once we come together,
-
9:21 - 9:25we actually create this space
where we work together -
9:25 - 9:29and because we all bring a bit of
our individual soul and character, -
9:29 - 9:33coworking spaces are places
with a lot of soul. -
9:34 - 9:37So now there're 3,000 spaces
worldwide and growing. -
9:37 - 9:39But, there's a handful in town
-
9:39 - 9:41and, there's one in Chiang Mai Pun Space.
-
9:41 - 9:44But I’d like to see this be everywhere
-
9:44 - 9:46as common as coffee shops
-
9:46 - 9:49and so common that our new entrepreneurs,
-
9:49 - 9:50creatives, freelancers, innovators
-
9:50 - 9:52and changemakers
-
9:52 - 9:54work out of these spaces
and are supported -
9:54 - 9:57and are nurtured and
become more successful, -
9:57 - 9:59allowing us to bring in,
-
9:59 - 10:02you know, more interested people
-
10:02 - 10:05who see now that this...
their lifestyle is possible, -
10:05 - 10:06this career is possible,
-
10:06 - 10:07working out of these spaces
-
10:07 - 10:09and are well-supported and
-
10:09 - 10:12and once they join the community,
the community grows. -
10:12 - 10:18And I really love to end this
with one really simple message: -
10:18 - 10:22coworking spaces are the communities
-
10:22 - 10:24that bring the cooperative
-
10:24 - 10:28and collaborative cultures back to
-
10:28 - 10:31our cities, our communities, our society,
-
10:32 - 10:35and if we can help to
-
10:35 - 10:37foster more coworking spaces
-
10:37 - 10:38to be everywhere,
-
10:38 - 10:40we will have many more spaces
-
10:40 - 10:43with a soul across the cities
-
10:43 - 10:45and that will lead to a rise
-
10:45 - 10:48in the quality of life in our cities.
-
10:48 - 10:50So I'd like to urge all of you
-
10:50 - 10:52to join our movement,
-
10:52 - 10:55to work out of a coworking space
from time to time, -
10:55 - 10:59to support the ideas, people, projects
-
10:59 - 11:01that grow out of this space,
-
11:01 - 11:04and also to… maybe even decide to
-
11:04 - 11:07open, operate or invest in one.
-
11:07 - 11:09Because if we cowork together,
-
11:09 - 11:12we can create a better Thailand
-
11:12 - 11:13and a better world.
-
11:13 - 11:14Thank you very much
-
11:14 - 11:18(Applause)

- a few awkward wording and timing mistakes fixed

Dear Elaine Mitchell:
Thank you for the comment on my draft subtitle, on which I am still working to review it. However, I am wondering did you watch the video, because I am sure the speaker also made some grammatical errors like at 00:00:19,047 --> 00:00:21,378
I am the cofounder & CEO of HUBBA Co., Ltd--> I listen to this part again and he "did not say "I am...."
Should we alter the speaker's words to make it grammatically right? I am not sure about this!
I will go though the rest parts to make sure that I do not get you wrong. However, I should thank you for the advice and the help you generously offered.
Helene Batt
Hi! I edited the parts where said "Padilla". The speaker of this talk confirmed that he was talking about a place in Thailand called "Pattaya”. Best, Helene
